Gasly records France’s first win in 24 years, Vettel records Ferrari’s worst home qualifying result since 1966 and Hamilton equals the record for most points finishes. Here’s a statistic from each driver’s 2020 Italian Grand Prix weekend!
?? Lewis Hamilton
On Saturday, Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the 2020 Italian Grand Prix with the fastest lap in Formula 1 history. Hamilton has now taken 68 poles during his time at Mercedes – that’s as many pole positions as Michael Schumacher secured in the entirety of his career. On Sunday, Hamilton finished seventh and recorded the worst result for an Italian Grand Prix polesitter since he crashed out in the closing stages of the 2009 race. Despite this, Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher’s record for the most points-scoring appearances and joined Schumacher as only the second driver to have set the Fastest Lap of a Grand Prix on fifty occasions.
?? Valtteri Bottas
For the first time, Valtteri Bottas started the Italian Grand Prix from the front row of the grid. He finished fifth in the race, meaning that this is the fifth time in the last six races that Bottas has finished the Grand Prix in a worse position than where he qualified. In fact, the Styrian Grand Prix is the only race where he has finished in a better position than where he started so far in 2020.
?? Sebastian Vettel
Sebastian Vettel recorded Ferrari’s 25th Q1 exit, and the team’s first Q1 exit at Monza in qualifying for the 2020 Italian Grand Prix. Vettel’s seventeenth place was the first time that a Ferrari driver has qualified outside of the top fifteen at Monza since Giancarlo Baghetti in 1966. Vettel retired from the race with brake failure, recording his first DNF from the Italian Grand Prix and making this the second year in a row that the German has failed to score at Monza.
?? Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc crashed out of the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, bringing out the red flags for the first time at Monza since 1995 – a race in which both Ferrari drivers similarly retired. It marked the first time since his maiden season that Leclerc has failed to score at the circuit.
?? Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen’s streak of podium finishes came to an end as he retired from the 2020 Italian Grand Prix. It was his first retirement at Monza and the first time he has failed to score at the track since his debut season in 2015.
?? Alex Albon
Alex Albon maintained his 100% Q3 appearance record at Monza. The only other drivers with a 100% Q3 appearance rate here are Lance Stroll and Sebastien Bourdais. On Sunday, Albon finished in a lowly fifteenth. The last time that a Red Bull driver finished outside of the points at the Italian Grand Prix without retiring was in 2008, when David Coulthard finished sixteenth.
?? Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz equalled his career-best qualifying result at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix with third place. It marked the first time that a McLaren driver has qualified in the top three at the Italian Grand Prix since Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button locked out the front row in 2012. The Spaniard went one better on Sunday and finished in a career-best second place. He’s the first McLaren driver to finish on the podium at the Italian Grand Prix since Lewis Hamilton won in 2012 and becomes only the second Spanish driver, after Fernando Alonso, to have taken multiple podium finishes in Formula 1. Sainz also led a lap of a Grand Prix for the first time in his career. He’s the 174th driver to have led a lap in the sport and the first McLaren driver to do so since Jenson Button led a single lap of the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix.
?? Lando Norris
Lando Norris finished in fourth place, making the 2020 Italian Grand Prix the first race since the 2014 Australian Grand Prix in which both McLaren drivers have finished in the top four. It’s also the first time that both McLaren drivers have scored at Monza since 2014.
?? Daniel Ricciardo
Finishing in sixth place, Daniel Ricciardo made the 2020 Italian Grand Prix the 300th Formula 1 race in which an Australian driver has scored. Australia is the seventh nation to reach the milestone.
?? Esteban Ocon
Esteban Ocon finished in eighth place at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix. It’s the first time a French driver has finished eighth at the Italian Grand Prix since Romain Grosjean did so in 2013 when also driving for the Enstone-based team.
?? Sergio Perez
Sergio Perez qualified in fourth place for the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, recording his team’s best Italian Grand Prix qualifying result since 2012, when Paul di Resta also qualified in fourth place. For a seventh consecutive year, Perez finished in the points at Monza. Only Lewis Hamilton has a longer active streak of points finishes at the Italian Grand Prix. Hamilton has scored in all of the last ten Monza races.
?? Lance Stroll
Lance Stroll finished third, recording the first podium finish for the Silverstone-based team at the Italian Grand Prix since Heinz-Harald Frentzen won for Jordan in 1999. Both of Stroll’s podium finishes have come in races which have been red-flagged. The 2020 Italian Grand Prix is only the second race at Monza to feature a Canadian driver in the top three. The only other time it has happened was in 1979, when Gilles Villeneuve finished as runner-up.
?? Daniil Kvyat
Daniil Kvyat finished in ninth place, which makes 2020 the first time since 2011 that the Red Bull junior team has scored with both cars at the Italian Grand Prix. It’s also the first time that both of the team’s cars have finished in the points since the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix, a race in which Pierre Gasly also finished on the podium.
?? Pierre Gasly
Pierre Gasly became a Grand Prix winner at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix. The last time a French driver won was when Olivier Panis took victory for Ligier at the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix, when Gasly was just three months old. Gasly’s win is the first for a French driver at Monza since Alain Prost won the 1989 Italian Grand Prix, as well as the first victory for Honda power at the circuit since Ayrton Senna won for McLaren in 1992. He is the first French driver to win with an Italian team since Jean Alesi won for Ferrari at the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix.
?? Kimi Raikkonen
On the weekend where Kimi Raikkonen equalled Michael Schumacher as the driver to have entered the most races with a Ferrari-badged engine, the Finn overtook Rubens Barrichello as the driver to have completed the most racing laps at Monza in Formula 1 history. Barrichello toured the circuit 886 times during his career, while Raikkonen has now completed 889 laps. Raikkonen also equalled Barrichello as the driver to have finished a race on the most occasions at Monza.
?? Antonio Giovinazzi
At the 2019 Italian Grand Prix, Antonio Giovinazzi recorded the first points for an Italian driver on home soil since 2006. There was no such luck in 2020, as Giovinazzi served a stop/go penalty which dropped him to the back of the order. He finished sixteenth – the worst result for an Italian at Monza since Jarno Trulli finished nineteenth for Lotus in 2011.
?? Romain Grosjean
Failing to score for an eighth consecutive race, Romain Grosjean equalled his worst ever start to a season at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix. His worst start to a season came in 2018 – though the Frenchman did record two more retirements in the opening races in 2018 than he has done in 2020.
?? Kevin Magnussen
Kevin Magnussen retired from the Italian Grand Prix for a second consecutive year. Magnussen is the first driver to have recorded four retirements in 2020.
?? George Russell
George Russell recorded his worst qualifying result of the season with nineteenth place at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix. He finished the race in fourteenth – the first time he has finished fourteenth since last year’s Italian Grand Prix.
?? Nicholas Latifi
Qualifying last on the grid in twentieth, Nicholas Latifi recorded the worst qualifying result for a Williams driver at the Italian Grand Prix since Jean-Louis Schlesser qualified 22nd on his one-off appearance for the team at Monza in 1988. In more positive news for the Canadian, he was faster than team-mate Russell in Sector 2 by 0.232 seconds – the first time he has been faster than the Brit in any sector during qualifying.
