2022 Italian Grand Prix: Post Race F1 Statistics

Verstappen takes a fifth consecutive victory, Ferrari reach 70 podiums at Monza and De Vries scores points on debut. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2022 Italian Grand Prix!

VERSTAPPEN WINS AT MONZA

Max Verstappen became the ninth Formula 1 driver to win five consecutive races with his victory at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix. This was the 31st victory of Verstappen’s career, equalling Nigel Mansell for seventh in the all-time list of most F1 wins.

Verstappen recorded Red Bull’s first victory – and first podium finish – at Monza since the 2013 Italian Grand Prix. Red Bull become the seventh team to have taken three wins at the Monza circuit, with the Netherlands becoming the 17th country to have recorded a win at the track.

This was the ninth race in a row at which Verstappen has led at least one lap. He becomes only the tenth driver to have led nine consecutive races.

In total, this was the 22nd win to be taken from seventh on the starting grid. It was the first race to be won from seventh on the grid since Kimi Raikkonen’s victory at the 2013 Australian Grand Prix. Verstappen is the third driver to win from seventh at Monza, after Denny Hulme in 1968 and Ronnie Peterson in 1974.

Seventh is the seventh different grid slot from which Verstappen has won in 2022.

Monza becomes the 30th different circuit at which Verstappen has finished on the podium. Lewis Hamilton (35) and Kimi Raikkonen (30) are the only other drivers to have finished in the top three at 30 different tracks. Verstappen also becomes the fifth driver to have won at 20 different circuits during his Formula 1 career, after Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel.

Verstappen is the 40th different driver to have won at Monza in its World Championship history. Verstappen and Red Bull are the fifth different driver and team to win the Italian Grand Prix in the last five years.

Only one driver has won three Formula 1 races on three consecutive weekends – and he has now done it twice. Verstappen won all three races in a triple header for the second time, having last done so at the 2021 French, Styrian and Austrian Grands Prix.

ON THE PODIUM

Charles Leclerc and George Russell joined Max Verstappen on the Italian Grand Prix podium. While Leclerc became the 53rd driver to record multiple podium finishes at Monza, Russell and Verstappen became the 96th and 97th drivers to finish in the top three at the track. 13 drivers on the 2022 grid have finished on the podium at some point in their F1 career.

Leclerc recorded consecutive podium finishes for the first time since the first three races of the season.

Finishing in second, Leclerc made this the first time that the Italian Grand Prix polesitter has failed to convert pole to a win in three consecutive seasons since the seven Monza races between 1991 and 1997.

Leclerc becomes the 52nd driver to record 20 podium finishes in Formula 1. That sees him equal the career totals of Giuseppe Farina and John Watson.

IN THE POINTS

Finishing fourth, Carlos Sainz became the first driver to finish in the top four having started from 18th on the grid since Max Verstappen finished on the podium at the 2018 United States Grand Prix.

With the Ferrari drivers scoring 30 points between them, the Scuderia became the first team to have scored 600 points at Monza. They become the first team to have scored over 600 points at any single circuit.

With Lewis Hamilton, George Russell and Lando Norris all scoring points at the Italian Grand Prix, it was be the 88th consecutive race at which a British driver has scored. The 2018 Austrian Grand Prix was the last race in which no British drivers picked up a point. It equals the third longest consecutive scoring streak for a country in Formula 1.

This was the first time that Hamilton started a race from the back row of the grid since the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix. Hamilton gained 14 positions over the course of the race – the most he has gained since the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix, in which he moved up 16 positions from his starting spot.

Hamilton made this the third time in the last four Monza races that the driver starting 19th has picked up points.

Finishing in fifth place, Lewis Hamilton became the first driver to have scored 200 points at the Monza circuit. This was the third year in succession that Hamilton has failed to finish on the Italian Grand Prix podium.

With sixth place, Sergio Perez made this the ninth consecutive season in which he has picked up points at the Italian Grand Prix.

Perez recorded the best result for a driver starting 13th at the Italian Grand Prix since Alexander Wurz finished fifth in 2000.

Scoring six points with seventh place, Lando Norris moves ahead of Romain Grosjean in the list of most points without a victory. Norris has now scored 394 points in his career. Only Nico Hulkenberg has scored more points without ever taking a win.

Norris finished in seventh place for the fifth time in the last six races. He maintained his 100% points-scoring record at Monza and was joined in that group by Zhou Guanyu and Nyck de Vries.

Finishing ninth on his Formula 1 debut, Nyck de Vries becomes the third driver to score the first points of his career in 2022. He became the 78th driver to score points on his maiden World Championship appearance.

With both Verstappen and de Vries in the top ten, the 2022 Italian Grand Prix was the first Formula 1 race in which multiple Dutch drivers have scored points. It was also the first F1 race at which multiple Dutch drivers have crossed the finish line since the 2006 Brazilian Grand Prix.

With tenth place, Zhou Guanyu picked up points for the third time in his career. It was the first time he or the Alfa Romeo team has scored since the Canadian Grand Prix.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

Esteban Ocon failed to pick up a point for the first time since the British Grand Prix. This was only the second time Ocon has raced at Monza in F1 and failed to score. The only other time he has done so was with Manor in 2016.

With Ocon outside the points and Fernando Alonso retiring, this was the first time that Alpine have failed to score since the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. This was the first time since 2017 that neither of the Enstone team’s drivers scored at the Italian Grand Prix since 2017.

He didn’t score points, but Valtteri Bottas did at least finish the Italian Grand Prix following a streak of three consecutive retirements. This was the first time since 2013 that Bottas has failed to finish in the top six at Monza.

With 15th place, Nicholas Latifi recorded his best result since finishing 12th at the British Grand Prix.

Haas are still yet to pick up any points at the Italian Grand Prix, but with Mick Schumacher finishing 12th and Kevin Magnussen 16th, this was the first time both Haas cars have been classified in the final result at Monza since 2017.

THE RETIREES

Sebastian Vettel was the first driver to retire from the 2022 Italian Grand Prix. He recorded his first non-finish since the Miami Grand Prix. This was his third retirement of the year and his third at the Monza circuit.

Lance Stroll failed to finish for only the second time this season. This was the first time Stroll has failed to finish in the top twelve at the Italian Grand Prix.

Aston Martin became the sixth different team to record a double retirement in 2022. This was the team’s first double DNF since the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix and the first double DNF for Aston Martin since their World Championship debut at the 1959 Dutch Grand Prix.

This was the first time that neither of the Silverstone-based team’s drivers have crossed the finish line at the Italian Grand Prix since 2013 and the first time neither driver was classified at Monza since 2000.

Fernando Alonso failed to finish for the first time since the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. This was Alonso’s fifth retirement from his last seven Italian Grand Prix appearances. Alonso’s retirement ended a ten-race points-scoring streak.

Daniel Ricciardo was the final driver to retire from the Italian Grand Prix. This marked his first DNF since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

This was the third year in a row that the driver who won the previous year’s Italian Grand Prix retired from the event one year after their win.

As a result of Ricciardo’s stoppage, the 2022 Italian Grand Prix became the tenth Formula 1 race to finish under Safety Car conditions.
