2024 Miami Grand Prix: Qualifying Statistics

Verstappen closes in on the consecutive pole record, McLaren record their longest run of double Q3 appearances in over 12 years and Albon qualifies 14th for the third race in a row. Here are the facts and statistics from qualifying at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix.

VERSTAPPEN ON POLE AT THE 2024 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

After leading the Sprint race from lights to flag, Max Verstappen secured pole position for the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, recording the 38th pole position of his Formula 1 career.

Verstappen became the fifth driver in F1 history to secure seven consecutive pole positions. Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton are the only other drivers to have done so. He is now one pole position away from equalling Senna’s 35-year-old record for the most consecutive poles in F1.

Verstappen is the first driver to secure pole position at all of the first six races of the season since Alain Prost did so in 1993. Only two other drivers have taken pole at all of the first six races of the year – Ayrton Senna (1988) and Nigel Mansell (1992).

Miami International Autodrome is the 22nd different circuit at which Verstappen has taken pole position. He equalled Alain Prost for third on the list of most circuits at which a driver has secured a pole position. Only Lewis Hamilton (32) and Sebastian Vettel (23) now sit ahead of Verstappen on the list.

IN THE TOP 10

Charles Leclerc qualified on the front row for the first time since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Carlos Sainz set the third fastest lap time in Q3 at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. He is the only driver to have qualified in the top three at every running of the Miami Grand Prix to date.

Both McLaren drivers reached Q3 for a seventh successive race at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. This is the team’s longest streak of double Q3 appearances since reaching Q3 with both cars at all 11 races between the 2011 Italian and 2012 Bahrain Grands Prix.

This was the first time McLaren recorded a double Q3 appearance at the Miami Grand Prix. Norris’ eighth place in 2022 was the team’s only previous top ten qualification at Miami International Autodrome.

With fifth place, Lando Norris qualified in the top five for a fourth consecutive race. It’s the first time in his career that he has qualified in the top five at four races in a row.

One position behind his team-mate, Oscar Piastri qualified in the top six for a fifth successive race.

For the first time at the Miami Grand Prix, neither Mercedes driver qualified in the top six. This was, however, the first time that the team recorded a double Q3 appearance at the track.

Nico Hulkenberg made his third Q3 appearance of the season. With ninth place, he equalled his best qualifying result of the season to date.

Yuki Tsunoda reached Q3 for the fourth time in the last five races.

OUT IN Q2

With 12th place, Pierre Gasly recorded his – and Alpine’s – best qualifying result of the season to date. This was the first time Gasly failed to reach Q3 at the Miami Grand Prix.

For the first time since the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, neither Aston Martin driver reached Q3 at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. Both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were eliminated in Q2. It’s the first time neither of the team’s drivers have appeared in Q3 in Miami.

Fernando Alonso ended a streak of eight successive Q3 appearances with his first Q2 elimination since last year’s Mexico City race.

Lance Stroll out-qualified his team-mate in Grand Prix qualifying for the second time this season, having last done so at the Australian Grand Prix.

Alex Albon continued his 100% Q2 exit rate in 2024, qualifying in 14th for a third consecutive race.

Along with Lando Norris, Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon are the only drivers who’ve out-qualified their team-mates at all three Miami Grand Prix weekends to date.

OUT IN Q1

Both Zhou Guanyu and Logan Sargeant continued their record of exiting in Q1 at every race so far this year having exited in the first part of qualifying for the 2024 Miami Grand Prix.

With 17th place, Logan Sargeant recorded his best qualifying result since his Q3 appearance at the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

With both Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas out in Q1, Sauber recorded their third double Q1 elimination of the season. This was the team’s first double Q1 exit since the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Zhou set the slowest qualifying time for the third time this year.

Qualifying 16th, Bottas failed to reach Q3 at the Miami Grand Prix for the first time.

Kevin Magnussen set the 19th fastest time in qualifying for the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, recording a third consecutive Q1 exit. It was the worst qualifying result to date for a Haas driver at the Miami Grand Prix.

Magnussen qualified on the back row for the first time since the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.

Daniel Ricciardo qualified in 18th place for the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. This was the Red Bull junior team’s second Q1 exit in Miami and the team’s worst qualifying result to date at Miami International Autodrome.
