RACE BY RACE: CARLOS SAINZ’S 2024 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS
2024 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz qualified fourth at the Bahrain Grand Prix for the second year in a row. He finished on the podium on Saturday, which gave Ferrari the new outright record for the most podium finishes in Bahrain, having previously been tied with Mercedes. This was the team’s 17th top three finish at the track. Sainz’s efforts saw him voted Driver of the Day for the fifth time in his Formula 1 career.
2024 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX
After suffering from appendicitis, Carlos Sainz missed the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. This was Sainz’s first non-start since the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, the first race for which he did not qualify since the 2015 Russian Grand Prix and the first race which did not enter into since the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
2024 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
On his return after sitting out the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz qualified on the front row and won the 2024 Australian Grand Prix. It was the third win of Sainz’s career, making him the 67th driver to have won at least three Grands Prix during their time in Formula 1.
This was the first time Sainz qualified in the top four at the Australian Grand Prix, while his win was the first time he finished in the top seven at Albert Park. Prior to his 2024 win, 2018 was his most recent points-scoring appearance at the track.
This was the first time Sainz qualified on the front row since the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix and the first time he started from the front row since the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix.
Sainz was voted Driver of the Day for the second time in 2024. Sainz’s car was the only one to win the vote in the first three races of the year, with Ollie Bearman having won when driving the Ferrari in Saudi Arabia.
2024 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz finished in third place at the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix, maintaining his record of finishing on the podium in every race which he has started so far in 2024. This was Sainz’s first podium finish at Suzuka, making it the 16th different circuit at which he has finished in the top three. Sainz became the 41st different driver to have finished on the podium at Suzuka since it joined the F1 calendar in 1987.
2024 CHINESE GRAND PRIX
With seventh place in qualifying and fifth in the race, Carlos Sainz recorded both his worst qualifying result and worst race result of the year to date. Despite that, seventh and fifth represented Sainz’s best-ever qualifying and race results at the Chinese Grand Prix.
2024 MIAMI GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz set the third fastest lap time in Q3 at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. He is the only driver to have qualified in the top three at every running of the Miami Grand Prix to date. Sainz finished the race fourth on track but dropped to fifth in the final order after picking up a time penalty for causing a collision with Oscar Piastri.
2024 EMILIA ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz remains yet to out-qualify a team-mate at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. In the race, Sainz recorded a third consecutive fifth place finish. He became the only driver who has finished in the top five in every race which he has started in 2024.
2024 MONACO GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz qualified in third place for the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, maintaining his 100% Q3 appearance rate in Monte Carlo. He is one of five drivers with a 100% Q3 rate at Circuit de Monaco, along with Nico Robserg, Mark Webber, Michael Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya.
With his podium finish Sainz remained in a small group of drivers who have scored points on every appearance at Circuit de Monaco. Sainz became the 34th driver to record three podium finishes at the Monaco Grand Prix. This was Sainz’s first podium finish since he finished third at the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix.
2024 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX
For the first time since 2017, Carlos Sainz failed to reach Q3 at the Canadian Grand Prix. On Sunday, Sainz recorded his first retirement of the 2024 season after spinning out of the race. This was his first DNF since the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. With team-mate Charles Leclerc also retiring, this was Ferrari’s first point-less Grand Prix since the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, as well as the team’s first double DNF since the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
2024 SPANISH GRAND PRIX
Finishing sixth in the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz maintained his 100% points-finishing rate at his home event. He remained in a group of only four drivers who’ve scored points on every appearance at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya – the others being Alain Prost, Michael Andretti and Ralph Firman.
2024 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX
For the first time since the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz out-qualified team-mate Charles Leclerc at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix. Sainz recorded his fifth podium finish – and fourth third place finish – of the 2024 season. This was Sainz’s first top four finish at the Red Bull Ring. Sainz’s podium marked the first time that the driver starting fourth scored a top three finish at the Red Bull Ring since 2018, when Max Verstappen won the race having started there. Sainz became the first Spanish driver to finish on the podium in Austria in Formula 1’s history.
2024 BRITISH GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz set the fastest lap of the 2024 British Grand Prix – the first time he has done so at any race since the 2022 French Grand Prix. Sainz’s fastest lap was Ferrari’s 19th fastest lap at Silverstone, equalling the team’s own record for the most fastest laps at a single circuit. Ferrari have also set the fastest lap 19 times at Monza.
2024 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX
With sixth place in the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz scored points in Hungary for a ninth consecutive season. His DNF on his first appearance at the Hungaroring in 2015 remains his only point-less visit to the track.
2024 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz qualified eighth for the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix – his worst qualifying result since missing out on Q3 at the Canadian Grand Prix. This was Sainz’s worst qualifying result at Spa since 2021. He was out-qualified by team-mate Charles Leclerc for the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix.
Both Ferrari drivers scored points in the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, with Leclerc third and Sainz sixth. The points scored by Ferrari this weekend saw them become the first team to have scored 10,000 points in Formula 1 history.
2024 DUTCH GRAND PRIX
For only the second race in which he has competed this year, Carlos Sainz failed to qualify in the top ten at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix. He was also eliminated in Q2 at the Canadian Grand Prix. With Sainz qualifying 11th, Ferrari’s 100% Q3 appearance record at the Dutch Grand Prix came to an end. All ten teams have now seen at least one of their cars out in Q2 or Q1 at Zandvoort since its return to the calendar in 2021.
With Charles Leclerc finishing on the podium and Carlos Sainz finishing fifth, this was the first time that both Ferrari drivers finished in the top five at Zandvoort since the team secured a 1-2 finish in the 1983 Dutch Grand Prix. Having also finished fifth last year, Sainz was the only driver to record the same result in the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix as he did in the 2023 race.
2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz made his 80th start with Ferrari at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, moving him ahead of Jean Alesi and equalling Michele Alboreto as the driver to have made the ninth most starts with Ferrari in Formula 1.
Sainz raced in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix on his 30th birthday, finishing fourth. It was the best result that a driver has recorded on their birthday since Rubens Barrichello finished on the podium on his 32nd birthday at the 2004 Monaco Grand Prix. Sainz’s fourth place was his best result since his last podium finish, at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix. This was the third year in a row in which a Ferrari driver finished fourth at the Italian Grand Prix.
2024 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz will made his 81st start with Ferrari, moving him ahead of Michele Alboreto as the driver to have made the ninth most starts with Ferrari in Formula 1.
With third place in qualifying for the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Sainz recorded his best Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying result to date. He remains yet to out-qualify his team-mate in any of his eight appearances at Baku City Circuit.
Sainz was eliminated from the race in the closing stages following a collision with Sergio Perez. Both drivers recorded their first DNFs since the Canadian Grand Prix. Along with Lance Stroll, Sainz equalled Daniil Kvyat and Max Verstappen as the driver with the most retirements in Baku. Sainz’s DNF was the first for the driver starting third on the grid so far in 2024. Fifth became the only grid slot to score points at every Grand Prix to date in the 2024 season.
2024 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz became the 24th driver to make 200 Grand Prix starts at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix.
2024 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX
Qualifying third for the 2024 United States Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz out-qualified Charles Leclerc for the first time since the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Sainz finished in second place, behind his team-mate, in the race. Ferrari secured their first 1-2 finish at the United States Grand Prix since 2006, when Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa finished first and second at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 2024 became the first season since 2017 in which Ferrari recorded multiple 1-2 results in a single year.
This was Sainz’s first podium result since the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, as well as his first top two result since winning the 2024 Australian Grand Prix. 2024 is only the second time, after 2017, that both Ferrari drivers finished on the podium in a single race at COTA.
2024 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz won from pole position at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. Sainz secured his sixth pole position in Formula 1 – his first since the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. It was his first front row qualification since the 2024 Australian Grand Prix. He became the 12th different driver to take pole position in the last 13 races at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Sainz continued his record of qualifying in a better position than on his previous outing on all nine Mexico City Grand Prix appearances to date.
Sainz secured the fourth victory of his career at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. This was his second win of the 2024 season, after the Australian Grand Prix, making it the first season in which he has won multiple races. This was Ferrari’s third win in Mexico – and their first in 34 years. Sainz joins Jacky Ickx (in 1970) and Alain Prost (in 1990) on the list of Ferrari drivers who have won in Mexico. It was the first time Ferrari won consecutive races since the 2022 British and Austrian Grands Prix.
Sainz’s win made him the sixth different driver to have won multiple races in the 2024 season. 2024 became only the second season – after 1981 – in which as many as six different drivers have won multiple races in a year. This was Sainz’s first podium appearance at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Sainz was voted Driver of the Day for the seventh time in his career. It was the third time he won the accolade this season.
The 63 laps led by Sainz in the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix made Ferrari the first team to have led 16,000 laps in Formula 1 history.
2024 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX
Crashing out in Q2, Carlos Sainz qualified 14th for the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. This was his worst qualifying result since he qualified 16th for the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Sainz’s Q2 elimination marked only the second time that a Ferrari driver has failed to reach Q3 in Brazil and only the second time since 1988 that a Ferrari driver failed to qualify in the top ten at Interlagos. Giancarlo Fisichella – who qualified 20th in 2009 – is the only other Ferrari driver who has failed to reach Q3 here.
Sainz crashed out of the race, recording his first retirement at Interlagos since his maiden season in 2015 – a race in which he also started from the pit lane. This was Sainz’s third DNF of the season.
2024 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz qualified alongside George Russell on the front row for the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix. This was Sainz’s second front row qualification in the last three races. Sainz was the only driver to qualify in the same position for the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix as he did in 2023 – though he was demoted ten places on the grid at the 2023 race.
Sainz finished third in the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, recording the 26th podium finish of his career, tying the career totals of Ronnie Peterson and Eddie Irvine. This was Sainz’s third podium finish in the last four races, each one having been on a different step of the podium.
2024 QATAR GRAND PRIX
Finishing sixth, Carlos Sainz recorded his best Qatar Grand Prix result to date, having recorded a DNS and a seventh place finish on his previous two appearances. Sainz had equalled his best qualifying result at the track, having qualified seventh for the first time at Lusail Circuit since 2021.
2024 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX
Carlos Sainz made his 88th and final race start with Ferrari at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix before moving to Williams in 2025.
With third place in qualifying, Sainz recorded his best Abu Dhabi Grand Prix qualifying result to date. He went on to finish in second place, becoming the ninth driver to have recorded as many as 25 podiums with Ferrari. Sainz recorded his second podium finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, having finished in third place in 2021.
