Norris takes pole for the third time in the last four races, Hamilton maintains his record of qualifying in the top five in all 15 Marina Bay appearances and Williams record their best Singapore qualifying since 2016. Here are the facts and statistics from qualifying at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix.
NORRIS ON POLE FOR THE 2024 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX
For the third time in the last four races, Lando Norris secured pole position for the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix. This was the sixth pole of Norris’ career, placing him 47th in Formula 1’s all-time list of pole positions.
Norris secured McLaren’s third pole position at the Singapore Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton took the team’s first two poles at the track, in 2009 and 2012.
This was the fifth pole position for a British driver at the Singapore Grand Prix. Britain equalled Germany as the nation with the most poles at Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Norris’ pole is the first time he has qualified in the top three at the Singapore Grand Prix.
IN THE TOP 10
Max Verstappen qualified on the front row for the first time since the Dutch Grand Prix. Second equals his best qualifying result at the Singapore Grand Prix, having also qualified on the front row in both 2017 and 2018.
Marina Bay Street Circuit remains one of three circuits on the current calendar – along with Baku City Circuit and Las Vegas Strip Circuit – at which Verstappen has never taken pole position.
Qualifying third for the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton maintained his record of never qualifying outside of the top five in any of his 15 appearances at Marina Bay Street Circuit.
This was Hamilton’s first top three qualifying result since he qualified on the front row at the British Grand Prix.
Both Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris maintained their 100% Q3 appearance rates at the Singapore Grand Prix.
With Hamilton and George Russell locking out the second row of the grid, both Mercedes drivers qualified in the top four at the Singapore Grand Prix for the first time since 2018.
After qualifying fifth for the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri has the longest active streak of top six qualifications of any driver. He’s qualified in the top six at every race since the British Grand Prix.
With Norris on pole and Piastri fifth, this was the first time since 2012 that both McLaren drivers qualified in the top five at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso reached Q3 for the 228th time in his career. That saw him equal Sebastian Vettel for second on the list of most Q3 appearances since the qualifying system was introduced in 2006.
2013 remains the only time that Alonso has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Nico Hulkenberg qualified sixth for the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix. It equalled his best qualifying result of the season, having also qualified sixth for the 2024 British Grand Prix.
Hulkenberg has reached Q3 on all six occasions that he has appeared at the Singapore Grand Prix since 2016. Sixth place is Hulkenberg’s best qualifying result to date at Marina Bay Street Circuit. His previous best qualifying result here was seventh, in 2017.
Hulkenberg equalled Haas’ best qualifying result at the Singapore Grand Prix. Kevin Magnussen qualified sixth last year.
Yuki Tsunoda qualified eighth for the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, reaching Q3 for the first time since the Hungarian Grand Prix.
For the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix, neither Ferrari driver qualified in the top eight at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix. This was the first time since 2009 that neither Ferrari qualified in the top six at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Ninth place is Leclerc’s worst qualifying result in Singapore since his maiden season, when he qualified 13th.
OUT IN Q2
For the sixth time in 2024, Sergio Perez failed to reach Q3 at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix. From his 12 appearances at the event, 2016, 2018 and 2022 are the only times that Perez has qualified in the top ten at Marina Bay Street Circuit.
This was Perez’s first Q2 exit since the 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and the first time he failed to reach Q3 since exiting in Q1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
2024 is the second year in a row that Perez has qualified 13th for the Singapore Grand Prix.
For the first time since 2016, both Williams drivers progressed to Q2 at the Singapore Grand Prix. Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto qualified 11th and 12th for the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix – the same positions in which Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa qualified with the team in 2016. Albon out-qualified Colapinto by 0.007 seconds.
Albon’s 11th place marked the first time he missed out on Q3 since qualifying 11th at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Kevin Magnussen qualified 14th, failing to reach Q3 at the Singapore Grand Prix for the first time since 2019.
With Esteban Ocon qualifying 15th and Pierre Gasly out in Q1, this was the first time since 2016 that neither of the Enstone team’s drivers qualified in the top ten at the Singapore Grand Prix.
OUT IN Q1
Qualifying 17th for the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, Lance Stroll recorded his 71st Q1 exit, equalling Marcus Ericsson for second on the list of most all-time Q1 eliminations.
This was Stroll’s fifth Q1 exit from five appearances at the Singapore Grand Prix. He is the first driver to record five Q1 eliminations at the track – and remains the only driver to have had more than three Q1 exits here.
His 12th place in 2022 is the only time that Stroll has qualified above 17th place at the Singapore Grand Prix.
17th place equals Stroll’s worst qualifying result of the 2024 season to date. He also qualified 17th at the Austrian and Italian Grands Prix.
Pierre Gasly qualified 18th for the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix. This was his first ever Q1 exit at Marina Bay Street Circuit, having never previously qualified outside of the top 15.
For the third year in a row, Valtteri Bottas was eliminated in Q1 at the Singapore Grand Prix. With 19th place, he equalled his worst qualifying result of the year to date and qualified on the back row for the third time in 2024.
For the ninth time in 2024, Zhou Guanyu qualified in 20th place. This was his fifth consecutive back row qualification.
This was the first time since 2017 that Sauber set the two slowest qualifying times at the Singapore Grand Prix. 2024 is the second year in a row that the team recorded a double Q1 exit in Singapore.
This was Sauber’s fourth consecutive double Q1 exit in the 2024 season. They also recorded four consecutive double Q1 eliminations between the 2024 Miami and Canadian Grands Prix.
