Verstappen becomes the fifth driver to record 11 consecutive podiums, Norris records his first podium finish of the year and Perez records the best Silverstone result from 15th on the grid since 1989. Here’s a statistic from each driver’s 2023 British Grand Prix weekend!
🇳🇱 Max VERSTAPPEN
On the weekend where he became the fifth driver to make 150 appearances with a single team, Max Verstappen won from pole position for a fifth consecutive race. Verstappen secured his 27th pole position and moved ahead of Mika Hakkinen for tenth in the list of most Formula 1 pole positions. This was Verstappen’s fifth consecutive pole position, which makes this the longest pole streak of his career to date. With pole position at the 2023 British Grand Prix, Verstappen secured the 50th front row start of his Formula 1 career. He is the eighth driver to start on the front row at 50 races.
Max Verstappen secured his first British Grand Prix win on Sunday. He had previously won at Silverstone, however, with a win at the one-off 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020. Taking his sixth consecutive win, Verstappen became only the fifth driver – after Alberto Ascari, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg – to take six Grand Prix wins in a row.
With his 11th consecutive podium finish, Verstappen became only the fifth driver in Formula 1 history to secure top three finishes at 11 races in a row. Verstappen is the first driver to achieve the feat since Lewis Hamilton in 2015.
🇲🇽 Sergio PEREZ
Sergio Perez failed to qualify in the top ten for a fifth consecutive race. It’s the first time that Red Bull have failed to reach Q3 with at least one car at five consecutive races since the end of the 2008 season. This was the first time that Perez has recorded a Q1 exit at the British Grand Prix – though he qualified 20th in 2021 as a result of Sprint Qualifying. Perez became only the second Red Bull driver – after Daniel Ricciardo in 2017 – to record a Q1 exit at the British Grand Prix.
Perez gained nine positions throughout the 2023 British Grand Prix to finish sixth. It’s the most positions he has ever gained in a race at Silverstone. Perez became the first driver who started 15th at Silverstone to finish in the top six since Luis Pérez-Sala, who finished sixth at the 1989 British Grand Prix.
🇲🇨 Charles LECLERC
Along with Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc maintained his 100% Q3 appearance record at Silverstone. Leclerc finished ninth in the 2023 British Grand Prix. It was the first time he recorded a result outside of the top four positions at Silverstone since his retirement with Sauber in 2018.
🇪🇸 Carlos SAINZ
Picking up a single point for his 10th place finish, Carlos Sainz recorded his second-worst result of the 2023 season to date at the British Grand Prix. He finished 12th at the Australian Grand Prix following a post race time penalty.
🇬🇧 Lewis HAMILTON
Lewis Hamilton recorded his worst British Grand Prix qualifying result since 2012 with sevenht place. Nevertheless, recording his 17th top ten qualification at Silverstone, Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher as the driver to have recorded the most top ten qualifications at the circuit.
In the race, Hamilton recorded his 14th podium finish at Silverstone, extending his record for the most top three finishes at a single venue. This was his 11th consecutive podium finish at the track. Hamilton recorded the first podium finish for a driver starting seventh at the British Grand Prix since Juan Pablo Montoya, who finished second in 2003. It was the first time since 2017 that a podium finish at Silverstone has come from outside of the top five grid slots. With his points haul from his third place finish, Hamilton became the first driver to have scored 300 points at Silverstone.
🇬🇧 George RUSSELL
George Russell out-qualified Lewis Hamilton for the first time since the 2023 Miami Grand Prix. Sixth is Russell’s best British Grand Prix qualifying result to date. Finishing fifth in the 2023 British Grand Prix, Russell picked up points at his home race for the first time in his Formula 1 career.
🇫🇷 Esteban OCON
With 13th place in qualifying for the 2023 British Grand Prix, Esteban Ocon recorded his worst qualifying result of the 2023 season to date. 2018 remains the only time that Ocon has out-qualified a team-mate at Silverstone. Ocon was the first retiree from the 2023 British Grand Prix, recording his third DNF of the year.
🇫🇷 Pierre GASLY
Pierre Gasly recorded his second non-finish of the year. Like team-mate Esteban Ocon, who also retired, this was the second consecutive season in which he retired from the British Grand Prix. With both Ocon and Gasly retiring, Alpine recorded their second double retirement of the 2023 season. This was the Enstone team’s first double DNF at Silverstone since 2016.
🇬🇧 Lando NORRIS
Lando Norris joined Max Verstappen on the front row of the grid at the 2023 British Grand Prix. This was the third time that Norris started on the front row in his Formula 1 career, after the 2021 Austrian and Russian Grands Prix. Norris maintained his record of having never been out-qualified by his team-mate at Silverstone and recorded McLaren’s first front row qualification at Silverstone since Heikki Kovalainen took pole at the 2008 British Grand Prix.
With second place in the race, Norris recorded his first podium finish since the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and equalled his career-best result. He also finished as runner-up at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix. Norris became the first British driver other than Lewis Hamilton to finish on the podium at their home race since David Coulthard at the 2000 British Grand Prix.
Leading the first four laps of the race, Norris led a Formula 1 race for the first time since the 2021 Russian Grand Prix. In addition to the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, the 2023 British Grand Prix was the third race at which Norris led a lap.
🇦🇺 Oscar PIASTRI
Oscar Piastri recorded his best qualifying and race result so far in Formula 1 at the 2023 British Grand Prix. After qualifying third – the first top eight qualification of his career – Piastri went on to finish fourth. With Lando Norris on the podium and Piastri fourth, McLaren scored more points in the 2023 British Grand Prix than they did in the entire season up until the Silverstone race. It was the first time since 2010 that both McLaren drivers finished in the top four at Silverstone.
🇫🇮 Valtteri BOTTAS
Valtteri Bottas was eliminated in Q2 for a second consecutive season at the British Grand Prix. Bottas did not participate in the session as he came to a stop on track at the end of Q1. He was later disqualified due to not being able to supply a sample of fuel.
🇨🇳 ZHOU Guanyu
Zhou Guanyu was eliminated in Q1 for a third consecutive race. This was the first time in his career that Zhou was eliminated in Q1 at three races in a row. Zhou finished the race in 15th place, making it past the first lap at Silverstone for the first time in his career.
🇪🇸 Fernando ALONSO
Fernando Alonso made his 20th start at the Silverstone circuit, equalling Kimi Raikkonen’s record of 20 starts at the track. Along with Lewis Hamilton, Alonso also equalled Raikkonen for the most number of races completed at the British venue (18).
On Lap 34 of the 2023 British Grand Prix, Alonso overtook Rubens Barrichello as the driver to have raced the most Grand Prix laps at Silverstone. After the 2023 race, Alonso has raced 1,068 laps at the track.
On his 150th start in car number 14, Alonso equalled both his worst qualifying result of the season so far (ninth) and his worst race result of 2023 to date (seventh).
🇨🇦 Lance STROLL
Finishing 14th at the 2023 British Grand Prix, Lance Stroll finished 14th for the 13th time in his career. That saw him overtake Pastor Maldonado and set a new record as the driver to have recorded the most 14th place finishes in their Formula 1 career. This was Stroll’s worst British Grand Prix result since finishing 16th in his maiden season in 2017.
🇩🇰 Kevin MAGNUSSEN
Bringing the red flags out in Q1 after coming to halt in the final sector, Kevin Magnussen recorded his 61st Q1 exit. That saw him equal Lance Stroll for second in the list of most Q1 exits in Formula 1. Magnussen qualified on the back row at consecutive races for the first time in his Formula 1 career. This was the first time Magnussen set the slowest qualifying time since the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix.
With his sixth Q1 exit at Silverstone, Magnussen equalled Jenson Button’s record tally of six Q1 eliminations at the British venue. Magnussen has been eliminated in Q1 on all of his last five appearances at Silverstone.
In the race, Magnussen retired for the third time this year. In total, this was Magnussen’s fifth retirement at Silverstone.
🇩🇪 Nico HULKENBERG
Nico Hulkenberg finished 13th in the 2023 British Grand Prix. Aside from his DNS at the 2020 British Grand Prix, this was the German’s worst-ever result at Silverstone and one of only three occasions on which he has failed to score at the track.
🇯🇵 Yuki TSUNODA
Qualifying 17th, Tsunoda equalled his worst qualifying result of the 2023 season so far at the British Grand Prix. He also qualified 17th at the Miami Grand Prix. This was the first time Tsunoda out-qualified his team-mate at Silverstone. Tsunoda recorded his worst British Grand Prix result so far in his career with a 16th place finish.
🇳🇱 Nyck DE VRIES
AlphaTauri were the only team to record a double Q1 exit at the 2023 British Grand Prix. With both Yuki Tsunoda and Nyck de Vries out in Q1, this is the first time that the Red Bull junior team has recorded double Q1 exits at three consecutive races since the 2009 Turkish, British and German Grands Prix. This was the team’s first double Q1 elimination at the British Grand Prix since 2011.
The 2023 British Grand Prix turned out to be De Vries’ last Formula 1 appearance with AlphaTauri. Two days after the Silverstone race, the team announced he would be replaced by Daniel Ricciardo for the remainder of the season.
🇹🇭 Alex ALBON
Qualifying eighth, Alex Albon equalled his best Saturday result of the season to date at the 2023 British Grand Prix. He also qualified eighth at the Australian Grand Prix. This was Albon’s best-ever qualifying result at Silverstone, having previously qualified ninth at both the 2019 British Grand Prix and the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. Albon’s Q3 appearance made this the first time that Williams reached Q3 at three consecutive races since the 2017 Bahrain, Russian and Spanish Grands Prix.
Alex Albon brought home points for Williams with an eighth place finish. It equalled his second-best Silverstone result, having also finished eighth in the 2020 British Grand Prix. Albon became the first Williams driver to score points at the British Grand Prix since Felipe Massa in 2017.
🇺🇸 Logan SARGEANT
Qualifying 14th for the 2023 British Grand Prix, Logan Sargeant recorded his best qualifying result in Formula 1 so far. He went on to record the best race result of his career to date with 11th place. The 2023 British Grand Prix marked the first time since 2016 that both Williams drivers qualified in the top 14 at Silverstone.
