2024 British Grand Prix: Qualifying Statistics

Russell secures pole for his home race, Perez records his third Q1 exit in the last five races and Zhou out-qualifies his team-mate for the first time this season. Here are the facts and statistics from qualifying at the 2024 British Grand Prix.

RUSSELL ON POLE FOR THE 2024 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

George Russell secured pole position for the 2024 British Grand Prix, with a lap time 0.161 seconds faster than team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

This was Russell’s second pole position of the year, having last taken pole at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix.

Russell’s pole marked the first time he has qualified in the top five for a Formula 1 race at Silverstone.

This was the 16th time that a Mercedes-powered car has taken pole position for the British Grand Prix since it first appeared on the F1 calendar in 1950. That saw Mercedes equal Ferrari as the engine manufacturer with the most pole positions at the event.

IN THE TOP 10

With Lewis Hamilton qualifying in second place, Mercedes recorded their first front row lockout since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

This was the first time Mercedes locked-out the front row at Silverstone since the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020.

Lewis Hamilton qualified alongside his team-mate on the front row for the 2024 British Grand Prix. This was Hamilton’s first front row qualifying result since taking pole position at the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix.

With Lando Norris third, three British drivers qualified in the top three positions for the 2024 British Grand Prix. It was the first time this had occurred since the 1968 South African Grand Prix.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri both maintained their 100% Q3 appearance records at Silverstone, remaining in a group of five drivers who’ve never missed out on Q3 at the track. Norris maintained his record of out-qualifying his team-mate on every appearance at the track to date.

McLaren qualified with both cars in the top five at Silverstone for the second successive season. Prior to last year, 2014 was the last time both McLarens qualified in the top five at the British Grand Prix.

Nico Hulkenberg recorded his best qualifying result of the year so far with sixth place. The 2024 British Grand Prix marked his first top six qualifying result since qualifying on the front row at the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix.

Sixth place is Haas’ best-ever qualifying result at Silverstone, beating their previous best of seventh recorded by Kevin Magnussen at the 2018 British Grand Prix.

Hulkenberg’s Q3 appearance was the first for the Haas team at the British Grand Prix since 2018.

With Carlos Sainz qualifying seventh and Charles Leclerc 11th, this was the first F1 race at Silverstone since the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020 for which neither Ferrari driver qualified in the top six. It was the first British Grand Prix for which no Ferrari drivers qualified in the top six since 2014.

Lance Stroll qualified eighth for the 2024 British Grand Prix – his first top eight qualifying result since setting the third fastest time in Q3 at the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

This was Stroll’s first Q3 appearance at Silverstone since the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix – and his third top ten qualifying result here in total.

With both Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso qualifying in the top ten, this was the first time since the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix that both of the Silverstone-based team’s drivers reached Q3 at Silverstone.

Alex Albon reached Q3 for the third time in the last five races. Qualifying ninth for the 2024 British Grand Prix, he equalled his best qualifying result of the year. He also qualified ninth in Montreal.

Albon’s ninth place in qualifying for the 2024 British Grand Prix made this the fourth consecutive season in which a Williams driver has qualified in the top ten at Silverstone.

OUT IN Q2

Charles Leclerc qualified in 11th place, missing out on Q3 for the second time this year. He also qualified 11th for the Canadian Grand Prix.

This was the first time in his Formula 1 career that Leclerc has failed to progress to Q3 at Silverstone.

Leclerc’s Q2 exit marks only the sixth time that a Ferrari driver has failed to progress to Q3 since the knockout system was introduced in 2006.

Logan Sargeant qualified 12th for the 2024 British Grand Prix, recording his best qualifying result of the season to date. This was Sargeant’s second Q2 appearance of the year, after the Canadian Grand Prix.

For only the second time this season, Zhou Guanyu progressed to Q2. He recorded his best qualifying result of the season so far with 14th place and out-qualified team-mate Valtteri Bottas for the first time since the 2023 United States Grand Prix.

Daniel Ricciardo qualified 15th for the 2024 British Grand Prix – his worst qualifying result at Silverstone since qualifying 24th on debut at the track in 2011.

OUT IN Q1

For the third time in the last five races, Sergio Perez was eliminated in Q1 at the 2024 British Grand Prix. This was his first back row qualification since the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix.

2024 is the second consecutive season in which Perez has been eliminated in Q1 at the British Grand Prix.

Valtteri Bottas qualified 16th for the 2024 British Grand Prix, recording his first Q1 exit at the British Grand Prix since 2014.

Kevin Magnussen recorded his sixth Q1 exit at Silverstone, equalling Jenson Button as the driver with the most Q1 eliminations at the track. This was Magnussen’s sixth consecutive Q1 exit at the track, having been out in the first part of qualifying at the track on every appearance since 2019.

With both Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon out in Q1, Alpine recorded their first double Q1 elimination since the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. It was the team’s first-ever double Q1 exit at Silverstone.

This was the first time that neither of the Enstone based team’s cars qualified in the top 17 at Silverstone since 2001.

Esteban Ocon’s 18th place marks the first time that he has qualified outside of the top 15 at Silverstone, while Pierre Gasly’s 20th place marked the first time he has qualified outside of the top 14 at the track. For both drivers, it was their first Q1 exit here.

Ocon out-qualified his team-mate at Silverstone for the first time since 2018, while Gasly was out-qualified by a team-mate at the track for the first time since 2019.

Pierre Gasly qualified 20th for the 2024 British Grand Prix, setting the slowest qualifying lap time for the second time this year. He also qualified last for the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.
