2025 Chinese Grand Prix: Race Statistics, Facts and Trivia

In only the fourth race in F1 history to have as many as three disqualifications, Piastri converted his maiden pole into a win and Antonelli became the first driver since Hamilton to record top six results in his first two races. Here are the facts and statistics from the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix!

PIASTRI WINS FROM POLE

For the first time in his Formula 1 career, Oscar Piastri won a Grand Prix from pole position. He converted his first pole position into a win at the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, becoming only the second driver to do so – after Carlos Sainz – in the last 13 seasons.

Piastri recorded his third Grand Prix win, becoming the 70th driver to record as many as three wins in Formula 1. He became the 11th different driver to win at Shanghai International Circuit.

The 2025 Chinese Grand Prix marked McLaren’s third consecutive victory. It’s the first time the team has recorded three wins in a row since the 2012 Hungarian, Belgian and Italian Grands Prix.

This was McLaren’s first Chinese Grand Prix victory since Lewis Hamilton’s win in 2011.

With his win, Piastri made the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix the 30th consecutive Grand Prix which he finished. He became the seventh driver to record as many as 30 finishes in a row.

Piastri became only the second driver – after Carlos Sainz – in the last 13 seasons to convert his maiden pole position into a Grand Prix victory. The last driver to do so before them was Pastor Maldonado at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix.

Piastri maintained his 100% points-finishing record at the Chinese Grand Prix and became the eighth driver – after Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso, Giancarlo Fisichella, Jenson Button, Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean and Vitaly Petrov – to score points on both of his first two appearances at Shanghai International Circuit.

This was Piastri’s first top seven result in the Chinese Grand Prix.

ON THE PODIUM AT THE 2025 CHINESE GRAND PRIX

Despite encountering brake issues late on in the race, Lando Norris held on to finish as runner-up to his team-mate in the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix. This was McLaren’s 50th 1-2 finish in Formula 1.

McLaren became the third team to record as many as 50 1-2 results, after Ferrari at the 2001 Malaysian Grand Prix and Mercedes at the 2019 French Grand Prix.

This was McLaren’s first 1-2 at the Chinese Grand Prix since 2010, when Jenson Button led home team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Norris recorded three consecutive podium finishes for the first time since the 2024 Chinese, Miami and Emilia Romagna Grands Prix.

This was the second year in a row that Norris finished second in the Chinese Grand Prix.

For the second race in a row, George Russell finished third in the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix. His podium result marked Mercedes’ 300th top three finish in F1.

Mercedes became the fourth team to record as many as 300 podium finishes, after Ferrari at the 1985 German Grand Prix, McLaren at the 1999 Hungarian Grand Prix and Williams at the 2014 German Grand Prix.

This was the first time Russell recorded consecutive podium finishes since the 2022 Dutch and Italian Grands Prix.

This was Russell’s first top five result at the Chinese Grand Prix.

Russell’s podium saw Mercedes equal Ferrari as the team with the most podium finishes at Shanghai International Circuit. This was the team’s 13th top three result at the track. It was the seventh time in the last eight Shanghai races that at least one Mercedes driver finished in the top three.

Between them Norris and Russell extended Britain’s record for the most podium finishes for a nation at the Chinese Grand Prix to 16.

This was the first race since the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix that all of the top three drivers on the grid went on to finish on the podium.

THREE DRIVERS DISQUALIFIED

Charles Leclerc (originally fifth), Lewis Hamilton (originally sixth) and Pierre Gasly (originally 11th) were all disqualified from the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix following post-race scrutineering checks.

This was the first race since the 2004 Canadian Grand Prix from which as many as three drivers were disqualified. The 2025 Chinese Grand Prix is only the fourth race in history to have as many as three disqualifications, after the 1976 British Grand Prix and the 1989 Canadian Grand Prix – both of which had three DSQs – and the 2004 Canadian Grand Prix, from which four drivers were disqualified.

Ferrari became the first team to see both of their drivers disqualified from the same Grand Prix since Renault at the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix.

This was the first Chinese Grand Prix since 2009 in which Ferrari did not score a point.

This was the first race in Formula 1 history from which both Ferrari drivers were disqualified. The team had recorded only 10 DSQs in their history prior to the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton recorded the third disqualification of his career, after the 2009 Australian Grand Prix and the 2023 United States Grand Prix. He is the 13th driver to record as many as three DSQs in his F1 career.

Charles Leclerc became the 30th driver to record multiple disqualifications in Formula 1. Like Hamilton, his last DSQ was at the 2023 United States Grand Prix.

Hamilton originally set the fastest lap of the race, but his disqualification meant that Lando Norris inherited the fastest lap. It was the fourth time in the last five races that Norris set the fastest race lap.

This was the second race at Shanghai International Circuit from which a driver has been disqualified. The only other driver to be disqualified here was Takuma Sato in the 2006 Chinese Grand Prix, for ignoring blue flags.

IN THE POINTS

Finishing fourth in the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, Max Verstappen made this the 23rd consecutive Grand Prix in which he scored points, equalling the sixth-longest points-scoring streak in F1 history.

With sixth place in the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli finished in the top six for a second consecutive race. He became only the tenth driver in history to record top six finishes in both of his first two Grand Prix appearances.

Antonelli became the first driver to score in both of his first Grand Prix appearances since Ollie Bearman in 2024 and the first to finish in the top six in both of his first two races since Lewis Hamilton in 2007.

Antonelli was voted Driver Of The Day for the first time in his career.

Haas celebrated their first double points finish since the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix, as well as their first double top eight finish since the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix.

Esteban Ocon’s fifth place finish marked the sixth time that the team recorded a top five finish in Formula 1. It was the first time a Haas driver has finished in the top five since Kevin Magnussen finished fifth at the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix.

This was the first time both Haas drivers finished in the points in the Chinese Grand Prix. Their previous best result here was eighth place, while tenth places in 2018 and 2024 were the only other times that they had scored.

This was the first time since 2017, when he finished tenth, that Ocon scored points in the Chinese Grand Prix. It marked his best result at the track to date.

Ollie Bearman and Kimi Antonelli joined Oscar Piastri as the only drivers with a 100% points-scoring rate at the Chinese Grand Prix.

With eighth place, Bearman recorded his second-best Grand Prix result to date, bettered only by his seventh place finish on debut with Ferrari at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Bearman gained nine positions from where he started – the most of any driver in the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix.

Alex Albon finished seventh in the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, becoming the fourth driver – after James Hunt, Stefan Johansson and Jacques Villeneuve – to score a point when racing on his 29th birthday.

Albon led a lap during the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix. It was the first time he led a lap since the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, as well as the first time Williams led a lap since the 2015 British Grand Prix.

With fifth place in Australia and seventh in China, Alex Albon is having the best start to a season for a Williams driver since Felipe Massa in 2015.

Albon scored points in two races in a row for the first time since the 2024 Italian and Azerbaijan Grands Prix.

Lance Stroll scored points for the second race in a row, finishing ninth in the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix. This was the first time he scored at successive races since the 2024 British and Hungarian Grands Prix – which was also the last time he scored any points before the start of the 2025 season.

This was the first time in his five appearances at the Chinese Grand Prix that Stroll scored a point. His previous best result here was 12th, in 2019.

With tenth place in the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz secured his first point as a Williams driver.

This was the fifth time Sainz scored points in his seven Chinese Grand Prix appearances.

This was the first time that both Williams drivers finished in the points at the Chinese Grand Prix since 2016.

Sainz’s tenth place finish marked the first time that the driver starting 15th scored a point in Chinese Grand Prix history.

THE OTHER FINISHERS

Isack Hadjar started and completed a Grand Prix for the first time in his career, finishing 11th in the final order.

Liam Lawson finished 12th in the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix – his best result since finishing ninth in the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Lawson became the first Red Bull driver to fail to score a point at the Chinese Grand Prix since Daniil Kvyat retired from the race in 2015.

With Jack Doohan finishing 13th and Pierre Gasly being disqualified, Alpine are now the only team yet to score a point in the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Yuki Tsunoda finished 16th after picking up front wing damage during the race. He did at least move out of the group of drivers who have a 100% non-finish rate at Shanghai International Circuit.

ALONSO THE ONLY RETIREMENT

Fernando Alonso was the only driver to retire from the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix. He retired with brake issues in the early stages.

Alonso has now retired from the first two races of the season. It’s his worst start to a year since 2017, when he also retired from the first two races. This was Alonso’s second retirement at the Chinese Grand Prix – his first since 2017.

This was the first time Alonso recorded consecutive DNFs since the 2023 United States and Mexico City Grands Prix.

This was the first time the Silverstone-based team recorded a retirement in China since 2015, when Nico Hulkenberg failed to finish with Force India.
