2024 Chinese Grand Prix: Race Statistics, Facts and Trivia

In the first Chinese Grand Prix to feature no Mercedes or Ferrari drivers on the podium since 2011, Verstappen makes Shanghai the 26th track at which he has won and the Red Bull junior team record only their third double DNF in the last seven seasons. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix.

VERSTAPPEN WINS THE 2024 CHINESE GRAND PRIX

After winning Saturday’s Sprint race, Max Verstappen took victory in the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, securing the 58th win of his Formula 1 career.

Verstappen became the tenth different driver to win the Chinese Grand Prix and made Shanghai International Circuit the 26th different circuit at which he has won in Formula 1.

Verstappen’s Chinese Grand Prix victory leaves Marina Bay Street Circuit – host of the Singapore Grand Prix – as the only track on the current calendar at which he has never taken a victory.

Verstappen secured Red Bull’s third victory in China, after Sebastian Vettel’s 2009 victory and Daniel Ricciardo’s 2018 win.

The 2024 Chinese Grand Prix was Verstappen’s 31st victory from pole position, equalling Sebastian Vettel for third in the list of drivers who’ve won the most Grands Prix having started from the front of the grid.

As well as being Verstappen’s 57th victory, the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix also marked the 57th win for a Dutch driver in Formula 1. That saw the Netherlands overtake Finland as the nation to have won the fifth-most F1 races.

Verstappen made this the 12th time that a driver has led at least one lap in 12 consecutive Grands Prix. It equalled his own personal best for the most consecutive races in which a driver has led, having previously led 12 consecutive races between the 2023 Australian and Italian Grands Prix.

ON THE PODIUM

While Max Verstappen became the tenth driver to record multiple podiums at the Chinese Grand Prix, both Lando Norris and Sergio Perez recorded their first podium finishes at Shanghai International Circuit, making them the 17th and 18th drivers to finish in the top three at the venue.

Sergio Perez recorded the 39th podium finish of his career, while Lando Norris recorded the 15th of his, extending the record for most podiums without taking a victory.

Finishing as runner-up to Verstappen, Norris equalled his career best result with second place. This was the eighth time that Norris has finished as runner-up.

Norris’s second place was the best result for a McLaren driver since 2012, when Jenson Button finished as runner-up.

Norris’ podium finish saw Britain overtake Germany to become the outright record holder as the nation with the most podium finishes at the Chinese Grand Prix. This was the 14th podium for a British driver in Shanghai.

This was Sergio Perez’s first top seven finish at the Chinese Grand Prix, while Norris crossed the finish line at the track for the first time in his career.

Red Bull recorded their first double podium finish at the Chinese Grand Prix since 2011. This was the team’s best combined result in Shanghai since recording their maiden victory and 1-2 finish at the 2009 Chinese Grand Prix.

IN THE POINTS

Finishing fourth in the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc continued his record of being the only driver to finish in the top four at every Grand Prix so far in 2024.

With fifth place, Carlos Sainz recorded his worst Grand Prix result of the year to date. However, it was his best-ever Chinese Grand Prix result, having never previously finished in the top six at the track.

This was the first Chinese Grand Prix since 2012 in which neither Ferrari driver finished on the podium.

With seventh place in the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso scored points for an eighth consecutive race.

Setting the fastest lap of the race, Alonso became only the second driver – after Lewis Hamilton – to set the fastest lap of a race at Shanghai International Circuit on multiple occasions.

The points scored by Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso in the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix saw Spain overtake Brazil as the nation that has scored the fifth most points in Formula 1 history.

Seventh place marked the best result for the Silverstone-based team at the Chinese Grand Prix since 2014, when Nico Hulkenberg finished sixth.

Oscar Piastri finished eighth for the third time this season. Fourth is the only other position in which he has finished so far this year.

Finishing ninth, Lewis Hamilton became the first driver to score points on 13 occasions at the Chinese Grand Prix, moving clear of Sebastian Vettel at the top of the list. Along with Hamilton, Fernando Alonso also equalled Vettel’s record of finishing in the top ten 13 times at the track.

With George Russell sixth and Hamilton ninth, this was the first time since 2011 that neither Mercedes driver finished on the podium at the Chinese Grand Prix, as well as the first time since 2008 that the Brackley-based team failed to record a top five finish in Shanghai.

Hamilton became the first driver to score a point from 18th on the grid at the Chinese Grand Prix since 2011, when Mark Webber drove from 18th on the grid to a podium finish. Hamilton was the only driver starting outside of the top nine to score a point in the race.

This is the third time Hamilton has finished ninth in the last three Grands Prix which he has completed.

This was Hamilton’s worst Chinese Grand Prix result since retiring from the 2007 race.

Nico Hulkenberg finished tenth in the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix. This was his 208th race appearance without a victory, equalling Andrea de Cesaris at the top of the list of drivers who’ve started the most races without ever winning.

This was the third time in the last four Grands Prix that Hulkenberg has scored a point.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

Esteban Ocon recorded his and the Alpine team’s best result so far this season with 11th place. Team-mate Pierre Gasly finished 13th.

Ocon also finished 11th in the 2019 Chinese Grand Prix. He was the only driver to record the same result at the track in 2024 as he did in 2019.

With 12th place, Alex Albon recorded the best result for a Williams driver at the Chinese Grand Prix since both of the team’s cars finished in the top ten in 2016.

On the day that he became the first Chinese driver to compete in the Chinese Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu finished in 14th place – his second-best finish of the season so far.

With 15th place in the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, Lance Stroll made this his fourth appearance at the track without ever scoring a point.

Kevin Magnussen finished 16th in the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix – his worst result of the season to date.

Valtteri Bottas was the first driver to retire from the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix. From his eight appearances at Shanghai International Circuit, this was the first time that Bottas failed to reach the chequered flag.

Both RB drivers retired from the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix as a result of collision damage. The Red Bull junior team recorded their first ever double DNF at the Chinese Grand Prix, as well as their first double DNF under their RB guise. This was the team’s first double non-finish since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix.

The 2024 Chinese Grand Prix marked the first time in his career that Daniel Ricciardo failed to reach the chequered flag at Shanghai International Circuit.

This is the first time since the 2019 Australian and Bahrain Grands Prix that Ricciardo has recorded retirements at consecutive Grands Prix.

This was Tsunoda’s first retirement since the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix.
