2024 Mexico City Grand Prix: Milestones and F1 Records Which Could Be Broken

As Alonso reaches 400 F1 appearances, Norris could qualify in the top ten for the 100th time and Ferrari could reach 16,000 laps led. Here are the milestones and the records which could be broken at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix!

THE 2024 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX MILESTONES

The 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix will be the 1,121st World Championship event in Formula 1 history.

This will be the 25th Mexican Grand Prix* since the event was first held in 1962. This will be the 24th time that Formula 1 has raced in Mexico. It will be the 24th World Championship Grand Prix held at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and the fourth time the race has been given the official title of ‘Mexico City Grand Prix’. *includes races staged under the Mexico City Grand Prix title.

The 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix marks the 400th race weekend which Fernando Alonso has competed in. As a result of his DNSs at the 2005 United States Grand Prix and the 2017 Russian Grand Prix, it will be his 398th start.

Pierre Gasly makes his 150th Grand Prix start at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix.

This weekend, Carlos Sainz, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas become the first drivers to make nine appearances at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, moving clear of Pedro Rodriguez, Jack Brabham and Jo Siffert at the top of the list of most F1 appearances in Mexico.

The 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix is the fourth Formula 1 race to take place on October 27. The 2013 Indian Grand Prix is the only previous race on this date which did not take place in Mexico. The 1963 and 2019 Mexican Grands Prix were held on this day.

THE FORMULA 1 RECORDS WHICH COULD BE BROKEN

A win for Max Verstappen at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix would make this only the 12th occasion on which a driver has taken four successive wins at a single circuit in Formula 1.

A victory for Max Verstappen at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix would make Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez the first circuit at which he has recorded six wins in his Formula 1 career.

A win for Max Verstappen would make Mexico the second country – after the United States – in which he has taken as many as six F1 wins.

Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is the third of four venues on the 2024 calendar at which Fernando Alonso has never previously taken a podium finish. A top three result for Alonso in the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix would make the track the 31st different circuit at which he has finished on the podium in Formula 1. That would see him surpass Kimi Raikkonen and equal Max Verstappen for second on the list of most circuits at which a driver has taken a podium finish.

If Charles Leclerc wins one more race in the 2024 season, 2024 will become the season in which he has won the most Grands Prix. Leclerc matched his record for most wins in a year at the 2024 United States Grand Prix, taking his third victory of the season. He also won three races in 2022.

A podium finish for Charles Leclerc this weekend would make car number 16 the 12th to have recorded 100 podium finishes in Formula 1. Of the 99 podiums recorded to date by car 16, Leclerc has recorded 40.

If Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz lead 61 laps of the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix between them, Ferrari will become the first team to have led 16,000 Grand Prix laps in Formula 1.

A Q3 appearance for Lando Norris will mark the 100th time that he has qualified in the top ten for a Grand Prix. He would be the 16th driver to record 100 Q3 appearances since the knockout system was introduced in 2006.

If Kevin Magnussen scores a point this weekend, it will be the 50th Grand Prix weekend at which Magnussen has scored. He would be the 53rd driver to score at 50 rounds.

Ferrari sit just six points behind Red Bull in the championship standings. If Red Bull slip to third in the Constructors’ Championship, it would be the first time that the team has been outside of the top two in the standings since the 2022 Australian Grand Prix.

If Lewis Hamilton reaches the 10th lap of the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix, he will become the second driver, after Fernando Alonso, to have raced 20,000 Grand Prix laps in his Formula 1 career.

If any British driver leads the race from start to finish, this will become the 100th Grand Prix led from start to end by a British driver.

If Max Verstappen or Sergio Perez score a point over the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, this would be Red Bull’s 64th consecutive points-scoring race. That would see them equal McLaren for the second-longest scoring streak for a team in Formula 1.

A 1-2 finish for McLaren would mark the 50th 1-2 result in the team’s history. They would be only the third team – after Ferrari and Mercedes – to record 50 1-2 finishes.

If Max Verstappen leads every lap of the race, he will overtake Jim Clark for fourth in the list of most races led from start to end. It would be the 14th time he has done so in his career.

If Max Verstappen does not take pole position but does win the Grand Prix, he would become the fourth driver – after Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Alain Prost – to have won 30 Grands Prix without starting from the front of the grid.

At the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen joined Fernando Alonso as only the second driver to have won races from nine different grid positions. Either driver could become the first to win from ten different grid positions, while Lewis Hamilton could equal the existing record.

A 1-2 finish for Mercedes would make them the second team, after Ferrari, to record 60 1-2 finishes in Formula 1. Ferrari reached the milestone at the 2002 United States Grand Prix.

If Nico Hulkenberg scores more than 15 points this weekend, Germany will become the second nation – after Britain – to have scored 8,000 points in Formula 1.

A Q1 exit this weekend for Lance Stroll would see him overtake Marcus Ericsson as the driver who has recorded the second most Q1 exits in Formula 1. It would be his 71st Q1 elimination.

THE MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX RECORDS TO BREAK

Victory for Max Verstappen at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix would see him extend the record for most consecutive wins in Mexico to four. He has won every race in Mexico since 2021.

A win for either Max Verstappen or Sergio Perez would see Red Bull extend the record for most successive team wins in Mexico to four.

Lewis Hamilton currently leads the way for most podium finishes in Mexico, with six. His record tally of top three finishes could be equalled by Max Verstappen at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix.

Ferrari have the most podiums of any team in Mexico, with 12. Mercedes could equal that record at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix – but only if both of their drivers finish in the top three with neither Ferrari driver joining them on the podium.

A Fastest Lap for Valtteri Bottas at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix would see him equal Jim Clark’s record tally of three Fastest Laps at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Ferrari and Mercedes are currently tied for the most Fastest Laps in Mexico, with five apiece. Either team could set a new record at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen is at the top of the list of most laps raced at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, having completed 568 laps at the track. Lewis Hamilton (567), Valtteri Bottas (564) or Carlos Sainz (510) could become the new record holder this weekend.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are tied for most points-scoring appearances in Mexico, with eight apiece. Either driver can extend the record with a top ten finish in the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen or Valtteri Bottas could become the first drivers to cross the finish line on nine occasions at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri will each be looking to maintain their 100% points-scoring rates at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

If Fernando Alonso retires from the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix, he will equal Jo Siffert and Moisés Solana as the driver with the most retirements in Mexico. He would also equal the record for the most consecutive non-finishes at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

A first lap retirement for Yuki Tsunoda or Sergio Perez would make them the first driver to record multiple first lap retirements in Mexico.

2024 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX: QUALIFYING RECORDS

Pole position for Charles Leclerc at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix would make him the third driver – after Jim Clark and Ayrton Senna – to record three pole positions in Mexico.

A top ten qualification for Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen or Valtteri Bottas would see them record a ninth top ten qualification at Autodromo Hermanos Rodrgiuez and move clear of Jack Brabham at the top of the list. Meanwhile, the trio’s record of most Q3 appearances at the track could be equalled this weekend by Carlos Sainz.

Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri will be hoping to hold on to their 100% Q3 appearance rates in Mexico at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso has the most Q2 exits in Mexico, with four. He could extend the record this weekend, or his current tally could be equalled by Sergio Perez or Pierre Gasly.

No one has more Q1 exits in Mexico than Lance Stroll. His record of five Q1 eliminations here could be equalled by Kevin Magnussen in qualifying for the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix.

LONGEVITY RECORDS FOR ALONSO?

A win for Fernando Alonso at any Grand Prix in 2024 would make him the oldest driver to win a Grand Prix since Jack Brabham at the 1970 South African Grand Prix.

A podium finish for Fernando Alonso would see him overtake Alain Prost as the driver to have taken the fourth-most podiums in Formula 1 history.

A podium finish for Fernando Alonso would make him the third driver – after Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton – to record podium finishes in 15 different Formula 1 seasons.

If Fernando Alonso leads a lap of any race in 2024, he would become the first driver to have led Formula 1 races over a period longer than 20 years. Alonso first led a Grand Prix in Malaysia in 2003. He most recently led at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, just a week short of the 20th anniversary of him leading a lap for the first time in Formula 1.

Pole position at any race for Fernando Alonso in 2024 would make him the oldest polesitter since Jack Brabham at the 1970 Spanish Grand Prix.
