Verstappen moves into the top ten of all-time F1 podiums, Ricciardo is out-qualified for the ninth race in a row and Zhou records the first DNF of his career. Here’s a statistic from every driver’s 2022 Miami Grand Prix weekend!
🇳🇱 Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen took victory in the 2022 Miami Grand Prix, taking the 23rd victory of his Formula 1 career. He equalled Nelson Piquet and Nico Rosberg for 12th in the all-time list of most F1 wins. Verstappen became the 17th driver to record wins at multiple World Championship events in the United States, as well as the 20th driver to record four podiums in the country. Verstappen recorded the 63rd podium finish of his career, moving ahead of David Coulthard and into the top ten of most podiums in Formula 1. Verstappen’s podium was also his 63rd with Red Bull. That sees him equal Alain Prost’s number of podiums with McLaren; fourth in the all-time list of most podiums with a single team.
🇲🇽 Sergio Perez
Sergio Perez finished fourth in the Miami Grand Prix, scoring for the fourth time in 2022. This was the fourth time he has finished fourth in the last nine races.
🇬🇧 Lewis Hamilton
For the first time at any United States race he’s competed in, Lewis Hamilton failed to qualify in the top five on the grid and failed to finish in the top four. Hamilton qualified sixth and finished where he started.
🇬🇧 George Russell
George Russell failed to reach Q3 for the second race in a row but made up seven positions in the race to finish fifth. He remains the only driver to finish in the top five at every race in the 2022 season so far. Russell last gained as many as seven places in a race at the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix.
🇲🇨 Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc secured pole position for the inaugural Miami Grand Prix, taking the 12th pole position of his Formula 1 career. He equalled Gerhard Berger and David Coulthard for 33rd in the all-time list of most F1 poles. Leclerc took Ferrari’s 14th pole position in the United States – the team’s first in the country since Michael Schumacher took pole at Indianapolis for the 2006 United States Grand Prix. He became the 36th different driver to take pole position for a World Championship Grand Prix in the United States.
🇪🇸 Carlos Sainz
With Carlos Sainz qualifying in second place, Ferrari locked-out the front row of the grid for the first time since the 2019 Mexican Grand Prix. This was the second time that Sainz has qualified on the front row. He last did so at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix. Sainz returned to the podium for the first time since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, recording the ninth podium result of his career.
🇦🇺 Daniel Ricciardo
With his 215th race start, Daniel Ricciardo equalled Mark Webber as the most experienced Australian driver in F1 history. In qualifying, Ricciardo was out-qualified by team-mate Lando Norris for the ninth race in a row. This is his longest streak of being out-qualified by his team-mate since the middle of the 2018 season, when Max Verstappen out-qualified him at 11 races in a row.
🇬🇧 Lando Norris
Lando Norris was eliminated from the Miami Grand Prix in a collision with Pierre Gasly. Norris recorded his first retirement since he was taken out on the first lap at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc therefore became the driver with the longest active finishing streak, having also last retired in Hungary last year.
🇪🇸 Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso failed to qualify in the top ten for the first time in 2022. It made the Miami Grand Prix the first race since the 2021 Mexico City Grand Prix that neither Alpine driver has reached Q3. Alonso went on to finish ninth on the road but, after picking up two 5-second time penalties, he finished only 11th. Alonso became the first driver to fail to score from 11th on the grid since the 2021 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
🇫🇷 Esteban Ocon
Esteban Ocon was unable to take part in qualifying. He was therefore eliminated in Q1, recording successive Q1 eliminations for the first time since the 2021 Styrian and Austrian Grands Prix. It was the first time Ocon qualified on the back row of the grid at two consecutive races since the 2016 Japanese and United States Grands Prix. After starting 20th on the grid, Ocon picked up four points with an 8th place result. He became the second driver to score from 20th on the grid so far this year, with Alex Albon also having scored from 20th in Australia.
🇫🇷 Pierre Gasly
With seventh place, Pierre Gasly recorded AlphaTauri’s best qualifying result of the year so far. Gasly failed to finish the race, recording his second retirement of the 2022 season.
🇯🇵 Yuki Tsunoda
Yuki Tsunoda reached Q3 for the first time in 2022 but failed to score in the race. He finished 12th in the race; a position in which he finished twice last year, at the Emilia Romagna and Austrian Grands Prix.
🇩🇪 Sebastian Vettel
Sebastian Vettel failed to finish the Miami Grand Prix following a collision with Mick Schumacher. It was Vettel’s second retirement in the last three races.
🇨🇦 Lance Stroll
Lance Stroll qualified in tenth place, reaching Q3 for the first time since the 2021 Turkish Grand Prix. Stroll started from the pit lane due to a pre-race fuel issue. He went on to finish the Miami Grand Prix in tenth place, scoring a point for the second race in a row. It’s the first time he has scored at successive races since the 2021 French and Styrian Grands Prix.
🇹🇭 Alex Albon
Alex Albon scored points for the second time this year, finishing in ninth place. His two points took his career total to 200 points. Albon is one of only seven drivers to have scored 200 points without winning a Grand Prix.
🇨🇦 Nicholas Latifi
Nicholas Latifi qualified on the back row for the fourth time in the last five races. He went on to record his best finish of the season to date with 14th place. He and Mick Schumacher are the only full-time drivers yet to score in 2022.
🇫🇮 Valtteri Bottas
Valtteri Bottas qualified in fifth place, recording his best qualifying result of the season to date. With seventh place in the Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas maintains his record of scoring points in every race which he has finished so far with Alfa Romeo.
🇨🇳 Zhou Guanyu
Zhou Guanyu was the first driver to retire from the Miami Grand Prix. He recorded the first retirement of his Formula 1 career. This was also the second DNF for Alfa Romeo in the 2022 season.
🇩🇪 Mick Schumacher
Mick Schumacher looked set to score the first points of his F1 career, completing 21 laps of the Miami Grand Prix inside the top ten. A late race collision with Sebastian Vettel saw Schumacher finish only 15th.
🇩🇰 Kevin Magnussen
Kevin Magnussen pulled into the pits before reaching the finish line. As a result, he recorded his first non-finish since the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. The Miami Grand Prix is only the second race of the year at which he has not scored.
