2025 Pre-Season F1 Testing Statistics

From daily results to the fastest lap times, fastest sector times and most laps completed, here are all the facts and statistics from pre-season 2025 F1 testing!

DAY 1 TESTING REPORT

Formula 1 returned to action with pre-season testing at Bahrain International Circuit. For the third year in a row, Mercedes were the first team out on track in the Bahrain test and the rest of the teams were quick to follow rookie Kimi Antonelli out of the pit lane.

Most teams completed a full race distance in the morning session. Liam Lawson suffered the first big moment of the day, flatspotting his tyres with a spin out of Turn 2 and being lucky to keep the RB21 out of the barriers and avoid the gravel trap. His team-mate Max Verstappen also had some smaller off-track endeavours during his first laps of the afternoon session.

With plenty of work to do for the teams over the lunch hour – mostly preparing the cars for the second driver of the day to take over – there was a slow start to the afternoon. After 20 minutes passed with no action, cars began to return to the track. Isack Hadjar’s spin in his Racing Bull was the only talking point in the early stages of the afternoon, though Lando Norris’ lack of running in the McLaren caught the attention of many.

The first red flag of pre-season testing was shown with two hours of the afternoon session remaining – though it was through no fault of any driver. Simultaneously, the floodlights around the circuit dimmed and teams’ garages fell under darkness due to a power cut at the track, caused by an external substation failure.

The delay lasted for over an hour. On-track action resuming with 50 minutes remaining on the clock. The session was extended by an hour as result of the substantial red flag period.

Antonelli set the fastest time in the morning session but ended the day seventh, with Lando Norris setting the fastest time of the day overall, lapping with a 1:30.430 on the C3 tyres. Haas completed the furthest distance, while Sauber completed the fewest laps.

DAY 2 TESTING REPORT

Unusually for a track that is situated in the Sakhir desert, Day 2 of pre-season F1 testing at Bahrain International Circuit began in somewhat damp conditions. Only Haas and Aston Martin brought any wet tyres with them, with only the American team opting to bolt on the intermediate tyres as the rain fell. Fewer than 500 laps were completed in the morning session as a result of the rain, compared to the 654 which were completed on the first morning.

George Russell was the first driver to dip under the 1:30s but moments later former team-mate Lewis Hamilton usurped him from the top of the timesheet. There were relatively few incidents in the morning, though we did see the first contact of the year. Oscar Piastri and Nico Hulkenberg made light contact at Turn 8, with the Sauber tapping the front wing of the McLaren.

There was a red flag near the end of the morning session but that was a result of systems checks, which also saw VSC deployed and a phantom appearance from the Safety Car. The session ended with Piastri, Esteban Ocon and George Russell making a standing start on the grid as further system checks took place.

A water pressure issue left Liam Lawson stuck in the garage for the end of the morning session, with him completing only 28 laps. He soon made up for lost time in the afternoon session. He and Carlos Sainz were the only drivers staying in the car all day, with the rest of the teams opting to split their drivers’ duties for a second day running. Sainz and Charles Leclerc encountered spins at the first and last corners respectively.

Sainz became the first driver to reach 100 laps completed on Day 2 as drivers set about embarking on race simulations and he ended the day fastest, as Williams completed a qualifying simulation run early on in the afternoon.

DAY 3 TESTING REPORT

The final day of pre-season F1 testing began in warmer conditions than the previous two days of testing had taken place in. 18 of the 20 drivers were in action on Day 3, with Carlos Sainz and Liam Lawson having completed their pre-season running yesterday.

Lance Stroll had been due to drive for Aston Martin on Friday morning but the team reported that he was unwell. Fernando Alonso took over for the morning, with Stroll returning to the cockpit in the afternoon. Stroll completed 35 laps in the afternoon, before Alonso stepped back into the car.

It was a day of unusual situations on track, beginning with bodywork flying off Ollie Bearman’s Haas. Then, there were three strange reasons for red flag periods. First, a smashed pane of glass in the starting gantry which fell onto the start/finish straight below caused a red flag. The glass cleared, the green light illuminated at the end of the pit lane only to turn red almost immediately after due to a quad bike still being on track. That wasn’t the only non-F1 machinery on track on the last day of F1 testing. The afternoon session was red-flagged when a bus appeared in the run-off area on the live circuit.

Kimi Antonelli, Gabriel Bortoleto and Max Verstappen spent extended periods in their garages in the morning session. Lewis Hamilton failed to complete a full race distance in the afternoon session, though it was Red Bull who completed the fewest laps in total on the final day.

Charles Leclerc was fastest in the morning session but his time was knocked down the order as other drivers lapped quicker during performance runs in the final four-hour afternoon session. In the final hour, Esteban Ocon and Max Verstappen both spun at Turn 1 within five minutes of each other. The lap times tumbled as the sunset but nobody bettered Carlos Sainz’s benchmark from Day 2. George Russell finished the day fastest, two tenths away from the previous day’s fastest.

CAUSES OF RED FLAGS

Here is a list of every time that track action was stopped during pre-season 2025 F1 testing:

DAY 1

The first red flag of F1 testing in 2025 was shown two hours into the afternoon session on Day 1. It was the result of a power failure, which caused the circuit’s floodlights and the lights in teams’ garages to go out. The red flag period lasted just over an hour and an extra hour was added to the session to make up for the lost time.

DAY 2

The only red flags on Day 2 of F1 testing were a result of systems checks. The red flag was shown five minutes before the end of each session. Drivers then went back out onto the track to complete a standing start in the morning session and a rolling start in the afternoon session. The red flag was shown after both of these tests were complete to officially end each session.

DAY 3

The first red flag of Day 3 came in the final hour of the morning session, when a pane of glass in the starting gantry smashed onto the pit straight below. A red flag was called while the glass was swept away.

The second red flag was shown immediately after the first red flag period ended. The green light at the end of the pit lane was shown whilst there was still a quad bike on track at the end of the main straight.

The final red flags of testing came as a result of systems checks at the end of Day 3’s morning session. The first was followed by a standing start procedure, while the second was called to end the session.
