Piastri takes his maiden victory and becomes the seventh different winner of the year, Hamilton records his 200th podium finish and McLaren record their first 1-2 in Hungary since 1999. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix.
MAIDEN WIN FOR OSCAR PIASTRI AT THE 2024 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX
Oscar Piastri became Formula 1’s 115th winner at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. He is the 75th of F1’s 115 winners to win within his first 35 Grand Prix starts.
Piastri became the fifth Australian driver – after Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo – to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Piastri became the sixth driver – after Damon Hill, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Heikki Kovalainen and Esteban Ocon – to take their maiden Grand Prix victory at the Hungaroring.
Piastri is the first driver born in the 21st century to win a Grand Prix. Luigi Fagioli was the first driver born in the 19th century to win a Grand Prix, at the 1951 French Grand Prix, while Giuseppe Farina was the first driver born in the 20th century to win a Grand Prix, at the 1950 British Grand Prix.
Piastri’s win means that there have now been seven different Grand Prix winners in the 2024 season. This is the 16th F1 season in total to have had seven or more winners. It is the first time it has happened since 2012.
Piastri was voted Driver Of The Day for the third time in his career, after the 2023 Japanese and Qatar Grands Prix.
With Lando Norris having started from pole position, this was the first race weekend at which McLaren took pole position and won the race since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.
This was McLaren’s first Hungarian Grand Prix win since 2012 and their 12th victory in total at the Hungaroring.
Piastri’s win means that he continues his 100% points-scoring rate at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He is one of only three drivers to have scored on every appearance at the Hungaroring. The others – Antonio Pizzonia and Johnny Dumfries – only raced one time each at the track.
Four different drivers led a lap of the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. This was the first time that consecutive Grands Prix have had four or more different leaders since the 2021 Italian and Russian Grands Prix.
ON THE PODIUM
Lando Norris finished as runner-up to his team-mate at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, meaning McLaren recorded their first 1-2 finish since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix.
This was McLaren’s third 1-2 finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, after 1988 and 1999.
Norris became the seventh Hungarian Grand Prix polesitter to fail to win the race in the last 11 seasons.
This was the fifth consecutive Grand Prix in 2024 that the polesitter failed to win. It’s the first time that the polesitter has failed to win five races in a row since the polesitter failed to win all six races between the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix and the 2010 Chinese Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton finished in third place, becoming the first driver in Formula 1 history to record 200 podium finishes.
This is the tenth time in the last 13 seasons that Hamilton has finished on the podium at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Hamilton became the first driver to score points on 17 occasions at the Hungarian Grand Prix, moving clear of Fernando Alonso at the top of the list.
Hamilton recorded consecutive podium finishes for the first time since the 2023 Canadian and Spanish Grands Prix.
This was the first time since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix that all three cars on the podium were powered by a single engine manufacturer. It was the 17th time in Formula 1 that Mercedes engines have locked-out the podium positions.
This was the sixth podium in F1 history to feature an Australian and two British drivers in the top three. It was the first time it has occurred since the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix, when Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Mark Webber were the top three.
IN THE POINTS
Finishing fourth in the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc recorded his first top four result since his victory at the Monaco Grand Prix.
This was the first time since the Chinese Grand Prix that Leclerc finished the race in a better position than where he started. It’s the first time in his career that he has finished the Hungarian Grand Prix in a better place than where he started.
Leclerc equalled his best result to date at the Hungarian Grand Prix, having last finished fourth here in 2019.
With Max Verstappen finishing fifth and Sergio Perez finishing seventh, the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix was the 56th consecutive Grand Prix weekend at which Red Bull scored a point. It is now the fifth longest points scoring streak for a team in Formula 1 history.
Sergio Perez’s run without a top six finish continues. It has now been eight races since he last finished in the top six, at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix.
Perez gained nine positions in the race – tying with George Russell for the most places gained on Sunday afternoon. They were the only drivers to gain more than two positions from where they started.
Yuki Tsunoda finished ninth in the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, scoring points for a second consecutive race weekend.
This was the first time since finishing sixth in 2021 that Tsunoda scored points at the Hungarian Grand Prix. 2021 was also the last time that the Red Bull junior team scored a point in Hungary.
Coming home in tenth place at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, Lance Stroll scored points at consecutive races for the first time this year.
Stroll also finished tenth in last year’s Hungarian Grand Prix. This was his third points-scoring appearance in total at the Hungaroring.
THE OTHER FINISHERS
Finishing 11th, Fernando Alonso became the first driver to record 18 Grand Prix finishes in Hungary.
This was the first time since 2009 that Alonso failed to score a point in a Hungarian Grand Prix which he has started.
Daniel Ricciardo finished 12th, making this his fourth consecutive point-less appearance at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
With Nico Hulkenberg 13th and Kevin Magnussen 15th, Haas failed to score a point at the Hungarian Grand Prix for the fourth season in a row.
Magnussen continued his 100% finish rate at the Hungaroring with his 15th place finish at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. He is only the second driver – after Ralf Schumacher – to make as many as nine appearances at the track without recording a retirement.
Esteban Ocon finished 18th in the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. It is the lowest position in which he has finished a race since finishing 21st at the 2016 Mexican Grand Prix.
With 19th place in the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu recorded his worst result to date in Formula 1.
THE RETIREE
Pierre Gasly was the only driver who failed to finish the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. This was the second consecutive race which he failed to finish, having failed to even start the British Grand Prix.
This was the second season in a row in which Gasly has retired from the Hungarian Grand Prix.
