2022 Bahrain Grand Prix
With Carlos Sainz finishing in second place, Ferrari recorded their first 1-2 finish since the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix. Sainz equalled his career-best result, finishing as runner-up for the third time. Crossing the finish line for the 30th race in a row, Sainz became only the fifth driver – after Lewis Hamilton, Daniel Ricciardo, Nick Heidfeld and Kimi Raikkonen – to reach the chequered flag at 30 consecutive races. This was also the 16th consecutive race in which Sainz has scored. It’s the 20th occasion on which a driver has scored at 16 Grands Prix in a row.
2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix
With third place, Carlos Sainz finished on the podium for the third race in succession. It’s the first time in his career that he has recorded three podium finishes in a row. This was Sainz’s 31st consecutive finish, putting him fifth in the all time list of consecutive Grand Prix finishes. Sainz also scored for the 17th race in a row, making him only the 11th driver to have such a long points-scoring streak in F1.
2022 Australian Grand Prix
Just like last time out in Australia in 2019, Carlos Sainz was the first retirement of the race. Sainz’s retirement brought an end to his 31-race finishing streak. He had not retired from a race since the 2020 Russian Grand Prix. It was the fifth longest finishing streak in F1 history.
2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix
For the second race in a row, Carlos Sainz was the first retirement from the Grand Prix. Sainz is the first driver to record the first retirement at two consecutive Grands Prix since Kevin Magnussen, who was first out at 2020’s pair of races at Silverstone. This is the first time that Sainz has recorded DNFs at consecutive races since the 2020 Tuscan and Russian Grands Prix. Sainz became the first Ferrari driver to retire at Imola since Rubens Barrichello in the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix.
2022 Miami Grand Prix
With Carlos Sainz qualifying in second place, Ferrari locked-out the front row of the grid for the first time since the 2019 Mexican Grand Prix. This was the second time that Sainz has qualified on the front row. He last did so at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix. Sainz returned to the podium for the first time since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, recording the ninth podium result of his career.
2022 Spanish Grand Prix
Qualifying in third place, Carlos Sainz qualified in the top four for the first time at his home event. Sainz went on to finish in fourth place, recording his best home result to date. He retains his record of scoring points on every home race appearance.
2022 Monaco Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz equalled the best result of his career with second place. This was the fourth time Sainz has finished as runner-up. He equals Romain Grosjean for fourth in the list of most F1 podiums without taking a victory.
2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz was the first driver to retire from the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, pulling off the circuit at Turn 4. He recorded Ferrari’s first ever retirement at Baku City Circuit. It was his third DNF of the season.
2022 Canadian Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz recorded his fifth podium finish of the year, finishing as runner-up for the fifth time in his career. He did so after recording his best ever Canadian Grand Prix qualifying result with third place, beating his previous best of ninth. Sainz led 17 laps of the race, which is the most laps he has led in a single Grand Prix so far in his career. He set the fastest lap of the race for the second time in his career.
With his 11th top three finish, Sainz equalled Chris Amon for third in the list of most podiums without a win. Only Nick Heidfeld (13) and Stefan Johansson (12) are ahead of the Spaniard.
2022 British Grand Prix
The 2022 British Grand Prix marked Carlos Sainz’s 150th race start. And for the second race weekend in a row, a driver won on their 150th start. Sainz became the 112th winner in World Championship history, becoming the first driver to take his maiden win at Silverstone since Johnny Herbert in 1995. He is the 40th driver to have won a Grand Prix with Ferrari.
Carlos Sainz slots into second on the lists of both most qualifying appearances before a maiden pole position and most starts before a win. Only Sergio Perez made more appearances before taking his first pole position or win. Sainz became the first driver to convert his maiden pole position into a win since Pastor Maldonado at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix, over ten years ago.
2022 Austrian Grand Prix
With third place, Carlos Sainz equalled his best Red Bull Ring qualifying result. He also qualified third for the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix. In the race, Sainz recorded his fourth retirement of the season. He became the first driver to retire having started third on the grid since Max Verstappen at the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This was the first retirement for the driver starting third in Austria since Juan Pablo Montoya in 2003.
2022 French Grand Prix
With a back of the grid penalty, Carlos Sainz did not set a competitive time in Q3. Qualifying ninth, he became the first Ferrari driver to qualify outside of the top eight at Circuit Paul Ricard since Stefan Johansson qualified tenth in 1986.
Sainz gained 14 places on his way to fifth place in the 2022 French Grand Prix. It’s the most positions he has gained in a race since gaining 17 in the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix. This was the first time Sainz has finished in the top five at the French Grand Prix, as well as the first time he has gained positions at the event.
2022 Hungarian Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz qualified on the front row at the Hungarian Grand Prix for the first time. His previous best qualifying result here was fifth, recorded in 2018. Finishing in fourth place, Sainz made this the seventh consecutive Hungarian Grand Prix in which he has scored points.
2022 Belgian Grand Prix
Max Verstappen set the fastest time in qualifying by over six tenths of a second but a grid penalty meant that Carlos Sainz started from pole position at the 2022 Belgian Grand Prix. Sainz secured the second pole position of his career, making him the 71st driver to take multiple pole positions in Formula 1. This was the first time that Sainz has qualified in the top six at the Belgian Grand Prix. His previous best Saturday result at Spa was seventh, recorded with McLaren in 2020.
Sainz finished in third place, marking the first time he has finished above tenth place at Spa. It marked his first podium result since his victory at the British Grand Prix. Sainz’s third place was the first time that the polesitter has finished third at two consecutive races since the 2012 Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix.
2022 Dutch Grand Prix
With a five second time penalty applied for an unsafe release from his pit box, Carlos Sainz finished the Dutch Grand Prix in eighth place. It was the first time he finished outside of the top five in a race which he has completed since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, in which he also finished eighth.
2022 Italian Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz qualified in the top three for the fourth consecutive race, recording the longest streak of top three qualifications in his career to date. As a result of a power unit penalty, Sainz dropped to 18th on the final grid but recovered to finish fourth. Sainz became the first driver to finish in the top four having started from 18th on the grid since Max Verstappen finished on the podium at the 2018 United States Grand Prix.
2022 Singapore Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz recorded his first Singapore Grand Prix podium finish and his 14th in total, equalling the career tally of Richie Ginther. As a result of picking up more points, Sainz became the 18th driver to have scored in 100 Grands Prix. The Spaniard qualified in fourth place, securing his best Singapore Grand Prix qualifying result. His previous best was sixth place in 2016 with Toro Rosso.
2022 Japanese Grand Prix
After qualifying in the top six at Suzuka for the first time, Carlos Sainz was eliminated from the race on the opening lap. Sainz recorded his fourth retirement of the season – his first since the Austrian Grand Prix. This was the second time Sainz has retired from the Japanese Grand Prix. He last retired at Suzuka, also on the first lap, on his last appearance with Toro Rosso in 2017. Sainz joined Jean Alesi as only the second driver to record multiple first lap retirements at Suzuka. Alesi was out on Lap 1 in 1991 and 1996.
2022 United States Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz secured the third pole position of his career. He secured pole by 0.061 seconds – the third smallest pole margin seen at Circuit of The Americas. This was the first time Sainz qualified in the top five at the United States Grand Prix. His previous best Saturday result at COTA was sixth, recorded in 2021.
Sunday was less successful, as Sainz was the first driver to retire from the race. This was the first time that Sainz has failed to score at the United States Grand Prix. Sainz’s retirement made the 2022 United States Grand Prix the first race at Circuit of The Americas in which the driver who started from pole failed to finish on the podium.
Sainz became the first Ferrari driver to record six retirements in a single season since Michael Schumacher in 2005. With Sainz pulling into the pits at the end of Lap 1, this was the first race in which the polesitter did not cross the line at the end of Lap 1 in first or second since the 2021 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
2022 Mexico City Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz’s unusual qualifying record continued in Mexico. Qualifying fifth, he has qualified one position better than on his previous appearance on every visit to the Mexico City Grand Prix. Sainz finished where he started, in fifth place, reaching the end of a Grand Prix for the first time since the Singapore Grand Prix. This marked his best result in Mexico to date.
2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix
With third place, Carlos Sainz returned to the podium for the first time since the Singapore Grand Prix. This was Sainz’s 15th podium finish in total, equalling the career tallies of Jose-Frolian Gonzalez and Thierry Boutsen. Interlagos becomes the second circuit, after Monaco, at which Sainz has taken multiple top three finishes.
2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz qualified in fourth place – his best Saturday result to date in Abu Dhabi. Sainz also finished fourth, recording a top five finish for the third consecutive race.
