Verstappen is the first driver in seven years to record six consecutive wins, Red Bull equal the record for the longest F1 winning streak and two British drivers finish on the Silverstone podium for the first time since 1999. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2023 British Grand Prix!
VERSTAPPEN WINS 2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX
Max Verstappen took victory at the 2023 British Grand Prix, securing the 43rd win of his Formula 1 career. This was Verstappen’s first British Grand Prix win. He had previously won at Silverstone, however, with a win at the one-off 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020.
Taking his sixth consecutive win, Max Verstappen became only the fifth driver – after Alberto Ascari, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg – to take six Grand Prix wins in a row.
With their 11th consecutive win, Red Bull equalled the record for most consecutive Grand Prix victories. McLaren previously won 11 races in a row between the 1988 Brazilian and Belgian Grands Prix. Red Bull also became only the second team, after McLaren in 1988, to have won all of the first ten races of a season.
This was Red Bull’s first British Grand Prix victory since Mark Webber won in 2012. It was the team’s fifth win in total at the Silverstone circuit.
With his 11th consecutive podium finish, Verstappen became only the fifth driver in Formula 1 history to secure top three finishes at 11 races in a row. Verstappen is the first driver to achieve the feat since Lewis Hamilton in 2015.
Securing the 26th fastest lap of his Formula 1 career, Max Verstappen moved ahead of Mika Hakkinen to eighth in the all-time list of most fastest laps in F1.
After the 2023 British Grand Prix, Red Bull are at the top of the Constructors’ Championship for the 27th race in a row. That matches their longest streak at the top of the standings. They also led after 27 rounds in a row between the 2010 Hungarian Grand Prix and the 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix.
TWO BRITS ON THE BRITISH GRAND PRIX PODIUM
For the first time since 1999, two British drivers finished on the podium at the British Grand Prix. Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton became the first British duo to finish on the Silverstone podium since Eddie Irvine and David Coulthard.
With second place, Lando Norris recorded his first podium finish since the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and equalled his career-best result. He also finished as runner-up at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix.
Norris became the first British driver other than Lewis Hamilton to finish on the podium at their home race since David Coulthard at the 2000 British Grand Prix.
Norris’ podium finish at the 2023 British Grand Prix makes 2023 the 50th Formula 1 season in which McLaren have recorded a podium result.
Norris is the first McLaren driver to finish on the podium at the British Grand Prix since Lewis Hamilton, who also finished as runner-up in 2010.
Leading the first four laps of the race, Norris led a Formula 1 race for the first time since the 2021 Russian Grand Prix. In addition to the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, the 2023 British Grand Prix was the third race at which Norris had led a lap.
This was the first time since the Australian Grand Prix that the polesitter did not lead at the end of the first lap.
Hamilton recorded his 14th podium finish at Silverstone, extending his record for the most top three finishes at a single venue. This was his 11th consecutive podium finish at the track.
Hamilton’s third place finish made this the 12th consecutive Silverstone race in which a Mercedes driver has finished on the podium.
Hamilton recorded the first podium finish for a driver starting seventh at the British Grand Prix since Juan Pablo Montoya, who finished second in 2003. It’s the first time since 2017 that a podium finish at Silverstone has come from outside of the top five grid slots.
With his points haul from his third place finish, Hamilton became the first driver to have scored 300 points at Silverstone.
The 2023 British Grand Prix is the first race at which Red Bull, McLaren and Mercedes have shared the podium positions since the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix.
IN THE POINTS AT SILVERSTONE
Oscar Piastri recorded the best result of his Formula 1 career to date at the 2023 British Grand Prix with fourth place. It was the first top seven result of his career.
Norris’ podium and Piastri’s fourth place finish meant that McLaren scored more points in the 2023 British Grand Prix than they did in the entire season up until the Silverstone race. It was the first time since 2010 that both McLaren drivers finished in the top four at Silverstone.
Finishing fifth, George Russell picked up points at his home race for the first time in his Formula 1 career.
Sergio Perez gained nine positions throughout the 2023 British Grand Prix to finish sixth. It’s the most positions he has ever gained in a race at Silverstone.
Perez became the first driver who started 15th at Silverstone to finish in the top six since Luis Pérez-Sala, who finished sixth at the 1989 British Grand Prix.
On Lap 34 of the 2023 British Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso overtook Rubens Barrichello as the driver to have raced the most Grand Prix laps at Silverstone. After the 2023 race, Alonso has now raced 1,068 laps at the track.
With seventh place, Alonso equalled his worst result of the 2023 season so far. He also finished seventh at the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix.
Both crossing the finish line for an 18th time at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso equalled Kimi Raikkonen’s record of most races completed at the British venue.
Alex Albon brought home points for Williams with an eighth place finish. It equalled his second-best Silverstone result, having also finished eighth in the 2020 British Grand Prix.
Albon is the first Williams driver to score points at the British Grand Prix since Felipe Massa in 2017. Albon recorded the team’s best result at Silverstone since both drivers finished in the top five in 2015.
With Charles Leclerc ninth and Carlos Sainz tenth at the 2023 British Grand Prix, this was the first time since 2010 that neither Ferrari driver finished in the top eight at the British Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc finished ninth at the 2023 British Grand Prix. It was the first time he recorded a result outside of the top four positions at Silverstone since his retirement with Sauber in 2018.
Picking up a single point for his 10th place finish, Carlos Sainz recorded his second-worst result of the 2023 season to date. He finished 12th at the Australian Grand Prix following a post race time penalty.
THE OTHER FINISHERS
With 11th place, Logan Sargeant recorded the best result of his Formula 1 career so far.
Nico Hulkenberg finished 13th in the 2023 British Grand Prix. Aside from his DNS at the 2020 British Grand Prix, this was the German’s worst-ever result at Silverstone and one of only three occasions on which he has failed to score at the track.
Finishing 14th at the 2023 British Grand Prix, Lance Stroll finished 14th for the 13th time in his career. That saw him overtake Pastor Maldonado and set a new record as the driver to have recorded the most 14th place finishes in their Formula 1 career.
This was Stroll’s worst British Grand Prix result since finishing 16th in his maiden season in 2017.
Yuki Tsunoda recorded his worst British Grand Prix result so far in his career with a 16th place finish.
THE RETIREES
Esteban Ocon was the first retiree from the 2023 British Grand Prix, recording his third DNF of the 2023 season.
Pierre Gasly recorded his second non-finish of the year. Like team-mate Ocon, this was the second consecutive season in which he retired from the British Grand Prix.
With both Ocon and Gasly retiring, Alpine recorded their second double retirement of the 2023 season. Both drivers also retired from the 2023 Australian Grand Prix. This was the Enstone team’s first double DNF at Silverstone since 2016.
Kevin Magnussen retired for the third time this year. In total, this was Magnussen’s fifth retirement at Silverstone.
