Every F1 Driver’s History at the Canadian Grand Prix

Verstappen has won the last three Canadian races from pole, Hamilton has seven Montreal wins, Ocon has a 100% points-scoring record in Canada and Stroll hopes to score on home soil for the sixth time. Here’s everything you need to know about each driver’s history at the Canadian Grand Prix!

🇳🇱 Max VERSTAPPEN

Max Verstappen has won the Canadian Grand Prix in each of the last three seasons and has scored points on six of his eight visits to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Verstappen has four podium finishes here in total, having first appeared on the Montreal podium with a third place finish in 2018.

All of Verstappen’s points-scoring appearances here have been top five results. Additionally, Verstappen finished 15th in 2015 and retired from the 2017 race.

Verstappen has reached Q3 at the Canadian Grand Prix five times and took pole position in both 2022 and 2023. He also lined up on the front row in 2024 after setting an identical lap time to polesitter George Russell.

Verstappen has been eliminated in Q2 twice, in 2015 and 2019. Despite qualifying 11th in 2019, Verstappen lined up ninth on the grid, meaning 2015 is the only time he has not lined up in the top ten.

In all of the seven races that he’s finished at the track, Verstappen has never finished in a worse position than where he started from.

🇯🇵 Yuki TSUNODA

This will be Liam Lawson’s first outing at the Canadian Grand Prix.

🇬🇧 Lando NORRIS

Lando Norris finished on the podium at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, finishing as runner-up to Max Verstappen. It marked the first time that Norris had picked up any points at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, having never previously finished in the top 12.

Norris retired with suspension damage after eight laps in 2019 and finished only 15th in 2022. He recorded what was then his best result to date at the track in the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, finishing 13th. He finished ninth on the road that year, but a post-race time penalty for “unsportsmanlike behaviour” demoted him four positions in the final order.

While Norris reached Q3 in 2019, he failed to progress past Q2 in 2022. He bettered his top qualifying result at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve last year, qualifying in seventh place. His third place in qualifying for the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix marked his first top six qualifying result at the track.

2022 is the only season in which Norris has not out-qualified his team-mate in Montreal.

Piastri was again out-qualified by Norris in 2024, qualifying in fourth position. He lost one position from where he started to score points at the track for the first time with a fifth place finish.

🇬🇧 Lewis HAMILTON

Lewis Hamilton took the first victory of his Formula 1 career at the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix. Since then he was won the event a further six times and also finished third in 2013, 2022 and 2023. The 2018 and 2024 races are the only times that he has finished the event in a position outside of the top three.

However, Hamilton’s history in Montreal hasn’t always been rosy. He retired in 2008 after failing to spot a red light at the end of the pit-lane and crashing into the back of Kimi Raikkonen. He retired in 2011 after a collision with his McLaren team-mate Jenson Button and retired in 2014 as his Mercedes suffered engine problems.

Image: © Andrew Balfour

Hamilton has taken pole at the Canadian Grand Prix six times, while 2011, 2018 and the last three races here are the only seasons in which he has not started from the front row. Seventh place in 2024 marked the first time that he qualified outside of the top five for the Canadian Grand Prix.

2014, 2018 and 2024 are the only years that Hamilton has failed to out-qualify his team-mate in Montreal. Given his usally high qualifying positions, it’s no surprise that 2024 marked the first time that Hamilton gained more than one position from where he started at this track.

2011, 2018 and the last three seasons are the only times in 15 visits to the circuit that Hamilton has not led a lap of the Canadian Grand Prix.

🇲🇨 Charles LECLERC

Charles Leclerc held a 100% points-scoring rate at the Canadian Grand Prix until 2024, when a retirement put at end to his four-race scoring streak. From his four visits prior to 2024, his best result was third place, recorded in 2019. He also finished tenth with Sauber in 2018, fifth in 2022 and fourth in 2023.

Image: © Andrew Balfour

Despite only failing to score once, 2019 is the only year in which Leclerc has reached Q3 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He was eliminated in Q2 on all of his other four visits. 2018 and 2024 are the only times that Leclerc has out-qualified his team-mate at this circuit.

Of races he’s finished here, Leclerc has never lost a position from where he has started at the Canadian Grand Prix. He started 19th in 2022 and made up 14 positions to finish fifth.

🇬🇧 George RUSSELL

George Russell recorded his first podium finish at the Canadian Grand Prix in 2024 having started from pole position. His third place marked only the second time he had scored at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, after finishing fourth in 2022.

On his first appearance at the Canadian Grand Prix in 2019, he finished 16th with Williams. He retired from the Grand Prix in 2023 with braking issues, having hit the barriers earlier in the race.

Russell reached Q3 at the circuit for the first time in 2022, qualifying in eighth place, and bettered his top qualifying result at the track in 2023 with fifth place. He took pole position in 2024 having set an identical lap time to Max Verstappen in Q3.

He had qualified on the back row in 2019. Despite being on the back row, that is one of only two times Russell has out-qualified his team-mate at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

🇮🇹 Kimi ANTONELLI

Kimi Antonelli has never previously raced at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

🇪🇸 Fernando ALONSO

Fernando Alonso finished as runner-up in the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, recording his first podium finish in Montreal since 2013, where he also finished in second place. Alonso took his only Montreal win in 2006, and has recorded four top three results in total here, having also finished third in 2010. His ninth place result in 20222 was the first time since 2014 that Alonso has scored points in Canada. He scored more points in 2024, finishing sixth.

Alonso has recorded no fewer than eight retirements at the Canadian Grand Prix. He retired on three of his last four appearances at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve prior to his F1 hiatus in 2019.

Alonso took pole at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 2006, and lined up on the front row in 2007 and 2011. He recorded his third front row start since 2011 at the track in 2022 as the result of a wet qualifying session and lined up on the front row again in 2023.

2004 and 2007 are the only years in which the Spaniard has been out-qualified by his team-mate here. Alonso has never recorded a Q1 exit at the Canadian Grand Prix, but failed to reach Q3 in 2015, 2017 and 2018.

Of the races which he has finished, the 2013 and 2014 events are the only ones in which he has finished in a better position than where he started.

🇨🇦 Lance STROLL

Lance Stroll scored the first points of his Formula 1 career with a ninth place finish in the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix. He retired on the first lap of his home race in 2018, before finishing ninth again in 2019. He scored another point at the track in 2022, with tenth place, and brought home yet another ninth place finish in 2023.

In 2024, Stroll recorded his best Canadian Grand Prix result to date, finishing in seventh place. Despite this being his fifth points-scoring race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, it was the first time he had reached Q3 at the track, qualifying in ninth place.

Image: © Andrew Balfour

2023 is the only other time he has made it out of Q1 at the track, though after qualifying 13th he was demoted to 16th on the grid. 2024 marked the first time he started in the top 15 grid positions at his home event.

2018 is the only occasion that the Canadian has out-qualified a team-mate at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. In all of the first four races he finished at the track, he gained at least seven positions from where he started.

🇫🇷 Pierre GASLY

Pierre Gasly has a 100% finishing record at the Canadian Grand Prix but has scored points in Montreal only twice. His first points scoring appearance came in 2019, when he finished eighth with Red Bull. He scored for the second time in 2024, with a ninth place finish.

Image: © Andrew Balfour

Gasly had finished 11th with Toro Rosso on his first appearance in 2018, while both the 2022 and 2023 races resulted in more finishes on the cusp of points for the Frenchman.

Gasly has been eliminated in Q1 on three occasions at the Canadian Grand Prix: in 2018, 2022 and 2023. He lined up fifth on the grid in 2019, a season which marked the first time that Gasly out-qualified his team-mate at the track; a feat he repeated in 2022 and 2024.

🇦🇺 Jack DOOHAN

While this will be Jack Doohan’s first race appearance at the Canadian Grand Prix, the Australian competed in FP1 here with Alpine in 2024 – though the weather-affected session meant that Doohan completed only a single installation lap in the car.

🇫🇷 Esteban OCON

Esteban Ocon has scored on all five appearances at the Canadian Grand Prix, with a best finish of sixth in both 2017 and 2022. Tenth, in 2024, is his worst result to date at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

In 2024, Ocon recorded a Q1 exit in Montreal, marking the first time he failed to reach Q3 here. He recorded his best qualifying result to date at the track in 2023, with sixth place. Until 2024, he had qualified one position better than on his previous appearance on every visit to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Yuki Tsunoda failed to finish on his first Canadian Grand Prix appearance in 2022. He crashed out of the race at the end of the pit lane following a pit stop. He was eliminated in Q1, setting the slowest time of the 20 drivers.

Tsunoda was again eliminated in Q1 on his second Montreal appearance at the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, though this time he out-qualified his team-mate and set the 16th fastest time. He was relegated to the back row of the grid but gained five positions over the course of the race to finish 14th.

He reached Q3 for the first time at the track in 2024, qualifying three positions behind his team-mate. After losing three places at the start, Tsunoda lost further places later in the race and spun in the closing stages to finish 14th for a second consecutive season.

🇫🇷 Isack HADJAR

The 2025 Canadian Grand Prix will mark Isack Hadjar’s first time racing at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

🇪🇸 Carlos SAINZ

Carlos Sainz has scored four times at the Canadian Grand Prix, recording his best result at the circuit so far in 2022 with the runner-up spot. He finished the 2022 race less than a second behind race winner Max Verstappen. Sainz also scored at the track with a ninth place finish in 2016, eighth in 2018 and fifth in 2023.

Sainz has recorded two retirements in Canada. In 2017, he retired on the first lap as a result of a collision with Felipe Massa. In 2024, he spun out of the race and contact with future team-mate Alex Albon brought an early end to both drivers’ races.

Sainz reached Q3 in all four races at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve from 2018 to 2023. He qualified third in 2022, marking his best qualifying result to date at the track. It remains the only time he has qualified in the top seven at the Canadian Grand Prix. In 2024, Sainz recorded his first Q2 exit in Canada since 2017.

2022 was the first time since 2015 that Sainz out-qualified his team-mate at the track. He out-qualified Charles Leclerc again in 2023.

🇹🇭 Alex ALBON

Alex Albon finished seventh in the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, scoring points at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the first time in his career.

He has recorded two DNFs here. He failed to finish on his first appearance at the event in 2019 after being involved in a first lap collision. His pace suffered throughout the race as a result and the Toro Rosso team opted to retire his car around ten laps from the end. In 2024, he was hit by a spinning Carlos Sainz, ending his race. He finished 13th with Williams in 2022.

Albon reached Q3 at the track for the first time in 2023, setting the tenth fastest lap time and lining up ninth on the final grid. He qualified tenth again in 2024. He was eliminated in Q2 on both of his other appearances at the Canadian Grand Prix. He has out-qualified his team-mate at the track in each of the last three seasons.

🇩🇪 Nico HULKENBERG

This will be Nico Hulkenberg’s 11th appearance at the Canadian Grand Prix. The 2023 Montreal race marked the first time since 2013 that Hulkenberg appeared at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and failed to score. He left point-less again in 2024, finishing 11th.

His six consecutive points-scoring races between 2014 and 2019 are the only times he has scored here, doing so with a top eight finish each time. Hulkenberg’s best result at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is fifth place, recorded in 2014. He has failed to cross the finish line in Canada only once, in 2013.

2024 marked the first time that Hulkenberg was eliminated in Q1 at the Canadian Grand Prix. He had reached Q3 on all of his previous six appearances in Montreal, with a best result of second – which is where he qualified in 2023 with Haas. Hulkenberg did not start from the front row however, as a grid penalty dropped him to fifth. 17Th, in 2024, is his worst starting position to date at the track.

Hulkenberg has been out-qualified by a team-mate here only four times, with 2019 and 2024 being the only such occasions in the last 12 years. Of the races he’s finished in Montreal, 2023 is the only one in which he has lost more than one position from where he started.
