Perez is the first Mexican to win in Monaco, Verstappen equals Vettel’s Red Bull podium tally and Leclerc finishes his home race for the first time. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix!
PEREZ WINS IN MONACO
Sergio Perez won the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix becoming the 36th different driver to win the Monaco Grand Prix in its World Championship history. Perez took his first victory since the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Taking his third win in total, Perez became the most successful Mexican driver in F1, overtaking Pedro Rodriguez’s tally of wins. This was the first time a Mexican driver has won the Monaco Grand Prix. It made Mexico the 17th different nation to have a driver win in the principality.
Perez recorded Red Bull’s sixth Monaco Grand Prix win. They are only the sixth team to have won in Monaco six times. Having also won last year, this is the first time Red Bull have taken consecutive wins in Monaco since winning the 2010, 2011 and 2012 races back-to-back.
This was Red Bull’s 80th win overall, making them the fifth constructor to have won 80 Grands Prix. They are the first team to reach the milestone since Mercedes at the 2018 German Grand Prix.
Perez led 44 laps of the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix, which is the most laps he has ever led in a single F1 race. This was the first Monaco race not to be led from start to end by a single driver since 2017 and the first Monaco race to have had more than two lap leaders since 2012.
With 25 points for his win, Perez became the 13th driver to have scored 1,000 points in his Formula 1 career.
ON THE PODIUM
Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen joined Sergio Perez on the podium. All three drivers recorded their second Monaco Grand Prix podium appearance.
This was the first time Red Bull have recorded a 1-3 result with a Ferrari driver in second place since the 2013 Italian Grand Prix.
Carlos Sainz equalled the best result of his career with second place. This is the fourth time Sainz has finished as runner-up. He equals Romain Grosjean for fourth in the list of most F1 podiums without taking a victory.
The 2022 Monaco Grand Prix was the fifth Monaco race in a row in which a Ferrari driver has finished in second place.
Max Verstappen finished on the final step of the podium, making this the first time he has finished a race in a position other than first or second since the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, 15 finishes ago.
Verstappen recorded his 65th podium finish with Red Bull, equalling Sebastian Vettel’s tally of podium finishes with the team. He also equals Vettel for third in the all-time list of most top three finishes with a single team.
2022 is the first time since 2013 that both Red Bull drivers have finished on the podium at the Monaco Grand Prix.
LECLERC FINALLY FINISHES HIS HOME RACE
On his fourth attempt, Charles Leclerc finally finished his home race for the first time. He became the first Monegasque driver to finish their home race since Olivier Beretta in 1994 and, with fourth place, became the first Monegasque driver to score points at their home race since Louis Chiron in 1950.
Leclerc finished less than three seconds behind race winner Sergio Perez. This was the first time that the top four were covered by less than three seconds at the finish line since the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
THE POINTS SCORERS
Finishing in fifth place at the Monaco Grand Prix, George Russell remains the only driver to have finished in the top five at every race this season as well as the only driver to complete every racing lap.
Lando Norris finished in sixth place and recorded the fastest lap for the fourth time in his career. He last recorded the fastest lap at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso recorded his best result of the season so far with seventh place. It was his best result since his podium finish at the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix. He surpasses Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have scored in the third-most Formula 1 races.
In the race, Alonso broke Graham Hill’s 55 year-old-record as the driver to have raced the most laps at the Monaco Grand Prix. Alonso is only the sixth driver to hold the record in F1 history.
This was the first time Alonso has scored points at the Monaco Grand Prix since 2016.
Alonso recorded the Enstone team’s best Monaco result since Robert Kubica’s podium for Renault in 2010.
With eighth place, Lewis Hamilton recorded his worst Monaco Grand Prix result since finishing 12th in 2009.
On Lap 42 of the Monaco Grand Prix, Hamilton passed Michael Schumacher for third place in the all-time list of most laps raced in Formula 1.
Hamilton became the first driver to record 14 top ten finishes in Monaco as well as the first driver to reach the chequered flag at the track on 15 occasions.
Valtteri Bottas finished in ninth place, becoming the first driver to score multiple points for the former Sauber team in Monaco since Felipe Nasr finished ninth in 2015.
Sebastian Vettel finished tenth, marking the first time he has finished lower than fifth when he has reached chequered flag at the Monaco Grand Prix.
THE OTHER FINISHERS
Pierre Gasly finished the race in 11th place, making 2022 the first time from his four Monaco Grand Prix appearances that the Frenchman has failed to score at the event.
Finishing in 12th place following a five-second time penalty, Esteban Ocon failed to score for only the second time this season.
Daniel Ricciardo failed to score for a second consecutive Monaco Grand Prix. 13th is his worst result at a race in Monaco in which he has reached the finish line.
With both Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda finishing outside of the points, this was the first time that the Red Bull junior team has failed to score at the Monaco Grand Prix since 2012.
THE RETIREES
Both Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher failed to finish the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix, making Haas the third team to record a double DNF this year. It was the team’s first double DNF since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Before 2022, Haas had never previously recorded a retirement at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Alex Albon was the third and final driver to retire from the Monaco Grand Prix. He recorded Williams’ first non finish in Monaco since 2014. With Nicholas Latifi finishing 15th, this was Williams’ worst combined Monaco Grand Prix result since their double DNF in 2010.
Of the 12 rain affected races, Albon made this the 11th to have resulted in a retirement for the driver starting 16th on the grid.
The 2022 Monaco Grand Prix was the twelfth race in the principality to be affected by rain. Clocking in at 64 laps and one hour and 56 minutes long, it was the shortest Monaco Grand Prix in terms of laps since 1997 and the longest in terms of time since 2016. It was the first race since the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix which did not reach its full scheduled distance.
