As Esteban Ocon became F1’s 111th winner, Alonso leads a race for the first time in seven years and Vettel is the second driver to be disqualified in Budapest. Here’s a statistic from each driver’s 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix weekend!
LEWIS HAMILTON
For the first time since 2017, Lewis Hamilton failed to win the Hungarian Grand Prix. Nevertheless, Hamilton became the first driver to record ten podiums at the Hungaroring, as well as the third driver to have reached the chequered flag on 250 occasions.
VALTTERI BOTTAS
For the first time in his career, Valtteri Bottas recorded a first lap retirement. This was Bottas’ third retirement of the 2021 season and his first non-finish in Hungary since his debut season. It was also the first retirement for Mercedes at the Hungarian Grand Prix since Nico Rosberg failed to finish in 2013.
MAX VERSTAPPEN
Max Verstappen finished the Hungarian Grand Prix in ninth place. That’s the worst result for the driver starting third at the Hungaroring since Felipe Massa retired from the 2008 race.
SERGIO PEREZ
Caught up in the first corner crash, Sergio Perez recorded his first retirement as a Red Bull driver. It was the first time he has failed to finish since the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
DANIEL RICCIARDO
Daniel Ricciardo’s eleventh place finish in the Hungarian Grand Prix means that he has failed to score on three of his six appearances at the Hungaroring. The Australian was eliminated in Q2 – making this the fourth season in succession that he has failed to qualify in the top ten in Budapest.
LANDO NORRIS
Lando Norris’ retirement at the Hungarian Grand Prix meant that his 15-race points-scoring streak – the longest ever for a McLaren driver – came to an end. This was Norris’, and McLaren’s, first retirement since the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix.
SEBASTIAN VETTEL
Sebastian Vettel finished as runner-up at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, but was disqualified for being unable to supply a fuel sample. If Vettel’s second place had stoof, it would have been the Silverstone-based team’s best ever Hungarian Grand Prix result. Instead, it was the first time a driver has been disqualified since the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix, when both Renault drivers were disqualified. Vettel is the second driver to be disqualified in Hungary. Robert Kubica, in 2006, is the only other driver to have been disqualified at the Hungaroring.
LANCE STROLL
For the first time in his career, Lance Stroll failed to finish the Hungarian Grand Prix. On Saturday, he failed to reach Q3 for the fourth time in his five appearances at the Hungaroring.
FERNANDO ALONSO
After Vettel’s disqualification, Fernando Alonso finished the Hungarian Grand Prix in fourth place. This was Alonso’s first top five result in Hungary since 2015. The Spaniard has scored on every appearance at the Hungaroring since 2010. Alonso led two laps of the race. It was the first time he has led a race since the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix.
ESTEBAN OCON
Esteban Ocon became the 111th different driver to win a World Championship Formula 1 race. Prior to Sunday, Ocon had scored only once previously at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with a ninth place finish in 2017. Ocon is the first driver to win from eighth on the grid since Fernando Alonso at the 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix. The Frenchman is the eighteenth driver to win at the Hungarian Grand Prix and the fifth different driver to take his maiden win here. Ocon is the first French driver to win with a French team using a French engine since Alain Prost, who won for Renault at the 1983 Austrian Grand Prix.
CHARLES LECLERC
Charles Leclerc’s retirement from the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix marked the first time in 2021 that the driver starting seventh on the grid has failed to finish the race.
CARLOS SAINZ
Vettel’s disqualification promoted Carlos Sainz into the podium positions at the Hungarian Grand Prix. It was the Spaniard’s fourth podium – meaning he has celebrated only half of his podium finishes by actually standing on the rostrum. Sainz is the first driver to record a podium finish having started from fifteenth on the grid at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
PIERRE GASLY
Pierre Gasly has completed the Hungarian Grand Prix on three of his four appearances – each time doing so with a sixth place result. He finished sixth on the road once again in 2021, but is promoted to fifth following Vettel’s disqualification. Gasly set the fastest lap of the race – the first time he has done so since the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix.
YUKI TSUNODA
Yuki Tsunoda finished the Hungarian Grand Prix in seventh place, equalling the best result of his Formula 1 career to date. That became sixth following Vettel’s disqualification. Sixth is the best result for a Japanese driver since Kamui Kobayashi’s sixth place at the 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix.
KIMI RAIKKONEN
After equalling his best qualifying result of the year with thirteenth place – this being the second race in a row at which he has qualified thirteenth – Kimi Raikkonen finished on the road in eleventh place, but was promoted into the points following Vettel’s disqualification. With both Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen scoring, this was the first race in which two drivers over the age of 40 have scored in over 50 years. Jack Brabham and Graham Hill both scored points over the age of 40 at the 1970 British Grand Prix.
ANTONIO GIOVINAZZI
With thirteenth place, Antonio Giovinazzi recorded his best Hungarian Grand Prix result to date. His previous best was seventeenth place, in 2020.
MICK SCHUMACHER
Finishing in twelfth place, Mick Schumacher recorded his best Formula 1 result to date. This was despite failing to set a lap time after a Free Practice 3 crash for the second time in his career.
NIKITA MAZEPIN
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Nikita Mazepin recorded his second non-finish – his first since the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. Every time that a Haas driver has retired in Hungary, the other driver has finished on the road in thirteenth place. It also happened in 2017 and 2019.
GEORGE RUSSELL
For the first time, George Russell scored points in a Williams car. Russell scored the first points for a driver starting seventeenth on the grid since Sergio Perez at the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix.
NICHOLAS LATIFI
Nicholas Latifi recorded the points finish of his Formula 1 career with seventh place. His seventh place is the best result for a Williams driver since Felipe Massa finished seventh at the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix. Latifi is the first driver to score points having started eighteenth at the Hungarian Grand Prix – but he equals the best result from this grid slot. Martin Donnelly finished seventh for Lotus at the 1990 Hungarian Grand Prix, before a seventh place finish offered points.
