Sainz is the first driver to pick up a maiden win at Silverstone since 1995, Hamilton sets multiple records at the track and Schumacher is the first driver to score his first points at Silverstone in 25 years. Here’s a statistic from every driver’s 2022 British Grand Prix weekend!
🇳🇱 Max Verstappen
After qualifying in second place and recording his second successive front row start at Silverstone, Max Verstappen finished the 2022 British Grand Prix in seventh place. It made this the first time since the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix that Verstappen has finished off the podium in a race in which he has reached the chequered flag.
🇲🇽 Sergio Perez
Finishing in second place, Sergio Perez finished in the top five at Silverstone for the first time. His previous best British Grand Prix result was sixth place, recorded in 2016. Perez also recorded his best qualifying result at Silverstone, with fourth place. That beat his previous best result of seventh at the circuit, which he recorded in both 2014 and 2017.
🇬🇧 Lewis Hamilton
At the 2022 British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton overtook Jack Brabham as the driver to have had the tenth longest Formula 1 career. For the first time since 2014, Hamilton failed to qualify on the front row at the British Grand Prix. He went on to finish in third place, becoming the first driver to take 13 podium finishes at a single circuit. This was the tenth consecutive Silverstone race in which Hamilton has finished on the podium. The 2022 British Grand Prix is the first time since 2013 that Hamilton has not finished in the top two positions at Silverstone.
Failing to win for an eleventh successive race, this is the first time that Hamilton has gone 11 races without a win in his 15-year Formula 1 career. Leading eight laps of the British Grand Prix, Hamilton became the first driver to have led a lap in 16 consecutive Formula 1 seasons.
Setting the Fastest Lap for the 60th time in his career, Hamilton became the first driver to set 60 Fastest Laps with a single engine manufacturer. He equalled Nigel Mansell’s record of six Fastest Laps at the Silverstone circuit. This was Hamilton’s 16th points-scoring appearance at the Silverstone circuit, overtaking Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have scored on the most occasions at the venue.
🇬🇧 George Russell
George Russell qualified in eighth place for the British Grand Prix, which is one position better than where he qualified here with Williams in 2021. This was the first time Russell failed to out-qualify his team-mate at Silverstone. Russell became the first Mercedes driver to qualify outside the top six at Silverstone since Nico Rosberg qualified 13th in 2012.
Russell was eliminated on the first lap, this being the first time he was out on the opening lap during his F1 career. This was Russell’s first DNF of the 2022 season. Russell became the first Mercedes driver to retire from the British Grand Prix since Nico Rosberg in 2014.
🇲🇨 Charles Leclerc
With third place, Charles Leclerc equalled his best qualifying result at Silverstone. He also qualified third here in 2019. This was the first time Leclerc has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the circuit.
🇪🇸 Carlos Sainz
The 2022 British Grand Prix marked Carlos Sainz’s 150th race start. And for the second race weekend in a row, a driver won on their 150th start. Sainz became the 112th winner in World Championship history, becoming the first driver to take his maiden win at Silverstone since Johnny Herbert in 1995. He is the 40th driver to have won a Grand Prix with Ferrari.
Carlos Sainz slots into second on the lists of both most qualifying appearances before a maiden pole position and most starts before a win. Only Sergio Perez made more appearances before taking his first pole position or win. Sainz became the first driver to convert his maiden pole position into a win since Pastor Maldonado at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix, over ten years ago.
🇦🇺 Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo failed to reach Q3 at Silverstone for the first time since 2017. Having suffered a mechanical problem that year, this was the first time the Australian has failed to reach Q3 at Silverstone on pace alone since 2012.
🇬🇧 Lando Norris
Lando Norris remains yet to be out-qualified by a team-mate at his home Grand Prix. He qualified sixth for the 2022 British Grand Prix. Norris finished where he started, making this the fourth consecutive race at Silverstone in which he has scored.
🇪🇸 Fernando Alonso
For the second year in a row, Fernando Alonso qualified in seventh place for the British Grand Prix. Alonso finished in fifth place, recording his best result of the season to date. This was the third top five result of his comeback stint and his best result at Silverstone since finishing third in 2013.
During the race, Alonso overtook Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have raced the furthest distance in Formula 1 history. Alonso becomes only the third driver to have scored 2,000 points in his Formula 1 career. He also becomes only the third driver to have raced 1,000 Grand Prix laps at the Silverstone circuit.
With both Sainz and Alonso picking up points, this was the 300th Grand Prix in which a Spanish driver has scored points.
🇫🇷 Esteban Ocon
Esteban Ocon failed to reach Q3 at Silverstone for only the second time in his carer. He qualified 15th, which is his worst qualifying result at the track. Ocon was out of the race following contact on the opening lap. This was the first that he has not scored at the circuit and his first DNF of the 2022 season.
🇫🇷 Pierre Gasly
Retiring on Lap 27, Pierre Gasly was one of five drivers to lose his 100% finishing record at the Silverstone circuit. George Russell, Esteban Ocon, Alex Albon and Valtteri Bottas also retired from a Silverstone race for the first time.
🇯🇵 Yuki Tsunoda
With Yuki Tsunoda only 14th and Pierre Gasly retiring, this was the first time since 2018 that the Red Bull junior team failed to score points at the British Grand Prix.
🇩🇪 Sebastian Vettel
Finishing in ninth place, Sebastian Vettel became the first driver to score points having started 18th on the grid at Silverstone since Jaime Alguersuari in 2011. Celebrating his 35th birthday on the day of the race, Vettel became the first driver to score points on his birthday since Max Verstappen at the 2018 Russian Grand Prix. He became the first to score points on his 35th birthday since Derek Warwick at the 1989 Belgian Grand Prix.
On Saturday, Vettel recorded his worst-ever Silverstone qualifying result. It was only the second time, after the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020, that Vettel has not reached Q3 at the track.
🇨🇦 Lance Stroll
Lance Stroll recorded his fifth consecutive Q1 exit, qualifying on the back row for the fourth time this year. This was Stroll’s 55th Q1 exit, equalling Adrian Sutil and Heikki Kovalainen for third on the list of most Q1 exits since the qualifying system was introduced in 2006. Coming home in 11th place, Lance Stroll failed to score at Silverstone for the first time since the 2019 British Grand Prix.
🇹🇭 Alex Albon
Alex Albon made this the seventh consecutive race at Silverstone in which a Williams driver has been eliminated in Q1. Albon became the first Williams driver to retire from the British Grand Prix since Felipe Massa in 2014. Those are the only two retirements for the team at Silverstone in the past 17 races at the circuit.
🇨🇦 Nicholas Latifi
Nicholas Latifi recorded the first Q3 appearance of his Formula 1 career, qualifying in tenth place. It ended a streak of 16 consecutive Q1 exits for the Canadian driver. Latifi failed to convert his first Q3 appearance into points at the British Grand Prix. He finished 12th, which is his best result of the season to date. His 12th place finish saw him overtake Nico Hulkenberg for 20th in the championship standings.
🇫🇮 Valtteri Bottas
Having started every race since the 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas became the 13th driver to start 150 consecutive races. Max Verstappen achieved the same feat at the previous race. Bottas recorded his fourth Q2 exit of the 2022 season. This was the first time that Bottas failed to reach Q3 at Silverstone since the 2014 British Grand Prix.
🇨🇳 Zhou Guanyu
Zhou Guanyu recorded the best qualifying result of his career to date with ninth place. This was Zhou’s second consecutive Q3 appearance. He is the first driver to reach Q3 at Silverstone with the former Sauber team since Charles Leclerc in 2018.
Zhou was lucky to escape without injury in a Turn 1 crash at the British Grand Prix. This was his fourth retirement in the last six races – the first not to be caused by a mechanical issue.
🇩🇪 Mick Schumacher
Finishing in eighth place, Mick Schumacher picked up the first points of his Formula 1 career. Schumacher slots into sixth on the list of most starts before a driver’s first points. This was his 31st Grand Prix appearance. Schumacher is the first driver to pick up the first points of his Formula 1 career at Silverstone since Alex Wurz in the 1997 British Grand Prix.
🇩🇰 Kevin Magnussen
Kevin Magnussen equalled his worst qualifying result of the year to date with 17th place. It also equalled his worst qualifying result at Silverstone, having previously qualified 17th for the 2017 British Grand Prix and the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.
With Magnussen finishing tenth in the race – and Schumacher eighth – Haas scored points with both cars for the first time since the 2019 German Grand Prix. This was the first time Magnussen has scored, or even finished a race, at Silverstone since the 2018 British Grand Prix.
