2024 Italian Grand Prix: Qualifying Statistics

Norris becomes the first McLaren driver in 12 years to take back-to-back poles, Verstappen records his worst qualifying result in a year and a Haas driver reaches Q3 at Monza for the first time since 2018. Here are the facts and statistics from qualifying at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix.

NORRIS ON POLE AT THE 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Lando Norris secured the fifth pole position of his Formula 1 career at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. Norris is the 53rd driver to record as many as five pole positions in Formula 1.

This was the first time Norris qualified in the top three at Monza.

Having also taken pole at Zandvoort seven days ago, Norris took pole positions at consecutive races for the first time in his career. He is the first McLaren driver to qualify on pole position at successive races since Lewis Hamilton at the 2012 Singapore and Italian Grands Prix.

McLaren recorded their 160th pole position. They became the second team to reach that milestone, after Ferrari. Ferrari did so over 21 years ago at the 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix.

IN THE TOP 10

Oscar Piastri qualified on the front row for the fourth time in 2024, equalling his best qualifying result of the season to date.

With Norris on pole and Piastri second, McLaren recorded their first front row lock-out at the Italian Grand Prix since 2012, as well as the team’s second front row lock-out of the season.

George Russell set the third fastest time in Q3, recording his best qualifying result since taking pole position at the British Grand Prix. This was Russell’s best qualifying result to date at Monza.

Lewis Hamilton qualified in the top ten at Monza for the 16th time, equalling Michael Schumacher as the driver who has qualified in the top ten on the most occasions at the Italian Grand Prix.

With both Russell and Hamilton reaching Q3 at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, the Brackley-based team reached 600 Q3 appearances (across their Honda, Brawn GP and Mercedes guises) since the knockout qualifying system was introduced in 2006.

Max Verstappen qualified seventh for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. It marks his worst qualifying result since failing to reach Q3 at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. This was his worst qualifying result at Monza since 2019.

Alex Albon reached Q3 for the fifth time in the 2024 season, qualifying ninth for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. This was Albon’s fourth Q3 appearance in four outings at Monza.

Both Alex Albon and Oscar Piastri maintained their 100% Q3 appearance records at the Italian Grand Prix. Sebastien Bourdais is the only other driver to have reached Q3 on every appearance at Monza.

Nico Hulkenberg reached Q3 at the Italian Grand Prix for the first time since 2019.

This was only the third Q3 appearance for a Haas driver at the Italian Grand Prix – the first since Romain Grosjean qualified sixth in 2018.

OUT IN Q2

Fernando Alonso qualified 11th for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. He recorded his fifth Q1 exit at Monza, equalling Daniil Kvyat as the driver with the most Q2 eliminations at the track.

This is only the second time since 2014 that neither of the Silverstone-based team’s drivers have qualified in the top ten at the Italian Grand Prix.

Qualifying 12th, Daniel Ricciardo missed out on Q1 at the Italian grand Prix for the first time since 2018.

This was the first time since the Austrian Grand Prix that Alonso failed to qualify in the top ten.

Esteban Ocon qualified 15th for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, failing to reach Q3 at Monza for the fifth season in a row. It was also the fifth year in a row that he has failed to out-qualify his team-mate at the track.

OUT IN Q1

Yuki Tsunoda qualified in 16th place, missing out on a place in Q2. He remains yet to reach Q3 at the Italian Grand Prix, with this being his first Q1 exit at Monza since his maiden season in 2013.

For the third year in succession, Lance Stroll was eliminated in Q1 at the Italian Grand Prix. This was his and his team’s first Q1 exit since the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix. 17th equals Stroll’s worst qualifying result of the year.

Making his Formula 1 debut, Franco Colapinto qualified 18th with Williams at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix.

For the second race weekend in a row, the two Sauber drivers set the two slowest lap times during the qualifying hour.

This was the Sauber team’s first double Q1 exit at Monza since 2018.

Valtteri Bottas was eliminated in Q1 at Monza for the first time since his first F1 appearance at the track in 2013. 19th is his worst qualifying result to date at the track and equals his worst qualifying result of the season to date. He also qualified 19th at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The 2024 Italian Grand Prix is the third race in a row at which Zhou Guanyu has set the slowest lap time in qualifying.
