2020 Bahrain GP: A Statistic For Every Driver

Grosjean has a miraculous escape, Hamilton equals his personal best of wins in a season and Perez makes unwanted history. Here’s a statistic from each driver’s 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix weekend!

?? Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton equalled the record for most Bahrain Grand Prix poles and wins over the 2020 race weekend. This was Hamilton’s tenth pole position of 2020. Including Hamilton in 2020, there have been only sixteen occasions where a driver has taken ten or more poles in a single season – this was the fifth time that Hamilton has achieved the feat. Hamilton ended the curse of Free Practice 2 at the Bahrain Grand Prix. In the fifteen previous races at the track, the driver who was fastest in FP2 had never previously gone on to take pole position. On Sunday, Hamilton recorded his eleventh win of 2020. Including Hamilton in 2020, there have been only eight occasions where a driver has recorded eleven or more wins in a year. This was the fourth time that Hamilton has achieved the feat. For only the second time in his career, Hamilton took a fifth consecutive victory. The only other time that he has won five successive races was in 2014, when he won all five races between the Italian Grand Prix and the United States Grand Prix. Hamilton is only the second driver, after Michael Schumacher, to record five consecutive wins on multiple occasions. The 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix is the first dead rubber Formula 1 race which Hamilton has won which was not held at Yas Marina Circuit. His win is the tenth victory for the polesitter in the last eleven dead rubber events.

?? Valtteri Bottas

Qualifying in second place for the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, the driver of car number 77 reached Q3 for a 77th consecutive race. Valtteri Bottas is the first driver to reach Q3 at 77 successive races. Bottas finished the race in eighth place, marking the first time he has failed to finish on the podium at two consecutive races since the 2019 German and Hungarian Grands Prix. Bottas’ eighth place ends a six year streak of both Mercedes drivers finishing on the podium at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

?? Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel failed to qualify in the top five at the Bahrain Grand Prix for the first time since 2014. In addition to 2014 and 2020, 2008 is the only other season in which Vettel has not qualified in the top three at the Bahrain International Circuit. Vettel finished the race in thirteenth place. It’s the first time that he’s finished the event without scoring. The only other times that Vettel has failed to score at the circuit are when he retired in 2008 and when he failed to start in 2016.

?? Charles Leclerc

Charles Leclerc scored Ferrari’s only point in the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, finishing in tenth place. This is the first time Ferrari have picked up fewer than three points in Bahrain since 2005, when neither driver scored.

?? Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen qualified in third place for the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, which is the first time that he has qualified inside the top four at the Bahrain Grand Prix. It was Red Bull’s first top three result in qualifying at the Bahrain Grand Prix since 2014 and in the race, Verstappen recorded the team’s best result since at the track Sebastian Vettel’s win in 2013. Verstappen’s second place was the 41st podium finish of his career, equalling Felipe Massa for 22nd in the all-time list of most podiums. With the Fastest Lap, Verstappen also became the 36th driver to have recorded ten Fastest Laps in F1.

?? Alex Albon

After equalling his career-best qualifying result on Saturday, Alex Albon equalled his career-best race result on Sunday with third place. Albon is only the third Red Bull driver to finish on the podium in Bahrain and becomes the 145th driver to record multiple podium finishes in Formula 1.

?? Carlos Sainz

A rear brake failure meant that Carlos Sainz was unable to set a lap time in Q2 at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Fifteenth was Sainz’s worst qualifying result of the season so far, and marked the first time that he has failed to reach Q3 at two consecutive races since the 2019 Austrian and British Grands Prix. Sainz finished the race in fifth, recording successive top five finishes for the first time since the 2019 German and Hungarian Grands Prix. In both of the last two races, the Spaniard has started fifteenth and finished fifth. This was the first time that Sainz has scored at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

?? Lando Norris

With fourth place, Lando Norris recorded the third top four result of his career. On every occasion that Norris has finished in the top four, his team-mate has also finished inside the top five.

?? Daniel Ricciardo

On his seventh Bahrain Grand Prix appearance, Daniel Ricciardo maintained his record of never being out-qualified by a team-mate at the event. Ricciardo scored for a ninth consecutive race, which is his longest streak of points-scoring events since the end of the 2016 season.

?? Esteban Ocon

After recording his best-ever Bahrain qualifying result with seventh, Ocon finished ninth in the race and maintained his 100% points scoring record at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

?? Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez reached Q3 in Bahrain for the first time since 2014. His fifth place qualification equalled both his and his team’s best-ever qualifying result at the Bahrain International Circuit. Perez was set to finish on the podium for a second race in a row, which would have been the first consecutive podium finishes of his career, but an engine failure in the closing stages left him out of the race. This was the first race Perez started this year in which he failed to score. It’s also Perez’s first retirement at the Bahrain Grand Prix and the first time in sixteen races at the Bahrain International Circuit that the driver starting fifth on the grid has failed to score.

?? Lance Stroll

Lance Stroll recorded his fourth retirement from the last six races in which he has competed. Stroll maintains his record of never scoring at the Bahrain Grand Prix, and this was his first retirement at the event since his maiden season.

?? Daniil Kvyat

Daniil Kvyat reached Q3 in Bahrain for the first time in his career and qualified tenth. He lost one position in the race, finishing outside of the points in eleventh place.

?? Pierre Gasly

Pierre Gasly qualified in eighth place for the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, out-qualifying his team-mate for a sixth consecutive race. He finished the race in sixth place, marking only the third time that his team have scored at the Bahrain International Circuit.

?? Kimi Raikkonen

This was the thirteenth time that Kimi Raikkonen has reached the chequered flag at the Bahrain Grand Prix. That equals the record for most finishes at the event, previously shared between Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso. Raikkonen recorded his first Q1 exit at the event since 2006. The Finn finished fifteenth for a second race in a row, making this the first time that Raikkonen has finished in the same position at two races in a row since finishing third at the 2018 Mexican and Brazilian Grands Prix.

?? Antonio Giovinazzi

Along with team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, Antonio Giovinazzi was out in Q1 at the Bahrain Grand Prix, making this only the seventh occasion where a team has recorded a double Q1 exit having had both cars in Q3 at the previous race. Giovinazzi finished the race where he started, in sixteenth place. The only other time the Italian has finished where he has started this year was at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where he also finished sixteenth.

?? Romain Grosjean

Romain Grosjean was lucky to survive a huge crash on the opening lap of the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix. Grosjean’s crash was the first time a driver has been eliminated on the opening lap in Bahrain since 2008. The Frenchman will miss the next race as a result, making the Sakhir Grand Prix the first race which Grosjean will not enter since the 2012 Italian Grand Prix, and the first which he will not start since the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix.

?? Kevin Magnussen

Kevin Magnussen failed to reach Q3 at the Bahrain Grand Prix for the first time since 2017 and joined Adrian Sutil, Marcus Ericsson, Pastor Maldonado and Takuma Sato as the fifth driver who has recorded three Q1 exits at the Bahrain International Circuit.

?? George Russell

George Russell reached Q2 for the ninth time in his career. His fourteenth place in qualifying marked Williams’ 190th Q2 elimination since the system was introduced in 2006. In the race, Russell finished twelfth, which was Williams’ best result at the Bahrain Grand Prix since Felipe Massa finished sixth in 2017.

?? Nicholas Latifi

For the third time in the last four races, Nicholas Latifi qualified in last place. It made 2020 the third season in a row that a Williams driver has qualified in 20th position at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
