A STATISTIC FROM EVERY GRAND PRIX
2021 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX
Both Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen progressed to Q2. It’s only the second time in the last nineteen races that neither Alfa Romeo driver has been eliminated in Q1, the other time being at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. Giovinazzi recorded his best Bahrain qualifying result with twelfth place, bettering his previous best of fourteenth at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.
2021 EMILIA ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi finished fourteenth in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It was the second time in the last three Imola races that an Italian driver has finished in fourteenth place on home soil. Vitantonio Liuzzi also finished fourteenth for Toro Rosso at the 2006 San Marino Grand Prix.
2021 PORTUGUESE GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi out-qualified Kimi Raikkonen for the fifth time in the last six races. With twelfth place, the Italian recorded his best qualifying result since reaching Q3 at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. He also finished in twelfth place for the second time in the first three races of 2021.
2021 SPANISH GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi progressed past Q1 at the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time. Giovinazzi’s fourteenth place in qualifying made 2021 the fourth consecutive season in which an Alfa Romeo (formerly Sauber) driver has qualified fourteenth at the Spanish Grand Prix. The Italian went on to finish the race in fifteenth place – his best result so far at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
2021 MONACO GRAND PRIX
After reaching Q3 for the first time since last year’s Turkish Grand Prix, Antonio Giovinazzi recorded Alfa Romeo’s first point of the season with a tenth place finish in Monaco. It was his and the team’s first points finish since the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Giovinazzi scored the first point for the Alfa Romeo/Sauber team at the Monaco Grand Prix since Felipe Nasr finished ninth in 2015. Giovinazzi’s tenth place was the first time that a team named Alfa Romeo has scored at the Monaco Grand Prix since Mauro Baldi finished sixth in 1983.
2021 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi was the second driver to crash out in Q1 at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He was classified 20th in the session. It was the first time he has qualified last since the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix – a race in which he went on to score points. He was not quite so lucky in Sunday’s race, where he finished eleventh.
2021 FRENCH GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi has now lost positions on both French Grand Prix appearances – though he only lost two from his thirteenth place qualifying position in 2021, compared to six from tenth place in 2019.
2021 STYRIAN GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi reached Q2 at the Styrian Grand Prix, managing to do what neither Alfa Romeo driver did at either of last year’s Red Bull Ring races. The Italian failed to make any progress in the race, finishing where he started at this circuit for the first time.
2021 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi out-qualified his team for the third race in a row; the fifth time that he has out-qualified his team-mate at three successive races in his career. The Italian finished the race in fourteenth place, finishing ahead of his team-mate in a race for the fourth time this year.
2021 BRITISH GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi is still yet to be out-qualified by his team-mate at Silverstone after the 2021 British Grand Prix. He finished the race in thirteenth place – his best British Grand Prix result to date.
2021 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX
With thirteenth place, Antonio Giovinazzi recorded his best Hungarian Grand Prix result to date. His previous best was seventeenth place, in 2020.
2021 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX
With thirteenth place, Antonio Giovinazzi finally secured his first classified result at the Belgian Grand Prix. He retired from the race on his previous two appearances in 2019 and 2020.
2021 DUTCH GRAND PRIX
For the second time in 2021, Antonio Giovinazzi reached Q3. He also appeared in Q3 at the Monaco Grand Prix. Giovinazzi qualified in seventh place – the best qualifying result of his Formula 1 career to date. His previous best qualifying result is eighth place, recorded twice – at the 2019 Azerbaijan and Austrian Grands Prix. A puncture cost the Italian any chance of scoring points in the race.
2021 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX
For only the second time in his career, Antonio Giovinazzi reached Q3 at consecutive races. He last did so at the 2019 French and Austrian Grands Prix. The Alfa Romeo driver started the Italian Grand Prix from seventh place – the best grid position for an Italian driver at their home race since Vitantonio Liuzzi lined up seventh on the grid at the 2009 Italian Grand Prix. Contact on the first lap saw him drop out of the points and, for the fourth time in the last five races, he finished in thirteenth place.
2021 RUSSIAN GRAND PRIX
Finishing in sixteenth place – and suffering with no team radio communication for the entirety of the race – Antonio Giovinazzi recorded his worst Russian Grand Prix result to date. The Italian is yet to record a retirement in 2021, but this was his worst result of the year to date.
2021 TURKISH GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi finished just outside of the points in eleventh place, equalling his second-best result of the 2021 season. He also finished eleventh at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. His only better result result in 2021 is tenth place at the Monaco Grand Prix.
2021 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi finished just outside of the points in eleventh place for a second consecutive race. It’s his best result to date at COTA, having finished fourteenth here on his first visit in 2019.
2021 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX
For a third race in a row, Antonio Giovinazzi finished in eleventh place. The Italian had run as high as sixth in the opening stages of the race.
2021 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX
Finishing in fourteenth, Antonio Giovinazzi finished in a position other than eleventh for the first time since the Russian Grand Prix.
2021 QATAR GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi finished fifteenth for the ninth time in his career. As a result, he overtakes team-mate Kimi Raikkonen as the driver with the most fifteenth places on the current grid.
2021 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX
Antonio Giovinazzi qualified in tenth place for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, reaching Q3 for the first time since the Italian Grand Prix. He finished in ninth place, recording his best finish of the 2021 season and his best result since the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix. It’s the second time he’s scored this year, after the Monaco Grand Prix.
2021 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX
In his final F1 qualifying session, Antonio Giovinazzi reached Q2 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for a second consecutive season. He qualified fourteenth, just as he did in 2020. Giovinazzi had finished every race in the 2021 season until the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. On his final appearance, the Italian recorded his first retirement since the 2020 Russian Grand Prix.
