Hamilton is in search of a record-breaking ninth home win, Verstappen could become the fifth driver to record 11 consecutive podiums and Red Bull could equal the record for most consecutive team wins in Formula 1. Here are the milestones and the records which could be broken at the 2023 British Grand Prix!
THE 2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX MILESTONES
The 2023 British Grand Prix will be the 1,089th World Championship event in Formula 1 history.
This will be the 78th time that Formula 1 has raced in Great Britain. It will be the 58th Grand Prix held at Silverstone. 57 of the previous races at the track have been British Grands Prix. The circuit also hosted the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020.
This will be the 78th British Grand Prix since the event was first held in 1926. It will be the 74th time that the race has been run as a round of the Formula 1 World Championship.
This weekend, Fernando Alonso makes his 20th start at the Silverstone circuit. Kimi Raikkonen is the only other driver to have made 20 starts here. Alonso will be the first driver to contest the British Grand Prix 20 times at the circuit.
The 2023 British Grand Prix will be Max Verstappen’s 150th start with Red Bull. He becomes only the fifth driver to have made 150 appearances with a single team and equals David Coulthard’s tally of starts with McLaren.
The 2023 British Grand Prix marks Fernando Alonso’s 150th start in car number 14. He becomes the tenth driver to have made 150 appearances with a single car number, a milestone which Kevin Magnussen reached at the previous race.
The 2023 British Grand Prix will be the third round of the World Championship to be held on July 9. The last race held on this date was the 2017 Austrian Grand Prix.
The 47th lap of the 2023 British Grand Prix will be the 3,700th Grand Prix racing lap to take place at Silverstone.
HAMILTON ON HOME SOIL
If Lewis Hamilton wins the 2023 British Grand Prix, it would be his ninth win at Silverstone. That would be a new record for the most wins at a single circuit.
Victory for Lewis Hamilton at the 2023 British Grand Prix would see him equal Michael Schumacher as the driver to have taken the most wins on home soil in Formula 1 history. Hamilton has won at Silverstone eight times so far in his career, compared to Schumacher’s nine wins in Germany. Pole position for Lewis Hamilton at the 2023 British Grand Prix would see him equal the record for most pole positions at a single circuit. This would be his eighth pole at Silverstone.
A podium finish for Lewis Hamilton at the 2023 British Grand Prix would see him extend the record for most podium finishes at a single circuit to 14.
Should Lewis Hamilton record the fastest lap at the 2023 British Grand Prix, he would equal the record for most fastest laps at a single circuit. Michael Schumacher set the fastest lap at Catalunya seven times during his career, while Hamilton has seven fastest laps at Monza.
A fastest lap for Lewis Hamilton at the 2023 British Grand Prix would be his seventh at Silverstone and would see him overtake Nigel Mansell as the driver to have recorded the most fastest laps at the track.
If Lewis Hamilton scores seven points in the 2023 British Grand Prix, he will become the first driver to record 300 points at Silverstone. Meanwhile, Ferrari will become the first team to score 500 points at the track this weekend if their drivers score nine points between them.
Should he lead 48 laps of the 2023 British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton will become the first driver to have led 400 racing laps at Silverstone. If he leads 24 laps, Lewis Hamilton will overtake Jim Clark as the driver to have led the most laps at the British Grand Prix in Formula 1 history.
VERSTAPPEN AND RED BULL CAN BREAK MORE F1 RECORDS AT SILVERSTONE
Having won all of the last ten races, Red Bull will equal the record for most consecutive wins for a team in Formula 1 if they take victory at the 2023 British Grand Prix. McLaren are the only other team to have won 11 races in a row, having done so between the 1988 Brazilian and Belgian Grands Prix.
Victory for Red Bull would make them only the second team, after McLaren in 1988, to have won all of the first nine races of a Formula 1 season.
If both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez finish on the podium at the 2023 British Grand Prix, Red Bull will become the fifth team to have recorded 250 podium finishes in Formula 1.
At the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen recorded his fifth consecutive victory, equalling the longest winning streak of his career. Verstappen is searching for his sixth win in a row at the 2023 British Grand Prix. Victory would make him only the fifth driver – after Alberto Ascari, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg – to have won as many as six races in a row.
Verstappen also equalled his longest pole streak with his fourth consecutive pole at the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix. Another pole at the 2023 British Grand Prix would make this the 24th time that a driver has taken five consecutive poles in Formula 1.
Having finished on the podium at all of the last ten races, Verstappen is looking to become only the fifth driver to have taken 11 consecutive top three results in Formula 1. He would be the first driver to do so since Lewis Hamilton in 2015.
A front row start for Max Verstappen at the 2023 British Grand Prix would make him the eighth driver to have made 50 front row starts during his Formula 1 career.
THE OTHER FORMULA 1 RECORDS TO BREAK
A fastest lap for Ferrari at the 2023 British Grand Prix would see them equal their own record for most fastest laps at a single circuit. Ferrari have taken 19 fastest laps at Monza and 18 so far at Silverstone.
Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have scored in all of the last three Grands Prix. If both Aston Martin drivers score on Sunday, it would be the first time that the Silverstone-based team have picked up points with both cars in four consecutive Grands Prix since the four events between the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix and the 2020 Italian Grand Prix.
A top ten finish for Nico Hulkenberg would make this the 100th race weekend at which he has scored points. That includes the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix, at which he only scored points in the Sprint.
A double Q1 exit for AlphaTauri would mark the first time that the Red Bull junior team has recorded double Q1 exits at three consecutive races since the 2009 Turkish, British and German Grands Prix.
A Q1 elimination for Kevin Magnussen would see him equal Lance Stroll for second in the list of most Q1 exits in Formula 1, if the Canadian isn’t eliminated in Q1 himself.
If Zhou Guanyu is eliminated in Q1 at the 2023 British Grand Prix, it would be the first time he has failed to reach Q2 at three consecutive races in his Formula 1 career.
If either Red Bull driver misses out on reaching Q3 at the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix, this would be the first time since the end of the 2008 season that the team has failed to reach Q3 with at least one car at five consecutive races.
If either Mercedes driver reaches Q3 at the 2023 British Grand Prix, it would be the 250th time that both of the Brackley-based team’s cars have appeared in Q3 since the knockout qualifying system was introduced in 2006. They would be the second team to reach the milestone, after Ferrari – who did so at the 2023 Miami Grand Prix.
Red Bull will continue to lead the Constructors’ Championship after the 2023 British Grand Prix, having led it after every race since the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix. It will be the 27th consecutive round of the championship after which they have led the team standings. That will see them equal their own longest streak of consecutive races spent leading the championship. They also led after 27 consecutive races between the 2010 Hungarian Grand Prix and the 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix.
At the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, Max Verstappen joined a small group of drivers who’ve won a race from eight different grid positions. Verstappen is one grid position away from equalling Fernando Alonso as the driver to have won from the most different grid slots in F1. Verstappen will equal the record should he win from 5th, 6th, 8th, 11th, 12th, 13th or any grid position further back than 14th.
Max Verstappen could equal Sebastian Vettel as the driver to have taken the fourth-most wins without starting from pole position. Verstappen has won 21 races so far in his career without having taken pole position for the Grand Prix.
Having already won the Saudi Arabian and Singapore Grands Prix, one more victory for Sergio Perez in 2023 would make this the first season in which he has won three Grands Prix in a single year.
If Fernando Alonso wins any race this season, he will become the oldest driver to win a Grand Prix since Jack Brabham at the 1970 South African Grand Prix. Brabham won that race at the age of 43 years, 11 months and 5 days.
If Fernando Alonso lines up fifth on the grid, he will equal Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have lined up fifth on the grid on the most occasions in Formula 1. Raikkonen started fifth on 39 occasions during his career.
A fifth place finish for Fernando Alonso in the 2023 British Grand Prix would see him equal Jenson Button for the most fifth place finishes in Formula 1. Button finished fifth on 27 occasions during his career.
If Logan Sargeant picks up two points this weekend, the United States would become the tenth nation to have scored 1,000 points in Formula 1. American drivers have been stuck on 998 points since the 1993 Italian Grand Prix, when Michael Andretti scored the last points of his career with a podium finish for McLaren.
A podium finish for Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri would make 2023 the 50th season in which a McLaren driver has finished on the podium.
If a British driver takes pole position at any race in 2023, it would be the 20th consecutive season in which a British driver has taken pole. It would be a new record for most consecutive seasons in which a nation has taken a pole position, overtaking Britain’s long-standing record of 19 seasons with a pole position between 1955 and 1973.
An eighth place finish for Nico Hulkenberg would see him equal Jenson Button and Carlos Sainz as the driver with the most eighth place finishes in Formula 1. Button recorded his 20th and final eighth place finish at the 2016 German Grand Prix, while Sainz equalled Button’s record at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix.
A 14th place finish for Lance Stroll would see him set a new record for the most 14th place finishes in Formula 1. He currently shares the record with Pastor Maldonado.
A double Q1 exit for Williams would make them the first constructor to record 70 double Q1 exits. Other teams have done so in the past, but Williams will be the first to do so having had a single constructor name during that time. Other ‘teams’ to have reached 70 double Q1 eliminations are the Silverstone team (Midland, Spyker, Force India, Racing Point, Aston Martin), the Caterham team (Team Lotus, Caterham) and the Manor team (Virgin, Marussia, Manor).
2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX: RECORDS TO BREAK
If he reaches Lap 34 of the 2023 British Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso will set a new record for most racing laps completed at Silverstone. He currently sits third in the all-time list – 20 behind former team-mate Kimi Raikkonen and 33 behind current record-holder Rubens Barrichello.
Ferrari set a new record for most wins at Silverstone with victory at the 2022 British Grand Prix. They could extend the record further in 2023 to 13 wins at the track, while Williams could equal the existing record.
A podium finish for Ferrari would see them become the first team to have taken 60 podium results at the British Grand Prix in its World Championship history.
If a team other than Red Bull, Mercedes or Ferrari win the 2023 British Grand Prix it would be the third time that four consecutive races at Silverstone have all been won by different teams. It last happened at the four races between 2006 and 2009.
If they finish in second place, Fernando Alonso, Valtteri Bottas or Lewis Hamilton would set a new record for most second place finishes at Silverstone. Max Verstappen could equal the existing record of three.
Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton will equal Kimi Raikkonen’s record of 18 finishes at Silverstone if they cross the finish line on Sunday.
If they’re out on the opening lap, Carlos Sainz, Max Verstappen, George Russell, Zhou Guanyu and Alex Albon would become only the second driver – after Jackie Oliver – to record multiple first lap retirements at Silverstone.
2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX: QUALIFYING RECORDS
Pole position for a Mercedes-powered car at the 2023 British Grand Prix would see the German manufacturer equal Ferrari’s record tally of pole positions at the British Grand Prix. Ferrari-powered cars have taken pole at the British Grand Prix on 16 occasions in the past.
If he qualifies in the top ten, Lewis Hamilton will equal Michael Schumacher as the driver to have qualified in the top ten on the most occasions at Silverstone. Schumacher qualified in the top ten on 17 occasions at Silverstone during his career.
Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris and Zhou Guanyu will be hoping to maintain their 100% Q3 appearance rates at the British Grand Prix.
If he’s eliminated in Q1, Kevin Magnussen will equal Jenson Button’s record tally of six Q1 exits at Silverstone.
HAMILTON SEARCHES FOR FIRST VICTORY SINCE 2021
Victory for Lewis Hamilton would see car number 44 equal car number 2 as the car number to have taken the third most wins in Formula 1.
A victory for Lewis Hamilton at any race in 2023 would see him move into the top 20 of the oldest drivers to win a Grand Prix in Formula 1. He would overtake Damon Hill as the third-oldest British driver to have won a Grand Prix.
If Lewis Hamilton wins any race this year, he’ll overtake Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have had the longest gap between his first and last Grand Prix victories. He’d also be the first driver to have won after the 300th race of his career. Fernando Alonso would break the record if he were to take victory.
A victory for Lewis Hamilton would make him the first driver to have won in 16 different Formula 1 seasons. 2022 is the only season during his career in which Hamilton has not taken a victory.
WILL MERCEDES BE BACK IN THE FIGHT?
A victory for Mercedes would make 2023 the 12th consecutive season in which the team has won a race. They would be only the third team to win in 12 consecutive seasons, after Ferrari (1994-2013) and McLaren (1981-1993).
Pole position for Mercedes would see them become only the second team, after Ferrari between 1994 and 2008, to have taken pole positions in 12 consecutive seasons.
Victory for a Mercedes-powered car would see them become only the third engine manufacturer to have won in 17 consecutive Formula 1 seasons. The only other manufacturers to have done so are Ferrari (20 seasons, between 1994-2013) and Ford Cosworth (17 seasons, between 1967-1983).
If three Mercedes-powered cars finish on the podium, Mercedes will equal Renault’s record tally of seventeen podium lockouts for an engine manufacturer.
