Verstappen equals Senna’s win tally and delivers Red Bull’s 100th victory, Alonso moves up to fifth in the list of most podiums and Albon records Williams’ best result in almost two years. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix!
VERSTAPPEN EQUALS SENNA’S WIN TALLY
Max Verstappen recorded his 41st career victory at the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, equalling Ayrton Senna for fifth in the list of most Formula 1 wins.
Verstappen’s victory saw Red Bull become the fifth team – after Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and Mercedes – to record a century of Formula 1 victories. Red Bull achieved their 100 wins in the space of 281 races – a new record for the fewest races in which a constructor has done so, three fewer than Williams.
Verstappen became only the fifth driver – after Alberto Ascari, Jim Clark, Ayrton Senna and Sebastian Vettel – to have led every lap at three consecutive races.
Verstappen is the seventh driver to have won multiple races at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and the fourth – after Alan Jones, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton – to win consecutive races at the track.
Taking victory from pole position, Verstappen became the fifth driver to have won 20 World Championship races from pole position.
Winning for the ninth race in a row, Red Bull equalled their longest winning streak in Formula 1. They’ve previously won nine races in a row twice: between the 2013 Belgian & Brazilian Grands Prix and between the 2022 French & Mexico City Grands Prix.
Red Bull maintain their 100% win rate in 2023, becoming only the third team – after McLaren in 1988 and Mercedes in 2019 – to win all of the first eight races of the season.
During the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen became the fifth driver to have led 200 consecutive laps in Formula 1. He is the first driver to do so since Sebastian Vettel in 2012. His consecutive laps led streak now stands at 224 – the longest such streak since Nigel Mansell led 235 laps in a row between the 1992 Brazilian and Monaco Grands Prix.
Leading every lap, Verstappen became the seventh driver to have led ten Formula 1 races from start to finish.
This is only the fifth time that a driver has led every lap of a race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The other drivers to achieve the feat are Nelson Piquet in 1984, Michael Schumacher in 1994, Lewis Hamilton in 2017 and Sebastian Vettel in 2018.
Red Bull have now led all of the last 320 Grand Prix laps in Formula 1. It’s the sixth longest leading streak for a team in the sport’s history.
Verstappen picked up points for the 27th consecutive race weekend, equalling the longest points-scoring streak of Kimi Raikkonen’s career. It puts him third in the list of the longest points streaks in Formula 1.
ON THE 2023 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX PODIUM
With second place at the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso recorded the 104th podium finish of his career. That saw him overtake Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have scored the fifth most podiums in Formula 1 history.
This was Alonso’s first podium at the Canadian Grand Prix since 2013, when he also finished as runner-up.
With Alonso finishing 9.570 seconds behind Max Verstappen, this was the second race of the year in which a team has finished within 20 seconds of the winning Red Bull. The only other time it has happened this year was at the Australian Grand Prix, which finished under Safety Car conditions.
On Lap 53 of the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, Alonso became the third driver – after Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen – to have raced 1,000 Grand Prix laps at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
With second place, Alonso recorded the Silverstone-based team’s first podium finish at the Canadian Grand Prix since 1997. He also equalled the team’s best ever result at the venue. Rubens Barrichello finished second with the team in its Jordan guide at the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix.
Finishing third, Lewis Hamilton equalled Jean Alesi and Eddie Irvine as the driver to have recorded the most third place finishes at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. This was his third time finishing in third place in Canada.
This was the first time Hamilton has recorded consecutive podium results in 2023.
Hamilton’s podium made Britain the first nation to record 25 podium finishes at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. It moved Britain ahead of Germany, setting a new outright record for most podiums for a nation at the track.
This was the first time since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix that Hamilton finished in the same position as he started.
Hamilton’s podium ensured that Mercedes maintained their record of finishing on the podium in every Canadian Grand Prix since 2013.
The 2023 Canadian Grand Prix is the third race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve – after 1979 and 2018 – in which the top three on the grid finished in the same order as they started.
IN THE POINTS
With fourth place, Charles Leclerc record his best result since finishing on the podium at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
For the fourth time in the last five races, Carlos Sainz finished in fifth place.
This was the tenth consecutive Canadian Grand Prix in which both Ferrari drivers picked up points. However, it was the first since 2017 in which neither Ferrari driver finished on the podium.
Sergio Perez finished the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix in sixth place. Failing to finish on the podium for the third race in a row, this is now his longest streak without a podium since the 2022 Austrian, French and Hungarian Grands Prix.
This was the first time since 2017 that Perez scored points at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Alex Albon finished an impressive seventh for Williams. It was the team’s best result since George Russell finished on the podium at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. Seventh is Albon’s best result since finishing fourth with Red Bull at the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It’s the first time he has scored points in Canada.
For the fourth time in his career, Albon was voted Driver Of The Day. He was also awarded the accolade at the 2019 Chinese Grand Prix, the 2019 United States Grand Prix and the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix.
Albon’s result is the best finish for the Williams team in Canada since Valtteri Bottas finished on the podium at the 2016 Canadian Grand Prix.
Esteban Ocon finished in eighth place at the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix. Scoring four points, he overtook Romain Grosjean as the French driver to have scored the second-most points in Formula 1.
Both Charles Leclerc and Esteban Ocon maintained their 100% points-scoring records at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The 2023 Canadian Grand Prix marked their fourth appearances at the venue without failing to score. That saw them equal Gilles Villeneuve as the driver to have made the most appearances without failing to score in Montreal.
Lance Stroll finished ninth in the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix. This was the fourth time in five appearances at his home event that Stroll has picked up points. It’s the third time he has done so by finishing in ninth place.
With Stroll ninth and Fernando Alonso second, the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix was the first Montreal race in which both of the Silverstone-based team’s drivers finished in the points since 2017.
With Valtteri Bottas finishing tenth, this was the 418th Grand Prix in which a Finnish driver has picked up a point. That sees Finland overtake Italy as the nation to have scored in the fifth-most Formula 1 races.
This was the first time Bottas has scored since the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. It’s the eighth consecutive Canadian Grand Prix in which the Finn has scored.
Bottas’ tenth place marks the first time this season that the driver starting 14th has scored a point in a Grand Prix.
THE OTHER FINISHERS
With Oscar Piastri finishing 11th and Lando Norris 13th after his post race penalty was applied, McLaren continued their point-less streak at the Canadian Grand Prix. 2014 remains the last time that the team scored in Montreal.
Norris remains yet to score any points at the Canadian Grand Prix during his F1 career.
Pierre Gasly finished the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix in 12th place, failing to score for the first time since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
With Yuki Tsunoda 14th and Nyck de Vries 18th, AlphaTauri failed to score any points for the fourth consecutive Grand Prix. This is team’s longest point-less streak since the four races between the 2022 British and Hungarian Grands Prix.
After starting fifth in the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, Nico Hulkenberg finished the race in 15th place. He lost ten positions over the course of the race – the most places he has ever lost in a Grand Prix which he has completed.
This was the first Canadian Grand Prix which Nico Hulkenberg has started since 2013 in which he has failed to score any points.
This was the fourth consecutive Canadian Grand Prix in which Haas have failed to score any points.
Kevin Magnussen finished 17th at the Canadian Grand Prix for a third consecutive visit to the track.
THE RETIREES
Logan Sargeant became the first retirement of the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix after being told to stop his car. The Williams driver recorded the second retirement of his career, having also failed to finish in Australia.
After hitting the wall earlier on in the race, George Russell became the second retirement from the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix. This was Russell’s second retirement of the 2023 season, after the Australian Grand Prix, and he became the first Mercedes driver to retire in Montreal since Lewis Hamilton retired with mechanical issues back in 2014.
Russell recorded the first retirement for a driver starting fourth on the grid at the Canadian Grand Prix since Fernando Alonso in 2008.
BERND MAYLANDER BREAKS 73 YEAR OLD F1 RECORD
When the Safety Car was deployed as a result of George Russell’s crash on Lap 12 of the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, Bernd Maylander became the oldest driver to have ‘led’ a Grand Prix. Maylander broke the record set by Luigi Fagioli at the 1950 Belgian Grand Prix – 73 years to the day since it was set.
