Verstappen equals the record for most wins in a single season, Magnussen records Haas’ best-ever home result and Hamilton finishes on the United States Grand Prix podium for the tenth time. Here’s a statistic from every driver’s 2022 United States Grand Prix weekend.
🇳🇱 Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen won the 2022 United States Grand Prix, recording his 33rd Grand Prix victory. This was Verstappen’s 13th win of the year, equalling the record of most wins in a single season. The record was already shared between Michael Schumacher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013). This was Verstappen’s seventh win in the last eight races. Verstappen became only the second driver, after Lewis Hamilton, to have won multiple races at Circuit of The Americas.
🇲🇽 Sergio Perez
Becoming one of four drivers to reach ten race starts at COTA, Sergio Perez crossed the finish line for the 200th time in his career, finishing in fourth place. He became the eighth driver to have finished 200 races during their F1 career.
🇬🇧 Lewis Hamilton
At the 2022 United States Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton overtook Jenson Button as the British driver to have made the most F1 starts. He also overtook Button and Michael Schumacher for fifth in the all-time list of most starts.
In the race, Hamilton equalled his best result of the 2022 season, finishing as runner-up to Max Verstappen. It was the 32nd race in which the duo recorded a 1-2 finish, overtaking Hamilton and Rosberg as the driver pairing to have recorded the most 1-2 finishes in Formula 1. This was the third consecutive United States Grand Prix in which Hamilton has finished as runner-up.
Hamilton became the first driver to record ten podium finishes at the United States Grand Prix and remains the only driver to have completed every lap ever raced at Circuit of The Americas since the track joined the calendar in 2012. Hamilton crossed the finish line for the 278th time, equalling Kimi Raikkonen for second in the all-time list of most races at which a driver has crossed the finish line.
🇬🇧 George Russell
With fifth place at the United States Grand Prix, George Russell returned to the top five for the first time since his podium finish at the Italian Grand Prix.
🇲🇨 Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc finished in third place, recording his fifth consecutive podium finish; the longest podium streak of his career to date. This was Leclerc’s first podium finish at the United States Grand Prix. He became the 12th different driver to finish on the podium at COTA.
In total, this was Leclerc’s 23rd podium finish. He equals James Hunt, Michele Alboreto and Jacques Villeneuve for 46th in the all-time podium list. Leclerc finished on the podium from 12th on the grid. This was the first podium finish recorded from 12th on the grid in over ten years, since Sergio Perez finished as runner-up at the 2012 Italian Grand Prix.
🇪🇸 Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz secured the third pole position of his career. He secured pole by 0.061 seconds – the third smallest pole margin seen at Circuit of The Americas. This was the first time Sainz qualified in the top five at the United States Grand Prix. His previous best Saturday result at COTA was sixth, recorded in 2021.
Sunday was less successful, as Sainz was the first driver to retire from the race. This was the first time that Sainz has failed to score at the United States Grand Prix. Sainz’s retirement made the 2022 United States Grand Prix the first race at Circuit of The Americas in which the driver who started from pole failed to finish on the podium.
Sainz became the first Ferrari driver to record six retirements in a single season since Michael Schumacher in 2005. With Sainz pulling into the pits at the end of Lap 1, this was the first race in which the polesitter did not cross the line at the end of Lap 1 in first or second since the 2021 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
🇦🇺 Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo recorded his third Q1 exit in the last five races. This was his first Q1 elimination at the United States Grand Prix since 2012. It also marked the first time since 2012 that Ricciardo has been out-qualified by his team-mate at Circuit of The Americas.
🇬🇧 Lando Norris
Lando Norris qualified eighth for the third time in his three United States Grand Prix appearances. This was the first time Norris has out-qualified a team-mate at COTA. Finishing sixth, this was the fifth consecutive race in which Norris scored, becoming his longest points-scoring streak of the 2022 season. This was Norris’ best result at COTA to date.
🇪🇸 Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso appeared in Q3 at the United States Grand Prix for the first time since 2017. Despite a post race penalty which was later overturned, Alonso finished the race in seventh place. This was the first time since 2016 that Alonso has crossed the finish line at the United States Grand Prix.
🇫🇷 Esteban Ocon
Esteban Ocon qualified in 18th place, recording his second Q1 elimination in the last three races. This was the Enstone team’s first Q1 exit at the United States Grand Prix since 2016, as well as the Frenchman’s first Q1 exit at the circuit since 2016, when he drove for Manor.
🇫🇷 Pierre Gasly
A fruitless weekend for Pierre Gasly in the United States. With 13th place, he equalled his worst qualifying result at COTA, having previously qualified 13th in 2018. Finishing in 14th, Gasly made this his fourth visit to COTA on which he has failed to score at the circuit.
🇯🇵 Yuki Tsunoda
Yuki Tsunoda finished in tenth place, scoring his first point since the Spanish Grand Prix. This was Tsunoda’s fourth points-scoring race of the 2022 season. Tsunoda gained nine positions from where he started at the United States Grand Prix. Tsunoda’s ninth place made this the seventh time in the last 11 races that the driver starting 19th has scored points.
🇩🇪 Sebastian Vettel
Sebastian Vettel finished in the top eight for the third consecutive race, with a last lap overtake on Kevin Magnussen seeing him come home eighth. This was the first time Vettel finished in the top eight at three consecutive races since the 2019 German, Hungarian and Belgian Grands Prix. Vettel led two laps of the United States Grand Prix, making this the first race which he has led since the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Vettel’s two laps led takes his total of laps led to 3,501. Vettel becomes only the third driver – after Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher – to have led 3,500 laps in Formula 1.
🇨🇦 Lance Stroll
Lance Stroll qualified in seventh place, reaching Q3 for the third time this season. Seventh place is Stroll’s best qualifying result since he took pole position at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. This was the first time that Stroll has reached Q3 at the United States Grand Prix.
Stroll failed to finish the United States Grand Prix after colliding with Fernando Alonso. This was the first time that Stroll failed to cross the finish line at COTA. It was his third retirement of the 2022 season.
🇹🇭 Alex Albon
With 11th place, Alex Albon equalled Williams’ best qualifying result at the United States Grand Prix since 2016. He finished the race in 13th place, losing his 100% points-scoring streak at Circuit of The Americas. Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton remained in the group. Bruno Senna is the only other driver to have scored on every appearance at COTA.
🇨🇦 Nicholas Latifi
Maintaining his 100% Q1 exit rate at Circuit of The Americas, Nicholas Latifi qualified in last place for the sixth time in the last eight races.
🇫🇮 Valtteri Bottas
For the first time since the Hungarian Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas qualified in the top ten. In the race, Bottas recorded his sixth retirement of the year. This was the first time he’s failed to reach the finish line at the United States Grand Prix since 2015.
🇨🇳 Zhou Guanyu
For the fourth time in the last five races, Zhou Guanyu qualified in 14th place. Zhou had set a lap time good enough to join his team-mate in Q3, but it was deleted as he exceeded track limits. Zhou finished in 11th place following Alonso’s post-race penalty, which would have made this the third consecutive United States Grand Prix in which an Alfa Romeo driver finished in 11th place. However, he dropped back down to 12th as Alonso’s penalty was overturned.
🇩🇪 Mick Schumacher
Mick Schumacher maintained his 100% Q1 exit rate at Circuit of The Americas, qualifying in 19th place for the second consecutive United States Grand Prix.
🇩🇰 Kevin Magnussen
Kevin Magnussen recorded his fifth Q1 exit in the last six races. It was his third Q1 exit from six United States Grand Prix appearances. Magnussen scored for the first time since the French Grand Prix, finishing the race in ninth place. It was the first time he has scored at the United States Grand Prix since his maiden season in 2014, when he finished eighth.
