Norris secures his fourth pole, Verstappen fails to take pole at home for the first time and Albon records his best qualifying result of the season – only to be later disqualified. Here are the facts and statistics from qualifying at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix.
NORRIS ON POLE AT 2024 DUTCH GRAND PRIX
Lando Norris secured pole position for the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix, taking the fourth pole of his Formula 1 career.
Norris secured McLaren’s second pole position at the Dutch Grand Prix – the team’s first at the track since Alain Prost secured pole here in 1984.
This was Norris’ third pole position in the last six races, having taken one pole in his prior 113 appearances.
Norris took pole by 0.356 seconds – the third largest pole margin of the 2024 season to date, behind Verstappen’s margins at the Austrian and Belgian Grands Prix.
IN THE TOP 10
Max Verstappen failed to take pole position at his home Grand Prix for the first time since Zandvoort returned to the Formula 1 calendar. The Dutchman qualified second, recording his fourth front row start at the track. He equalled Graham Hill and Rene Arnoux as the driver who has made the most front row starts at the Dutch Grand Prix.
With Sergio Perez qualifying fifth, this is only the second time – after 2022 – that both Red Bull drivers have qualified in the top five at the Dutch Grand Prix.
This is the first time since the Chinese and Miami Grands Prix that Perez has qualified in the top five at successive races.
With Valtteri Bottas out-qualifying his team-mate at Zandvoort for the first time, Perez is now the only driver to make appearances at the last four Dutch Grands Prix and not out-qualify his team-mate on any occasion.
For the third time in the last four races, both Aston Martin drivers progressed to Q3 at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix. This was the team’s first double Q3 appearance at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Lance Stroll qualified ninth for the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix – his best qualifying result at Zandvoort to date.
Alex Albon recorded Williams’ best qualifying result of the season to date with eighth place. This was the fourth time that the team has appeared in Q3 this year – with every occasion being thanks to Albon.
After the session, Albon was disqualified from the result, meaning he will start alongside his team-mate at the back of the grid.
Qualifying tenth for the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly recorded Alpine’s first Q3 appearance at Zandvoort since 2021, when both drivers qualified in the top ten.
This was Gasly’s first Q3 appearance since the Spanish Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri all maintained their 100% Q3 appearance rates at the Dutch Grand Prix. Verstappen and Leclerc became the first drivers to reach Q3 here on four occasions.
OUT IN Q2
For only the second race in which he has competed this year, Carlos Sainz failed to qualify in the top ten at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix. He was also eliminated in Q2 at the Canadian Grand Prix.
With Sainz qualifying 11th, Ferrari’s 100% Q3 appearance record at the Dutch Grand Prix came to an end. All ten teams have now seen at least one of their cars out in Q2 or Q1 at Zandvoort.
Lewis Hamilton failed to reach Q3 for the third time this season. He was out in Q2 at the Australian Grand Prix and was eliminated in Q1 at the Chinese Grand Prix.
This was the second year in succession in which Hamilton failed to reach Q3 at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Both Kevin Magnussen (15th) and Nico Hulkenberg (14th) recorded their best qualifying results to date at Zandvoort. Magnussen had qualified 18th in the last two seasons, while Hulkenberg qualified 15th last year.
OUT IN Q1
Daniel Ricciardo qualified 16th for the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix, recording his first Q1 exit since the Spanish Grand Prix.
With 17th place, Esteban Ocon equalled Alpine’s worst qualifying result to date at the Dutch Grand Prix. He also qualified 17th with the team here last year.
This was the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix that Ocon was out-qualified by his team-mate.
Qualifying 18th, Valtteri Bottas became the first driver to record as many as three Q1 exits at the Dutch Grand Prix. This was the Finn’s third consecutive Q1 elimination at Zandvoort.
With both Bottas and Zhou Guanyu out in Q1, Sauber recorded a double Q1 exit at the Dutch Grand Prix for the second consecutive season. This was the team’s eighth double Q1 elimination of the 2024 season – their first since the Austrian Grand Prix.
Zhou was eliminated in Q1 for a third successive race weekend.
Having reached Q3 at Zandvoort in 2023, Logan Sargeant failed to take part in qualifying for the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix. A crash in Free Practice 3 left him unable to set a competitive lap time.
Sargeant is only the second Williams driver to be eliminated in Q1 at the Dutch Grand Prix, after Nicholas Latifi in 2022.
