A chance for Mercedes to equal Lotus’ podium tally, a chance for Hamilton to equal Prost as the most successful driver at home and an opportunity for Ferrari to extend their Fastest Lap record. Here are the records which are up for grabs over the 2019 British Grand Prix weekend!
The numbers and milestones
This will be the 1006th Formula 1 Grand Prix. It’ll be the 74th British Grand Prix and the 70th British Grand Prix to be held as a round of the F1 championship. It will also be the 53rd F1 race to be held at Silverstone.
The seventh lap of the 2019 British Grand Prix will be the 4000th racing lap of the Silverstone circuit since F1 first visited in 1950.
The records to beat
If Lewis Hamilton wins this weekend, he’ll set a new outright record for the most British Grand Prix victories. He’s currently tied on five wins in Britain with Jim Clark and Alain Prost. He’d also set an outright record for the most wins at Silverstone, a record which he currently shares with Prost. If he wins, Hamilton will become the first driver to have scored more than 200 points at the British Grand Prix.
Furthermore, Hamilton could equal Prost as the most successful driver at their home event. Prost won the French Grand Prix six times in his career, Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix five times so far.
In 2018, Lewis Hamilton equalled Ayrton Senna’s record of six poles at his home Grand Prix. Hamilton will take the outright record should he take a seventh British Grand Prix pole this season.
If a Mercedes-powered car takes pole, Mercedes will equal Renault as the most successful engine manufacturer in qualifying at Silverstone.
If Sebastian Vettel wins, he’ll become the ninth driver to have taken back-to-back victories at the Silverstone circuit.
If Kimi Raikkonen finishes on the podium, he’ll equal Lewis Hamilton’s current record of eight top three finishes at the British Grand Prix.
Williams and Ferrari are currently tied as the teams to have taken the most pole positions at Silverstone. Each have taken pole eleven times; so either could set a new outright record this weekend.
If Ferrari set the fastest lap at the British Grand Prix, they’ll extend their existing record for most fastest laps at an event to 21. They’d also equal their record for the most fastest laps for a team at any one circuit; they have currently taken 19 at Monza and 18 at Silverstone.
If Kimi Raikkonen finishes this weekend’s Grand Prix, he’ll equal Rubens Barrichello and Fernando Alonso’s shared record of most races finished at Silverstone. They each finished the British Grand Prix fifteen times during their careers. Raikkonen has done so fourteen times so far in his career.
So far in their history, Mercedes have taken 195 podium finishes. If both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas finish on the podium this weekend, Mercedes will equal Lotus as the team with the fourth-most podium finishes in F1 history.
If Kimi Raikkonen is classified in the British Grand Prix, this will be the 242nd race which he’s been in the classified result of. That would see him overtake Michael Schumacher’s total of 241 classified finishes during his career and put him third in the all-time list, behind Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.
If Sebastian Vettel finishes on the podium, it will mark his 50th podium appearance as a Ferrari driver.
