Sainz becomes Formula 1’s 112th winner, Hamilton sets a new record for most podiums at a single circuit and Schumacher scores the first points of his career. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2022 British Grand Prix.
SAINZ TAKES MAIDEN WIN
Carlos Sainz became the 112th winner in World Championship history at the 2022 British Grand Prix. Sainz is the first driver to take his maiden win at Silverstone since Johnny Herbert in 1995.
Taking Ferrari’s 241st win, Sainz becomes the 40th different driver to have won a Grand Prix with the Scuderia. This was the first time Ferrari have won the British Grand Prix since Sebastian Vettel’s victory in 2018. It was Ferrari’s 15th win in total at Silverstone.
Carlos Sainz ended a streak of six victories for Red Bull, taking Ferrari’s first win since the 2022 Australian Grand Prix.
This was the second race in a row which a driver won on their 150th start. Max Verstappen took victory on his 150th appearance at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Sainz ended the second longest wait for a maiden victory in Formula 1. Sergio Perez is the only driver to have made more starts before his first win. He made 190 starts before his maiden victory at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.
Sainz became the first driver to convert his maiden pole position into a win since Pastor Maldonado at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix, over ten years ago.
This was the first time that Sainz has finished inside the top five at the Silverstone circuit.
ON THE PODIUM
Finishing in second place, Sergio Perez finished in the top five at Silverstone for the first time. His previous best British Grand Prix result was sixth place, recorded in 2016.
The 2022 British Grand Prix was the 140th race in which Perez has scored. That sees him equal Rubens Barrichello as the driver to have scored in the eighth-most races.
Lewis Hamilton finished in third place, becoming the first driver to take 13 podium finishes at a single circuit. This was the tenth consecutive Silverstone race in which Hamilton has finished on the podium. The 2022 British Grand Prix is the first time since 2013 that Hamilton has not finished in the top two positions at Silverstone.
This was Hamilton’s 33rd third place finish in Formula 1. He overtakes Sebastian Vettel as the driver to have finished third in the second-most Grands Prix. Only Kimi Raikkonen, on 45, sits ahead of him in the list.
Failing to win for an eleventh successive race, this is the first time that Hamilton has gone 11 races without a win in his 15-year Formula 1 career.
This was the first time since the 2014 German and Hungarian Grands Prix that Hamilton has finished in third place at consecutive races.
Hamilton became the first driver to finish on the podium at Silverstone having started from fifth on the grid since Nico Rosberg in 2010.
Leading eight laps of the British Grand Prix, Hamilton became the first driver to have led a lap in 16 consecutive Formula 1 seasons.
Setting the Fastest Lap for the 60th time in his career, Hamilton became the first driver to set 60 Fastest Laps with a single engine manufacturer. He equalled Nigel Mansell’s record of six Fastest Laps at the Silverstone circuit.
This was Hamilton’s 16th points-scoring appearance at the Silverstone circuit, overtaking Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have scored on the most occasions at the venue.
IN THE POINTS
Fernando Alonso finished in fifth place, recording his best result of the season to date. This was the third top five result of his comeback stint. This was Alonso’s best result at Silverstone since finishing third in 2013.
With both Sainz and Alonso picking up points, this was the 300th Grand Prix in which a Spanish driver has scored points.
During the race, Alonso overtook Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have raced the furthest distance in Formula 1 history. He’s set to overtake Raikkonen’s total of laps raced at the French Grand Prix.
Alonso becomes only the third driver to have scored 2,000 points in his Formula 1 career. He also becomes only the third driver to have raced 1,000 Grand Prix laps at the Silverstone circuit.
Max Verstappen finished the 2022 British Grand Prix in seventh place, making this the first time since the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix that he has finished off the podium in a race in which he has reached the chequered flag.
Finishing in eighth place, Mick Schumacher picked up the first points of his Formula 1 career. Schumacher slots into sixth on the list of most starts before a driver’s first points. This was his 31st Grand Prix appearance.
Schumacher is the first driver to pick up the first points of his Formula 1 career at Silverstone since Alex Wurz in the 1997 British Grand Prix.
Finishing in ninth place, Sebastian Vettel became the first driver to score points having started 18th on the grid at Silverstone since Jaime Alguersuari in 2011.
Celebrating his 35th birthday on the day of the race, Vettel became the first driver to score points on his birthday since Max Verstappen at the 2018 Russian Grand Prix. He became the first to score points on his 35th birthday since Derek Warwick at the 1989 Belgian Grand Prix.
With Kevin Magnussen finishing tenth, Haas scored points with both cars for the first time since the 2019 German Grand Prix. This was the first time Magnussen has scored – or even finished a race – at Silverstone since the 2018 British Grand Prix.
This was only the second time, after 2018, that Haas have scored points in the British Grand Prix. It was their first double points scoring appearance at Silverstone.
THE OTHER FINISHERS
Coming home in 11th place, Lance Stroll failed to score at Silverstone for the first time since the 2019 British Grand Prix.
Nicholas Latifi failed to convert his first Q3 appearance into points at the British Grand Prix. He finished 12th, which is his best result of the season to date. His 12th place finish sees him overtake Nico Hulkenberg for 20th in the championship standings.
With Yuki Tsunoda only 14th and Pierre Gasly retiring, this was the first time since 2018 that the Red Bull junior team failed to score points at the British Grand Prix.
THE RETIREES
Zhou Guanyu was lucky to escape without injury in a Turn 1 crash at the British Grand Prix. This was his fourth retirement in the last six races – the first not to be caused by a mechanical issue.
Both George Russell and Esteban Ocon recorded their first non-finishes of the season. It means that Lewis Hamilton is now the only driver to complete every race in 2022.
This was also the first time that both Russell and Ocon have retired from a race at Silverstone. Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon and Valtteri Bottas also lost their 100% finishing record at the track.
For Ocon, this was the first that he has not scored at the circuit.
Russell became the first Mercedes driver to retire from the British Grand Prix since Nico Rosberg in 2014.
With both Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas retiring from the race, Alfa Romeo became the fifth team to record a double DNF in 2022. The team last failed to finish the race with either car at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This was the team’s first double DNF at Silverstone since 2018.
Alex Albon became the first Williams driver to retire from the British Grand Prix since Felipe Massa in 2014. Those are the only two retirements for the team at Silverstone in the past 17 races at the circuit.
The red flag on the first lap made this the second consecutive season in which the British Grand Prix has been red-flagged on the opening lap.
