Sainz ends Red Bull’s winning streak, Ferrari take their first victory in 14 months and Alonso reaches 100,00km raced. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix!
SAINZ WINS THE 2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX
Red Bull’s 15-race winning streak finally came to an end at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, with Carlos Sainz securing the second victory of his Formula 1 career. Sainz is the 77th driver to have taken multiple Grand Prix wins in World Championship history.
The 2023 Singapore Grand Prix marks Ferrari’s first win since Charles Leclerc was victorious at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix. This was Ferrari’s fourth win in Singapore – their first since 2019. It sees them equal Mercedes and Red Bull as the team to have won the Singapore Grand Prix on the most occasions.
Sainz took victory by 0.812 seconds, marking the third time that the Singapore Grand Prix has been won by under a second.
Sainz led every lap of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix – the first time he has led every lap of a race in his Formula 1 career. He is the 59th driver to have led every lap of a Grand Prix. Sainz made this the 100th Grand Prix in which a Spanish driver has led a lap.
Sainz recorded consecutive podium finishes for the first time since the 2022 Canadian and British Grands Prix.
Sainz was the only driver who finished the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix in the same position as he started. It was the first time that Sainz has finished a Singapore race in the same place as he started.
Four different drivers have won the last four runnings of the Singapore Grand Prix. It’s the first time that has happened in Marina Bay Circuit history.
Sainz has now made seven appearances at the Singapore Grand Prix without ever failing to finish, extending the record for most appearances at the track without a DNF.
ON THE 2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX PODIUM
Lando Norris recorded his third podium finish of the year with second place at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. It puts him one top three finish away from equalling his highest number of podiums in a single season. All three podium appearances this year have been second place finishes.
Norris recorded McLaren’s best Singapore Grand Prix result since Jenson Button finished as runner-up in 2012. He became the 15th different driver to have finished on the podium at the event, 15 years since it first joined the calendar.
Norris has gained two positions on all three of his Singapore Grand Prix appearances.
The 2023 Singapore Grand Prix was the first race which a Ferrari driver won with a McLaren driver finishing as runner-up since the 2012 German Grand Prix.
Finishing third in the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton returned to the podium for the first time since the British Grand Prix. This was his fifth podium finish of the season.
This was Mercedes’ first podium finish at the Singapore Grand Prix since Hamilton took victory in 2018.
Hamilton set the fastest lap of the race for the third time at the Singapore Grand Prix. He is the first driver to set the fastest lap on three occasions at Marina Bay Circuit. Mercedes overtake Red Bull as the team with the most fastest laps at the track.
On Lap 35 of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Hamilton overtook Sebastian Vettel as the driver to have completed the most Grand Prix laps at Marina Bay Circuit.
The 2023 Singapore Grand Prix marked the second time, after the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix, that Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes shared the podium positions in Formula 1.
IN THE POINTS
For the first time since 2009, neither Red Bull car finished in the top three at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Despite his win and podium streaks coming to an end, Max Verstappen’s fifth place finish in the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix ensured he set a new second-longest scoring streak in Formula 1 and equalled Daniel Ricciardo for the second-longest finishing streak.
The 2023 Singapore Grand Prix marks only the fourth time in the last 34 races that Verstappen has not finished on the podium.
Prior to the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Max Verstappen had never previously gained more than one position from where he had started at Marina Bay Circuit. He gained six positions in the 2023 race.
Fifth place matched the best result from 11th on the grid at the Singapore Grand Prix. Jenson Button also finished fifth having started 11th with Brawn GP in 2009.
Finishing sixth, Pierre Gasly finished in the top six for the second time this year. This is the second time in the last three races that he’s recorded a top six result. This was Gasly’s best Singapore Grand Prix result to date.
Oscar Piastri gained ten positions over the course of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix to finish seventh, scoring points for the fifth time in the last six race weekends.
This was the first top seven finish recorded from 17th on the grid at the Singapore Grand Prix.
This was the second consecutive Singapore Grand Prix in which both McLaren drivers scored points. The team has never previously had successive appearances at the track in which both of their cars scored points.
Sergio Perez finished eighth in the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix – the first time he’s finished outside of the top six since finishing 16th in Monaco.
Liam Lawson finished ninth in the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, scoring points for the first time in his Formula 1 career on his third attempt. He is the 173rd driver to score within his first three World Championship appearances and the first to pick up points for the first time on his third appearance since Nico Hulkenberg at the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix.
Lawson’s point ensured that the Red Bull junior team scored for the seventh time from their last eight Singapore Grand Prix appearances.
With tenth place at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Kevin Magnussen recorded Haas’ first Grand Prix point since he finished tenth at the Miami Grand Prix in May.
This was the first time Haas scored a point at the Singapore Grand Prix since Romain Grosjean finished ninth in 2017.
This was Magnussen’s fifth consecutive Singapore Grand Prix appearance in which he lost positions from where he started.
Magnussen has scored points on three occasions at the Singapore Grand Prix, all three of those being tenth place results.
THE OTHER FINISHERS
Finishing 11th, Alex Albon narrowly missed out on scoring points for a third consecutive race weekend.
Albon’s 11th place marked the best result for a Williams driver at the Singapore Grand Prix since Lance Stroll finished eighth in 2017.
With Albon 11th and team-mate Logan Sargeant 14th, this was the first time since 2018 that both Williams cars have reached the chequered flag in Singapore.
Having started from the pit lane, Zhou Guanyu finished 12th at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. Failing to score for an eighth consecutive race, Zhou equalled the longest point-less streak of his Formula 1 career.
On Lap 16 of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso became the first driver to have raced 100,000km in Grands Prix in Formula 1 history.
Finishing only 15th in the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Alonso failed to score for the first time in the 2023 season.
Losing eight places, this was the first time that Alonso has finished the Singapore Grand Prix in a worse position than where he started from any of his ten finishes at the track. It’s the first time he’s finished the Singapore Grand Prix in a position outside of the points.
Logan Sargeant’s scrape with the wall on Lap 20 of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix ensured that this was the 14th consecutive Marina Bay race in which the Safety Car made an appearance. There was a further VSC period later in the race when Esteban Ocon came to a stop at Turn 1.
THE RETIREES
Yuki Tsunoda retired on the opening lap of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. Having failed to start the last race at Monza, Tsunoda has failed to complete a full racing lap at either of the last two Grands Prix.
Tsunoda has retired from both of his Singapore Grand Prix appearances. He is the third driver – after Adrian Sutil and Mark Webber – to retire on both of his first two appearances at Marina Bay Circuit.
Valtteri Bottas recorded his first retirement of the 2023 season. This was the first time that the Alfa Romeo driver failed to finish since the 2022 United States Grand Prix.
Bottas’ retirement made this the third consecutive Singapore Grand Prix in which an Alfa Romeo driver has failed to finish. This was Bottas’ first retirement in Singapore since 2016.
On his 27th birthday, Esteban Ocon recorded his fourth DNF in the last six races. This was Ocon’s third consecutive retirement at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Crashing out on the final lap of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, George Russell recorded his third retirement of the season – his first since the Canadian Grand Prix.
Russell remains yet to score a point at the Singapore Grand Prix in his career. His 14th place in 2022 is the only time he has reached the chequered flag at Marina Bay Circuit so far.
Lance Stroll withdrew from the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix following his huge crash during qualifying. It made the event the first since the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix which Stroll did not start. It ended a streak of 64 consecutive starts for the Canadian driver. Stroll’s absence also made this the first race since the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at which no Canadian drivers took the start.
As a result of layout changes, the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix was won in a time of 1 hour, 46 minutes and 37.418 seconds, making it the shortest F1 race at Marina Bay Circuit on record by 4 minutes and 34.193 seconds.
