Ferrari secure their first 1-2 finish in the United States since 2006, Leclerc equals his personal best for most wins in a single season and Hamilton’s retirement ends the longest period without a Safety Car in almost 20 years. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2024 United States Grand Prix.
LECLERC WINS THE 2024 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX
Charles Leclerc took victory at the 2024 United States Grand Prix. This was the eighth victory of his career, equalling Jacky Ickx, Denny Hulme and Daniel Ricciardo for 37th in Formula 1’s all-time win list.
Leclerc secured Ferrari’s second victory at the Circuit of The Americas – the team’s first at the venue since Kimi Raikkonen secured his last win with Ferrari at the 2018 United States Grand Prix.
This was Leclerc’s third victory of the year, after his wins at the Monaco and Italian Grands Prix. It sees him equal his personal best for most wins in a single season. He last won three races in a single year in 2022.
Leclerc finished on the podium for the fifth time in the last six races.
Leclerc was voted F1 Driver of The Day for the 16th time in his career. It was the fourth time this year that he won the vote.
This was the 11th victory for a Ferrari-powered car at the United States Grand Prix in its history on the F1 calendar. That saw Ferrari equal Ford Cosworth as the engine manufacturer to have powered the most wins at the event.
This was the first time that the driver starting fourth won the United States Grand Prix at COTA, as well as the second time – after 2023 – that a driver who did not start on the front row won at the track.
ON THE PODIUM
With Carlos Sainz finishing second, Ferrari secured a 1-2 result. This was their first 1-2 finish at the United States Grand Prix since 2006, when Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa finished first and second at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
2024 is the first season since 2017 in which Ferrari have recorded multiple 1-2 results in a single year.
This was Sainz’s first podium result since the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, as well as his first top two result since winning the 2024 Australian Grand Prix.
2024 is only the second time, after 2017, that both Ferrari drivers finished on the podium in a single race at COTA.
Max Verstappen joined the Ferrari drivers on the 2024 United States Grand Prix podium. This was Verstappen’s first third place finish since the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix. He has taken 44 podium finishes in the interim period.
Verstappen’s podium saw Red Bull equal Mercedes as the team with the most top three finishes at Circuit of The Americas. This was Red Bull’s 12th podium result at the venue.
This was Verstappen’s sixth consecutive top three result at Circuit of The Americas.
Of races he has finished at COTA, this was the first time Verstappen finished in a worse position than where he started.
IN THE POINTS
Lando Norris ran in the top three at the end of the race but a five-second time penalty after being judged to have left the track and gained an advantage dropped him to fourth in the final order.
Norris started from pole position but ended Lap 1 in fourth place. The 2024 United States Grand Prix was the sixth time in the last seven races that the polesitter did not lead at the end of Lap 1 at Circuit of The Americas.
Norris became the first polesitter to complete the first lap in a position outside of the top three since Lewis Hamilton ran fourth at the end of Lap 1 in the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Norris was the only driver to maintain his 100% points-finishing rate at COTA, with Yuki Tsunoda finishing outside of the top ten at the track for the first time. Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto joined Norris in the club of drivers who’ve scored on every appearance at the track.
In the last 17 races, Norris’ DNF in Austria is the only time that he has not finished in the top five.
The 2024 United States Grand Prix was the first since the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix in which neither McLaren driver finished in the top three. It ended a streak of 14 consecutive races with a podium finish for McLaren – the second longest streak in the team’s history.
Finishing fifth, Oscar Piastri crossed the finish line at the United States Grand Prix for the first time.
Piastri finished in the top five for a ninth consecutive race.
This was the first time since 2012 that both McLaren drivers finished in the top five at COTA.
For only the second time in COTA’s history, every driver who started in the top five finished in the top five. It last happened in 2014.
Having started from the pit lane, George Russell finished sixth in the 2024 United States Grand Prix. This was the first top six result for a pit lane starter since the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, when Sergio Perez finished fifth. It was the best-ever result for a pit lane starter at COTA.
With Russell sixth and Lewis Hamilton failing to finish, this was the first time since 2012 that neither Mercedes driver finished in the top five at the United States Grand Prix.
With Max Verstappen third and Sergio Perez seventh, Red Bull picked up points for the 62nd consecutive race, equalling the third longest scoring streak for a team in Formula 1.
Perez scored a point at Circuit of The Americas for the tenth time in his career. That puts him level with Lewis Hamilton for the most points-scoring appearances at the track. He also set a new record for the most classified finishes at the track, with 11, overtaking Hamilton.
This was Perez’s ninth consecutive points-scoring appearance at COTA.
Fourth place at the Miami Grand Prix in May remains the last time that Perez recorded a top five finish. In the last 13 races, the Dutch Grand Prix is the only time that Perez has finished in the top six.
Nico Hulkenberg finished eighth in the 2024 United States Grand Prix. This was the fourth consecutive race in which Haas have scored points. It’s the first time Haas have scored points at four consecutive Grands Prix since scoring at six races in a row between the 2018 French and Belgian Grands Prix.
Hulkenberg’s eighth place was his – and the Haas team’s – best result since finishing sixth in the 2024 British Grand Prix. It was also Haas’ best-ever result at their home race.
On his return to Formula 1, Liam Lawson finished ninth. That saw him equal the best result of his career to date, having last finished ninth at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix.
Lawson’s points made this the ninth time in the last ten COTA races that a driver for the Red Bull junior team has scored a point.
Finishing tenth, Franco Colapinto picked up a point for the second time in his four Formula 1 appearances.
Colapinto is yet to finish a Grand Prix in a worse position than where he started.
THE OTHER FINISHERS
Fernando Alonso finished 13th – his worst result in the last eight races.
With Alonso 13th and Lance Stroll 15th, this was the first United States Grand Prix in which the Silverstone-based team did not pick up a point since 2014, when both Force India drivers retired.
For the first time in his career, Esteban Ocon secured the fastest lap of the race. Ocon took his first fastest lap on his 152nd attempt. Only two drivers have made more starts before taking the fastest lap for the first time: Jarno Trulli (203) and Jenson Button (155).
This was the time that Alpine secured the fastest lap. It was the first time since the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that the Enstone team set the fastest lap of the race.
While Ocon secured his first fastest lap, Lance Stroll set a new record as the driver who has started the most races without ever taking the fastest lap. This was Stroll’s 162nd Grand Prix start, overtaking Johnny Herbert at the top of the list of most starts without a fastest lap.
With Valtteri Bottas 17th and Zhou Guanyu 19th, this was the first time that neither Sauber driver finished in the top 15 at COTA since the track joined the calendar.
HAMILTON RETIRES AT COTA
Lewis Hamilton was the only driver to retire from the 2024 United States Grand Prix, with his race coming to an end in the gravel trap on the second lap.
Before 2022, Hamilton had never finished outside of the top four in the United States Grand Prix. He was disqualified from the 2023 COTA race and failed to finish in 2024.
This was the first ever DNF for a Mercedes driver at the United States Grand Prix.
Hamilton’s retirement brought about a full Safety Car deployment for the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix. It ended the longest period without a Safety Car in almost 20 years.
This was Hamilton’s second retirement of the year – his first since the Australian Grand Prix.
Prior to the 2024 United States Grand Prix, Hamilton had completed every single Grand Prix lap raced at Circuit of The Americas since the track joined the F1 calendar in 2012. Lap 2 of the race was the first at the circuit which Hamilton did not complete.
The 2024 United States Grand Prix weekend was the first in which there were no red flags in any session since the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.
