2024 Hungarian Grand Prix: Qualifying Statistics

Norris takes the third pole of his career, McLaren lock out the front row for the first time in almost 12 years and Perez exits in Q1 for the fourth time in six races. Here are the facts and statistics from qualifying at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix.

NORRIS ON POLE AT THE 2024 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Lando Norris secured pole position for the third time in his career at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Norris secured pole by 0.022 seconds – the third smallest pole margin in Hungarian Grand Prix history. This was the third successive year in which pole at the Hungaroring has been decided by less than half a tenth of a second.

This was McLaren’s ninth pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix. That saw them equal Mercedes as the constructor with the most poles at the Hungaroring.

Norris recorded McLaren’s first pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix since Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in Q3 in 2012.

This was the 13th pole position for a British driver at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Britain moves clear of Germany at the top of the list of nations with the most pole positions at the Hungaroring.

Norris continued his record of out-qualifying his team-mate on all six Hungaroring appearances to date.

IN THE TOP 10

Oscar Piastri set the second fastest time in Q3 at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, securing McLaren’s first front row lock out since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.

This was the fourth time – after 1998, 2007 and 2008 – that McLaren set the two fastest qualifying times at the Hungarian Grand Prix. It is their third front row lock-out at the circuit, after 1998 and 2008.

Piastri equalled his best qualifying result of the year to date, having also qualified second at the Emilia Romagna and Monaco Grands Prix.

Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen all maintained their 100% Q3 appearance records at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

With Lewis Hamilton fifth and George Russell exiting in Q1, this was the first time since 2012 that neither Mercedes driver qualified in the top three at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso qualified in the top ten at the Hungarian Grand Prix for a 17th time, each extending their shared record for the most top ten qualifying results at the Hungaroring.

Lance Stroll qualified eighth for a second race weekend in a row, equalling his best qualifying result of 2024 so far.

With both Stroll and Alonso in Q3, Aston Martin recorded their first consecutive double Q3 appearances since the Saudi Arabian and Australian Grands Prix.

This was only the second time – after 2020 – that Stroll reached Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Both Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo reached Q3 at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. This was the first time since 2018 that both of the Red Bull junior team’s drivers reached Q3 at the Hungaroring.

This was Tsunoda’s first Q3 appearance at the Hungarian Grand Prix, having never previously qualified in the top 15, nor made it out of Q1, at the track.

OUT IN Q2

Valtteri Bottas qualified 12th for the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. This was the first time since his maiden season in 2013 that Bottas failed to reach Q3 at the track.

Although 2016 remains the last time that a Williams driver reached Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, this was the first time since 2020 that both Williams drivers progressed to Q2 at the track.

With Alex Albon 13th and Logan Sargeant 14th, this was the first time since 2015 that both Williams drivers qualified in the top 14 at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

This was Williams’ first double Q2 exit since the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

OUT IN Q1

For the fourth time in the last six races, Sergio Perez was eliminated in Q1 at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. This was the second successive race weekend in which Perez has crashed out in the opening stage of qualifying.

Perez’s crash saw Red Bull record their first-ever Q1 exit at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The team’s previous worst qualifying result at the Hungaroring was 14th, recorded by Christian Klien in 2006.

This was Perez’s third Q1 exit at the Hungarian Grand Prix – his first since 2019.

This was the tenth time in the last eleven seasons that Perez has been out-qualified by his team-mate at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

For the second year in a row, George Russell was eliminated in Q1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. This was the first time Russell failed to qualify in the top ten since last year’s Hungary race, ending a streak of 23 Q3 appearances.

This was Russell’s fourth Q1 exit at the Hungarian Grand Prix, seeing him equal Marcus Ericsson and Kevin Magnussen as the driver with the most Q1 eliminations at the Hungaroring.

Russell’s 2022 pole position remains the only time he has qualified in the top 11 at the Hungarian Grand Prix from six qualifying attempts.

For the second race in a row, both Alpine drivers were eliminated in Q1. This was the first time since the first two races of the year that both Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon were out in Q1 at two races in a row. Both drivers equalled their worst qualifying result of the season to date.

This was the first time since the Bahrain Grand Prix that Alpine locked-out the back row of the grid. It was the team’s first double Q1 exit at the Hungarian Grand Prix since 2016.

Gasly set the slowest time in qualifying for the second race weekend in a row.
