2024 Italian Grand Prix: Race Statistics, Facts and Trivia

In the third fastest Formula 1 race in history, Monza becomes the first track at which Leclerc has won twice and Sainz records the best result for a driver on their birthday in 20 years. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2024 Italian Grand Prix.

LECLERC WINS 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Five years to the day since his first Formula 1 victory, Charles Leclerc secured the seventh win of his career at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. Leclerc is the 42nd driver to secure as many as seven Grand Prix victories in his career.

Monza is the first track at which Leclerc has taken multiple Formula 1 victories, having last won here in 2019. Leclerc is the 21st driver to have taken more than one win at Monza.

Having won the Monaco Grand Prix, Leclerc became the fourth driver – after Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris – to secure multiple victories in 2024.

This was Ferrari’s 20th victory at Monza. They are the first team to secure as many as 20 wins at a single circuit.

Leclerc is the first driver to win at Monza having started fourth on the grid since Rubens Barrichello in 2002. This is the fourth time in the last seven years that a driver who did not start on the front row has won at Monza.

The 2024 Italian Grand Prix was won in a time of one hour, 14 minutes and 40.727 seconds, making it the 12th shortest Formula 1 race in history – and the third shortest to reach full distance, after the 2003 and 2005 Italian Grands Prix. It is also the third fastest F1 race in history – won at an average speed of 246.431km/h.

This was Leclerc’s third podium in a row. He has had two streaks of three consecutive podiums so far in 2024, each being two third places followed by a win.

ON THE PODIUM

McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris joined race winner Charles Leclerc on the 2024 Italian Grand Prix podium.

This is only the fourth time in McLaren’s history that the team has finished on the podium at 12 races in a row. This is the first time they have done so since scoring podiums at 13 races in a row between the 2011 German Grand Prix and the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix

Piastri finished in the top two for the third time in the last four races. This was his sixth consecutive top four result.

Having finished 12th last year, this was the first time that Piastri scored points at the Italian Grand Prix.

Norris finished on the podium for the ninth time in the last 12 races.

For the second consecutive race, Norris set the fastest lap of the race. Norris’ fastest lap was 0.386 seconds away from the Lap Record at Monza, set by Rubens Barrichello in the 2004 Italian Grand Prix.

Norris was the first McLaren driver to finish third at the Italian Grand Prix since Mika Hakkinen in 1996.

Norris maintained his record of having never led at the end of the first lap any time he has taken pole position.

This was the fifth consecutive season in which the polesitter did not win the Italian Grand Prix.

IN THE POINTS

Carlos Sainz raced in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix on his 30th birthday, finishing fourth. It’s the best result that a driver has recorded on their birthday since Rubens Barrichello finished on the podium on his 32nd birthday at the 2004 Monaco Grand Prix.

Sainz’s fourth place was his best result since his last podium, at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix.

This is the third year in a row in which a Ferrari driver has finished fourth at the Italian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton finished fifth in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. In the closing stages of the race, he became the second driver – after Fernando Alonso – to have raced 100,000km of Grand Prix laps in his Formula 1 career.

Hamilton finished fifth in the Italian Grand Prix for the third consecutive season.

With sixth place, Max Verstappen recorded his first result outside of the top five positions since the Monaco Grand Prix, where he also finished sixth.

George Russell finished seventh for a second consecutive race. He is yet to finish in the top six since his victory at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix.

Finishing eighth in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, Sergio Perez finished outside of the top five for a tenth consecutive race.

Hamilton scored points at Monza for the 15th time, making him the first driver to do so. He also equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of 15 top ten finishes at the track.

Finishing ninth in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, Alex Albon scored points for the third time this year. Albon has finished ninth on all three of his points-scoring appearances this year, having also finished ninth at the Monaco and British Grands Prix.

This was Albon’s third points finish from his four appearances at the Italian Grand Prix.

2024 is the fourth consecutive season in which Williams have scored a point at the Italian Grand Prix.

With tenth place, Kevin Magnussen scored a point for the first time since the Austrian Grand Prix. This was his third points-scoring appearance of the 2024 season.

Magnussen’s tenth place marks the first time that Haas have ever scored a point at the Italian Grand Prix. Their previous best result here is 11th, last recorded in 2017.

This was Magnussen’s second points-scoring race at Monza – and his first at the track in ten years. He also finished tenth in the 2014 Italian Grand Prix.

Magnussen received two penalty points for a collision with Pierre Gasly, putting him on 12 penalty points over the last 12 months – resulting in an automatic race ban. Magnussen is the first driver to be banned under the current penalty points system and is the first driver to be banned from a Grand Prix since Romain Grosjean was banned from the 2012 Italian Grand Prix.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

On debut, Franco Colapinto was the only driver to make up more than three positions in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. He gained six places to finish 12th. The result saw him overtake Valtteri Bottas in the Drivers’ Championship.

With Esteban Ocon 14th and Pierre Gasly 15th, Alpine failed to score at the Italian Grand Prix for the third year in a row.

Neither Sauber driver scored in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, meaning that the team’s points total remains at zero this season. However, both Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu gained positions in the race – the first time that both of the team’s drivers have done so in a single race since the Austrian Grand Prix.

Lance Stroll finished 19th for the first time in his career. He has now recorded at least one finish in every position between 3rd and 20th during his F1 career.

THE RETIREES

Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver who failed to finish the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. This was his second retirement of the year, having last retired at the Chinese Grand Prix.

Tsunoda’s 14th place in the 2022 Italian Grand Prix remains the only time that he has crossed the finish line in his four appearances at Monza. His other two visits to the track resulted in Did Not Starts.
