2024 Mexico City Grand Prix: Race Statistics, Facts and Trivia

Sainz takes Ferrari’s first win in Mexico since 1990, Magnussen records his best result since 2022 and Alonso retires for the first time in a year. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix.

SAINZ WINS THE 2024 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Carlos Sainz secured the fourth victory of his career at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. This was his second win of the 2024 season, after the Australian Grand Prix, making it the first season in which he has won multiple races.

This was Ferrari’s third win in Mexico – their first in 34 years. Sainz joins Jacky Ickx (in 1970) and Alain Prost (in 1990) on the list of Ferrari drivers who have won in Mexico.

It was the first time Ferrari have won consecutive races since the 2022 British and Austrian Grands Prix.

Sainz’s win makes him the sixth different driver to have won multiple races in the 2024 season. 2024 becomes only the second season – after 1981 – in which as many as six different drivers have won multiple races in a year.

Sainz was voted Driver of the Day for the seventh time in his career. It was the third time he won the accolade this season.

This was Sainz’s first podium appearance at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The 63 laps led by Sainz in the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix made Ferrari the first team to have led 16,000 laps in Formula 1 history.

ON THE PODIUM

Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc joined Carlos Sainz on the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix podium.

Like Sainz, Norris also recorded his first podium finish at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. He had never previously finished in the top four at the track.

Both Sainz and Norris recorded their 25th podium finishes in Formula 1, becoming the 44th and 45th drivers to record as many as 25 top three finishes.

Norris recorded McLaren’s first top three finish in Mexico since Ayrton Senna finished third in the 1991 Mexican Grand Prix. It was the team’s best result here since their last win at the track, in 1989.

McLaren became the first team other than Mercedes, Red Bull or Ferrari to finish on the podium in Mexico since Williams in 2015.

Finishing on the podium for the sixth time in the last seven races, Leclerc secured the fastest lap on the final lap of the race. This was the first time Leclerc set the fastest lap since the 2024 Australian Grand Prix.

Leclerc recorded his 41st podium finish, equalling Felipe Massa for 23rd on the list of all-time Formula 1 podiums.

Leclerc’s podium was the 100th podium finish for the driver of car number 16 in F1. Leclerc has recorded 40 of those podium finishes.

This was Ferrari’s first double podium finish in Mexico since 2018.

IN THE POINTS

Finishing fourth in the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton recorded his best result since winning the Belgian Grand Prix.

This was the first time Hamilton failed to finish on the podium in Mexico since 2018.

During the race, Hamilton became the second driver – after Fernando Alonso – to have raced 20,000 laps in Formula 1.

With George Russell finishing one position behind his team-mate in fifth, this was the first time since the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix that both Mercedes drivers have finished in the top five.

Since F1 returned to Mexico in 2015, there have been only two occasions on which Mercedes have failed to finish on the podium with either car. In both 2018 and 2024, the team finished with their drivers in fourth and fifth.

After being handed two ten second penalties for forcing another driver off track and leaving the track and gaining an advantage, Max Verstappen finished sixth in the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. Verstappen’s DNF at the 2024 Australian Grand Prix remains the only time that he has finished outside of the top six in the last 47 races.

In the last seven race weekends in Mexico, Verstappen has won five times and has finished sixth twice.

With Max Verstappen sixth and Sergio Perez 17th – and both Ferraris finishing on the podium – Red Bull slipped outside of the top two in the Constructors’ Championship for the first time since the 2022 Australian Grand Prix.

This was the first F1 race in Mexico since 2019 in which neither Red Bull driver finished on the podium.

Verstappen’s points made this the 64th consecutive points-scoring weekend for Red Bull. They equal McLaren for the second-longest scoring streak for a team in Formula 1.

Verstappen and Hamilton extended their record for the most points scoring appearances in Mexico. This was the ninth race in Mexico in which both drivers have scored a point.

Kevin Magnussen finished in seventh place at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. This was his best result since finishing fifth at the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix.

This was Magnussen’s best ever result in Mexico and only the second time that he has scored at the circuit, after finishing eighth in the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix.

Magnussen’s points made this the 50th race weekend at which he has scored a point.

With eighth place, Oscar Piastri finished outside of the top five for the first time since finishing 13th in the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. This is the second year in a row that Piastri has finished eighth in Mexico.

Piastri gained nine positions in the race. It’s the most places he’s gained in a Grand Prix since gaining ten positions in the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix.

Finishing ninth, Nico Hulkenberg scored points for the third Grand Prix weekend in a row. Hulkenberg has scored points on all but two of his seven appearances in Mexico.

With both Magnussen and Hulkenberg scoring, this was Haas’ first double points-scoring Grand Prix since the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix. This was also Haas’ fifth points-scoring race in a row – the team’s longest streak since 2018.

This was the first time Haas scored any points in Mexico since 2017, as well as the first time that the team have seen both drivers finish in the points here.

Pierre Gasly finished tenth in the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix, recording his – and his team’s – first point in a Grand Prix since he finished ninth at the Dutch Grand Prix.

This was the first time that Gasly finished a race in Mexico in a worse position than where he started.

Gasly’s tenth place made this the sixth consecutive Mexican race in which the Enstone-based team scored a point.

Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri all maintained their 100% points-scoring rates at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

With 11th place, Lance Stroll recorded his best result since the Belgian Grand Prix. 2017 remains the only time that Stroll has scored in Mexico.

Finishing 12th, Franco Colapinto equalled the worst result of his Formula 1 career to date.

Valtteri Bottas crossed the finish line in 14th place at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix, recording his best result since finishing 13th in the Canadian Grand Prix.

Along with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, Valtteri Bottas became the first driver to cross the finish line on nine occasions in Mexico.

Bottas and team-mate Zhou Guanyu finished in the same positions as they finished in the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez had a home race weekend to forget, finishing in 17th place. This was the third time this year that Perez has been classified in 17th place, after the British and Azerbaijan Grands Prix.

THE RETIREES

There were three retirements at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix – two of which came on the opening lap, when contact between Yuki Tsunoda and Alex Albon put both drivers out of the race.

Tsunoda recorded his third retirement in four appearances at the Mexico City Grand Prix. He recorded his third retirement in the last five Grands Prix.

Tsunoda became the first driver to record multiple first lap retirements in Mexico.

Prior to 2023, Williams had not recorded a DNF in Mexico since 1989. Albon’s retirement was the team’s second at the track in the last two years.

This was Albon’s second DNF in the last three races. It was his first DNF in Mexico.

On the weekend that he celebrated his 400th Formula 1 weekend appearance, Fernando Alonso retired from the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix.

This was Alonso’s fifth retirement in eight appearances at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez – and his third DNF in a row at the track.

Alonso recorded his first retirement of the 2024 season. It was the first time he failed to finish since retiring from last year’s Mexico City Grand Prix.

Alonso equalled Jo Siffert and Moisés Solana as the driver with the most retirements at this circuit and equalled the record for the most consecutive DNFs at the track.

This was the third year in a row that the driver starting 13th in Mexico has failed to finish the race.
