RACE BY RACE: ALEX ALBON’S 2024 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2024 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon made his 83rd start in car number 23 at the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix, equalling Pierluigi Martini for the most starts in car 23. Albon qualified 13th for the race, becoming the first Williams driver to qualify in the top 13 positions in Bahrain since both of the team’s drivers did so in 2017. Albon recorded his fifth Q2 elimination at Bahrain International Circuit, equalling Sergio Perez as the driver with the most Q2 exits at the track.

Having started 13th, Albon finished 15th. This was the first time Albon has finished in a worse position than where he started in Bahrain.

2024 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon made his 84th start in car number 23 at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, overtaking Pierluigi Martini for the most starts in car 23. Albon made it out of Q1 at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix for the first time in his three appearances at the track. Albon’s 12th place was the team’s best qualifying result at the track to date.

Albon came home in 11th place at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, crossing the finish line at Jeddah Corniche Circuit for the first time in his career.

2024 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

A crash for Alex Albon in Free Practice 1 meant that Williams could field only one car for the rest of the 2024 Australian Grand Prix weekend. Williams gave Albon the seat ahead of his team-mate Logan Sargeant. Qualifying 12th, Alex Albon exited in Q2 for a fourth successive race weekend. He finished finished 11th for a second consecutive race.

2024 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

With 14th place in qualifying for the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix, Alex Albon recorded his worst qualifying result of the season to date. Albon failed to finish for a third consecutive appearance at the Japanese Grand Prix. His fourth place finish with Red Bull in 2019 remains the only time that he has reached the chequered flag at Suzuka. Albon’s retirement marked Williams’ fourth DNF in the last three Suzuka races.

2024 CHINESE GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon continued his record of exiting in Q2 at every race so far in 2024 at the Chinese Grand Prix. He equalled his worst qualifying result of the year so far, with 14th place. With 12th place in the race, Albon recorded the best result for a Williams driver at the Chinese Grand Prix since both of the team’s cars finished in the top ten in 2016.

2024 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon continued his 100% Q2 exit rate in 2024, qualifying in 14th for a third consecutive race. Albon is one of only three drivers – along with Lando Norris and Pierre Gasly – who has out-qualified his team-mate at all three Miami Grand Prix weekends to date.

2024 EMILIA ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon qualified in 14th place for a fourth consecutive race weekend. This was Albon’s eighth Q2 exit in a row. Albon was the only driver to retire from the 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. This was Albon’s second retirement of the season, after his first lap DNF at the Japanese Grand Prix. This was the first time Albon failed to reach the chequered flag in his three appearances at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It was Williams’ fourth DNF in the last four Imola races.

2024 MONACO GRAND PRIX

After seven consecutive Q2 exits in the first seven races of the year, Alex Albon finally recorded Williams’ first Q3 appearance of the season at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. Albon became the first Williams driver to reach Q3 at the Monaco Grand Prix since Pastor Maldonado in 2012. Ninth place is Albon’s best Monaco Grand Prix qualifying performance to date and his first Q3 appearance at the Monaco Grand Prix since 2019, when he was driving for Toro Rosso.

With ninth place in the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, Alex Albon scored his and Williams’ first points of the year. This was Albon’s first points finish since the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix. All of Albon’s last three points-scoring Grands Prix have been ninth place finishes. Albon became the first Williams driver to score points at the Monaco Grand Prix since Felipe Massa, who finished ninth in 2017. This was the first time Albon scored a point at the Monaco Grand Prix since 2019, when he finished eighth with Toro Rosso.

2024 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon progressed to Q3 for the second consecutive race. It was the first time a Williams driver has reached Q3 at two races in a row since he did so at the 2023 Dutch and Italian Grands Prix. This was the second consecutive season in which Albon has qualified tenth for the Canadian Grand Prix.

With Albon retiring late on in the race – and team-mate Logan Sargeant having already retired – Williams recorded their first double non-finish at the Canadian Grand Prix since both drivers were disqualified from the 2004 race. This was their first double DNF at the track since 1995. Albon’s retirement marked the first DNF for the driver starting tenth on the grid at the Canadian Grand Prix since 2007, when Jarno Trulli retired having started there.

2024 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon qualified 19th for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix, exiting in Q1 for the first time this season. This was his first back row qualification since the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. With Logan Sargeant 20th and Albon 18th, this was the first time in Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya’s history that neither Williams driver finished in the top 17.

2024 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

Qualifying 16th for the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, Alex Albon recorded a Q1 exit at the Red Bull Ring for the first time in his career. He also qualified 16th for the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix – though that was as the result of a Sprint event.

2024 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon reached Q3 for the third time in the last five races. Qualifying ninth for the 2024 British Grand Prix, he equalled his best qualifying result of the year. He also qualified ninth in Montreal. Albon’s ninth place made this the fourth consecutive season in which a Williams driver has qualified in the top ten at Silverstone.

Albon recorded Williams’ second points-scoring finish of the season with a ninth place finish at the 2024 British Grand Prix. Albon has scored all of Williams’ points so far this year, having also finished ninth in the Monaco Grand Prix.

2024 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Although 2016 remains the last time that a Williams driver reached Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, this was the first time since 2020 that both Williams drivers progressed to Q2 at the track. Alex Albon out-qualified his team-mate for a 46th consecutive appearance.

2024 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

With 12th place in the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, Alex Albon failed to score at Spa-Francorchamps for the second year in a row. This was the second time in his five appearances at the track that he failed to score.

2024 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon recorded Williams’ best qualifying result of the season to date with eighth place. This was the fourth time that the team has appeared in Q3 this year – with every occasion being thanks to Albon. However, after the session, Albon was disqualified from the result, meaning he started alongside his team-mate at the back of the grid.

Having started 19th, Albon gained five positions in the race – the most places he had gained in a race to date in 2024.

2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon reached Q3 for the fifth time in the 2024 season, qualifying ninth for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. This was Albon’s fourth Q3 appearance in four outings at Monza. Oscar Piastri and Sebastien Bourdais are the only other drivers who’ve reached Q3 on every appearance at Monza.

Finishing ninth in the Italian Grand Prix, Albon scored points for the third time in 2024. Albon has finished ninth on all three of his points-scoring appearances to date this year, having also finished ninth at the Monaco and British Grands Prix. This was Albon’s third points finish from his four appearances at the Italian Grand Prix. 2024 is the fourth consecutive season in which Williams have scored a point at the Italian Grand Prix.

2024 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon reached Q3 for a third consecutive race. It was the first time he qualified in the top ten at three races in a row since the 2023 Canadian, Austrian and British Grands Prix. This was Albon’s first Q3 appearance in Azerbaijan. For the first time since the 2022 British Grand Prix, Albon was out-qualified by his team-mate in Grand Prix qualifying.

With seventh place in the race, Albon recorded his best result since finishing seventh in the 2023 Italian Grand Prix. Having finished ninth last time out in Monza, this was the first time Albon scored points at consecutive races since the 2023 United States and Mexico City Grands Prix.

2024 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon’s 11th place in qualifying for the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix marked the first time he missed out on Q3 since qualifying 11th at the Belgian Grand Prix. Albon was the first driver to retire from the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix. It marked the Williams driver’s first DNF since the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix and marked the second time, after 2022, that he retired in Singapore.

2024 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

At the 2024 United States Grand Prix, Alex Albon became the 80th driver to have made 100 Grand Prix starts. He made his 62nd start with Williams, seeing him move ahead of Nicholas Latifi and equal Keke Rosberg for ninth on the list of drivers who’ve made the most starts with Williams in the team’s Formula 1 history.

For the first time since the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, both Williams drivers were eliminated in Q1. This was Williams’ fourth double Q1 exit in the last six races at COTA. Albon exited in Q1 at COTA for the second year in a row.

2024 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon became the first Williams driver to qualify in the top ten at the Mexico City Grand Prix since both drivers reached Q3 in 2016. This was Albon’s seventh Q3 appearance of the 2024 season and his first Q3 appearance in Mexico since 2019.

There were three retirements at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix – two of which came on the opening lap, when contact between Yuki Tsunoda and Albon put both drivers out of the race. Prior to 2023, Williams had not recorded a DNF in Mexico since 1989. Albon’s retirement was the team’s second at the track in the last two years. This was Albon’s second DNF in the last three races. It was his first DNF in Mexico.

2024 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

Before crashing, Alex Albon qualified seventh for the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, recording his best qualifying result of the season to date. It was his best qualifying result since setting the sixth fastest time in Q3 at the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Seventh place was Williams’ best qualifying result in Sao Paulo since Valtteri Bottas qualified fourth with the team in 2015.

Following his heavy crash in Q3 on Sunday morning, Albon’s car could not be fixed in time for the start of the race. He therefore recorded the first DNS of his career. This was the third time Albon failed to reach the chequered flag in the last four races.

2024 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

With 18th place, Alex Albon recorded his worst qualifying result since the Spanish Grand Prix. For the fourth time in the last five races, Albon recorded a non-finish at the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Albon became the first Williams driver to record non-finishes at three Grands Prix in a row since Lance Stroll in the first three races of the 2017 season.

2024 QATAR GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon recorded consecutive Q1 exits for the first time since the Spanish and Austrian Grands Prix. He finished 15th in the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix. With Franco Colapinto retiring, this was the third consecutive Qatar Grand Prix in which one Williams drivers failed to score while the other failed to finish.

2024 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

Alex Albon made his 66th start with Williams at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, moving ahead of Damon Hill and into eighth on the list of most starts with Williams in their Formula 1 history.

Albon exited in Q1 for a third consecutive race. This was the first time Albon recorded Q1 exits at three successive races since the 2022 Spanish, Monaco and Azerbaijan Grands Prix. Finishing 11th in the race, Albon failed to score a point for a seventh consecutive appearance. It became his longest point-less streak since the start of the season. Albon gained seven positions during the race – the most places he has gained since gaining nine places in the 2022 Miami Grand Prix.
