Verstappen is the youngest driver to reach 70 podium finishes, Hamilton breaks a 67-year-old record and Alonso becomes the 8th oldest driver to score a points in the past 52 years. Here’s a statistic from each driver’s 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix weekend!
🇳🇱 Max Verstappen
After struggling with engine issues in Q3 on Saturday, Max Verstappen took victory from tenth on the grid at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix. With his 28th career victory, Verstappen moved ahead of Jackie Stewart to eighth in the all-time win list. He became the eighth, and youngest, driver to have recorded 70 podium finishes.
Verstappen is the 19th different driver to have won the Hungarian Grand Prix since the event joined the calendar in 1986.
Verstappen became the 31st driver to have won a round of the World Championship from tenth or further back on the grid. This is the first race to be won from tenth since the 2021 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, in which Lewis Hamilton was victorious. It was the 12th race to be won from tenth on the grid.
🇲🇽 Sergio Perez
Sergio Perez failed to reach Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, qualifying in 11th place. This was the second time in 2022 that Perez has failed to make it into the final part of qualifying. Perez became the first driver to have been eliminated in Q2 on six occasions at the Hungarian Grand Prix. No other driver has had more than four Q2 exits at the Hungaroring.
Perez finished the race in fifth place, making this the first time he has finished in a position outside of the top four positions at any of the last 15 races which he has completed. Despite that, fifth is Perez’s best-ever result at the Hungarian Grand Prix. His previous best result here was seventh, recorded in 2020.
🇬🇧 Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton led four laps of the Hungarian Grand Prix, taking his total number of laps led at the Hungaroring to 487. That saw him break Bill Vukovich’s 67 year old record of most laps led at a single circuit. Vukovich led 485 laps at Indianapolis Motor Speedway when the Indianapolis 500 was a round of the World Championship between 1950 and 1960.
Hamilton became the first driver to have finished as runner-up on 50 occasions in his Formula 1 career.
Hamilton’s second place made him the fourth driver to have a gap of 300 races between their first and last podium finishes. Fernando Alonso (355), Michael Schumacher (347) and Kimi Raikkonen (314) are the only other drivers with more than 300 races between their first and last podium results.
🇬🇧 George Russell
George Russell became the 105th polesitter in World Championship history as he secured pole for the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix. Russell became the 16th different driver to take pole at the Hungaroring. He is the third driver to take his maiden pole at the Hungarian Grand Prix, after Thierry Boutsen in 1990 and Max Verstappen in 2019.
Russell’s pole saw Britain equal its own record for most consecutive seasons in which a nation has taken pole (19). British drivers last took pole in 19 consecutive seasons between 1955 and 1973!
With third place in the race, Russell recorded consecutive podium finishes for the first time in his career. Polesitter Russell lost two positions from where he started, making this the first race in which he has lost places since the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix.
After leading 24 laps of the race, Russell rose to third in the list of most laps led without a win. He has led 87 laps in total, behind Chris Amon (183) and Jean Behra (107) on the list.
🇲🇨 Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc qualified in third place, which is his best Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying result to date. Leclerc finished in sixth place, recording his seventh non-podium result in the last eight races. Lewis Hamilton has now had more podium results in 2022 than Leclerc.
🇪🇸 Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz qualified on the front row at the Hungarian Grand Prix for the first time. His previous best qualifying result here was fifth, recorded in 2018. Finishing in fourth place, Sainz made this the seventh consecutive Hungarian Grand Prix in which he has scored points.
🇦🇺 Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo reached Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix for the first time since 2017. His Q3 appearance ended a streak of three races at which he failed to reach Q3. That ends his longest Q3-less streak in almost ten years.
🇬🇧 Lando Norris
Lando Norris made his 73rd start with McLaren this weekend. It saw him equal John Watson as the driver to have made the tenth most starts with the McLaren team. Norris recorded his best Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying result to date with fourth place. This is McLaren’s best qualifying result at the Hungarian Grand Prix since Lewis Hamilton took pole in 2012. Norris finished in seventh place for a third consecutive race.
🇪🇸 Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso made his 19th appearance at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2022. That saw him equal Rubens Barrichello and Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have made the most starts at the event.
With sixth place on Saturday, Alonso recorded his best Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying result since qualifying fifth with Ferrari in 2014.
Finishing in eighth place two days after his 41st birthday, Fernando Alonso becomes only the eighth driver since 1970 to score points at the age of 41 or older. He is only the third driver to have done so this millennium, after Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen.
Alonso equalled Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have reached the chequered flag on the most occasions at the Hungarian Grand Prix. This was the 16th time that the Spaniard has finished a race here. Alonso is now just five laps away from equalling Raikkonen’s record of most laps raced at the Hungaroring. Along with Lewis Hamilton, Alonso extended the record for most points-scoring races in Hungary. This was the 15th time that both drivers have scored a point at the Hungaroring. This was Alonso’s 11th consecutive appearance at the Hungarian Grand Prix in which he has picked up points.
Alonso scored points for an eighth consecutive race, making this the first time he has scored at eight races in a row since the eight races between the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix and the 2018 Spanish Grand Prix. It is the ninth time in his career that he has scored at eight or more consecutive races.
🇫🇷 Esteban Ocon
Esteban Ocon equalled his best qualifying result of the season to date and recorded his best-ever Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying result with sixth place. With Fernando Alonso eighth and Ocon ninth in the race, both Alpine drivers scored at the Hungarian Grand Prix for a second year in a row.
🇫🇷 Pierre Gasly
Pierre Gasly qualified in 19th, recording his first back row qualification in a conventional qualifying session since the 2018 Australian Grand Prix. This was the first time that Gasly has failed to reach Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Gasly went on to gain eight places from his pit lane start to 12th. This is the first time Gasly has gained a position from where he started at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
🇯🇵 Yuki Tsunoda
Both Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly were out in Q1, recording the Red Bull junior team’s first double Q1 exit at the Hungarian Grand Prix since 2006. It is the team’s third double Q1 exit of the 2022 season. Failing to score, Tsunoda moved out of a small group of drivers to have scored on every outing in Hungary.
🇩🇪 Sebastian Vettel
In the first race weekend since announcing his retirement, Sebastian Vettel failed to reach Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix or the first time since 2008. This was Vettel’s second Q1 elimination at the Hungaroring, his first since 2007. Vettel picked up a point with a tenth place finish. On his final Hungarian Grand Prix appearance, he became the seventh driver to have raced 1,000 laps at the Hungaroring.
🇨🇦 Lance Stroll
Lance Stroll progressed past Q1 for the first time since the Miami Grand Prix, ending a streak of seven consecutive Q1 exits.
🇹🇭 Alex Albon
Alex Albon and Yuki Tsunoda both finished outside of the points at the Hungarian Grand Prix, meaning both lost their 100% points-scoring rate at the Hungaroring circuit. Antonio Pizzonia and Johnny Dumfries, who each made only a single appearance at the track, are now the only other drivers in that club.
🇨🇦 Nicholas Latifi
Nicholas Latifi was fastest in Free Practice 3. He became the first driver to be fastest in Free Practice 3 and go on to qualify 20th or lower since Lewis Hamilton at the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix. Latifi qualified last for a second consecutive weekend. This was the fourth time he has qualified last in the 2022 season.
🇫🇮 Valtteri Bottas
Valtteri Bottas made it into Q3 for the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix, ending a streak of six consecutive Q2 eliminations. Qualifying eighth, this was the first time since 2017 that Bottas has not qualified on the front row at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Bottas recorded the former Sauber team’s best qualifying result in Hungary since Robert Kubica qualified fourth in 2008.
Bottas was the only driver who failed to reach the chequered flag at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix. This was his second retirement in the last four races and his third retirement of the 2022 season. This was Bottas’ second consecutive retirement in Hungary.
🇨🇳 Zhou Guanyu
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu made it out of Q1 for first time since Silverstone. He finished 13th – his best result since scoring points in Canada
🇩🇪 Mick Schumacher
Mick Schumacher finished 14th in the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix, which is two positions worse than where he finished at the Hungaroring last year.
🇩🇰 Kevin Magnussen
With 16th place, Kevin Magnussen recorded his worst Hungarian Grand Prix result to date. It was the first time he has finished in a worse position than where he started at the Hungaroring.
