2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix: Race Statistics, Facts and Trivia

Verstappen becomes F1’s sixth 4-time World Champion, Russell leads home Mercedes’ 60th 1-2 finish and Red Bull record the second-longest scoring streak in F1 history. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix!

RUSSELL WINS THE 2024 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

George Russell took victory in the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, recording the third victory of his Formula 1 career.

Russell’s victory makes 2024 the first Formula 1 season in history in which as many as seven different drivers have won multiple Grands Prix.

Lewis Hamilton finished as runner-up in the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, ensuring Mercedes recorded their first 1-2 finish in two years, since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. In total, this was the team’s 60th 1-2 result. They became the second team to record 60 1-2 finishes, with Ferrari having reached the milestone 22 years previously at the 2002 United States Grand Prix.

Mercedes are the fourth team to finish a Grand Prix in first and second in 2024, making this season the first to feature four different teams recording 1-2 results.

This was Mercedes’ first victory in the United States since Hamilton’s win at the 2019 United States Grand Prix.

Russell’s Las Vegas Grand Prix win means that there have been six different winners in the last six races. It’s the first time that there has been a streak of six different winners since the six races between the 2012 Chinese and European Grands Prix.

VERSTAPPEN CROWNED WORLD CHAMPION

Finishing fifth in the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, Max Verstappen was crowned World Champion for the fourth successive season. Verstappen became Formula 1’s sixth 4-time World Champion and became only the second driver, after Sebastian Vettel, to win all of his first four titles in consecutive years.

Verstappen won the championship on a Saturday for the second year in succession and became the eighth driver to win the title in the United States.

Of F1’s four visits to Las Vegas, this was the third time that the title has been decided in the city. All three drivers who have won the title in Vegas – Nelson Piquet in 1981, Keke Rosberg in 1982 and Max Verstappen in 2024 – have done so by finishing in fifth place.

ON THE PODIUM

With his second place finish, Lewis Hamilton extended the record for most circuits with a podium finish to 36. Of the 38 circuits he’s raced at in F1, Buddh International Circuit and Miami International Autodrome are the only ones at which he has never finished in the top three.

This was Hamilton’s first podium result since his victory at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix. He also finished second on the road to his team-mate then, before Russell was disqualified.

Hamilton gained eight positions during the race – the most of any driver.

Hamilton’s drive from tenth to second saw him awarded Driver of The Day for the 17th time in his career. Hamilton won with almost a third of the vote.

With George Russell and Lewis Hamilton leading every lap of the race between them, this was the 100th Grand Prix which was led from start to end by British drivers.

Carlos Sainz finished third in the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, recording the 26th podium finish of his career, tying the career totals of Ronnie Peterson and Eddie Irvine.

This was Sainz’s third podium finish in the last four races, each one having been on a different step of the podium.

IN THE POINTS

Charles Leclerc finished fourth in the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, recording a tenth consecutive top five result.

Finishing sixth, Lando Norris made the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix the 100th race weekend at which he scored a point. He has achieved the feat in 121 appearances. Norris is the 21st driver to have scored points at as many as 100 Grand Prix weekends.

Oscar Piastri continued a 16-race scoring streak, finishing in seventh place.

Nico Hulkenberg scored points for the fourth time in the last five races, finishing eighth in the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix. This was his fourth top eight Grand Prix result of the season. This was the first time a Haas driver scored points in Las Vegas.

Finishing ninth, Yuki Tsunoda scored points for a second consecutive race weekend. This is the first time he has scored points at successive races since the British and Hungarian Grands Prix.

With tenth place, Sergio Perez scored a point in a Grand Prix for the first time since the United States Grand Prix. The Miami Grand Prix in May remains Perez’s last top five finish.

With Max Verstappen fifth and Sergio Perez tenth, the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix was Red Bull’s 65th consecutive points-scoring race. They overtook McLaren for the second-longest scoring streak in Formula 1 history, having scored in every race since the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull are the only teams who’ve seen both drivers finish in the points in both the 2023 and 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Ferrari are the only team to finish in the top six with both cars in both races.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

Finishing 11th, Fernando Alonso failed to score a point for the fourth consecutive Grand Prix. It’s his longest point-less streak since failing to score at all four races between the 2022 Saudi Arabian and Miami Grands Prix.

With 13th place, Zhou Guanyu equalled his best result in the last 21 races. He also finished 13th at the Spanish Grand Prix. 11th in Bahrain is his only better finishing position so far this year.

Franco Colapinto finished 14th in the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix – his worst result of the six races in which he has reached the chequered flag.

Williams and Sauber are the only teams who’ve failed to score any points in both the 2023 and 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

THE RETIREES

Pierre Gasly failed to finish the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, recording his first retirement since the Hungarian Grand Prix.

For the fourth time in the last five races, Alex Albon recorded a non-finish at the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Albon is the first Williams driver to record non-finishes at three Grands Prix in a row since Lance Stroll in the first three races of the 2017 season.
