In his final season at the Red Bull junior team, Daniil Kvyat was frequently out-qualified and out-raced by his team-mate. Here are the facts and statistics from Daniil Kvyat’s 2020 F1 season!
Daniil Kvyat’s year got off to a slow start, with him scoring only two points in the first seven races, compared to his team-mate’s eighteen. Pierre Gasly looked much more comfortable in the car all year – and the on-track results showed that.
Kvyat scored points on seven occasions this year, with a best result of fourth in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. In that race, Kvyat took advantage of fresh tyres to overtake cars in quick succession following the Safety Car restart. He qualified in the top ten on only four occasions in 2020, all four of those being in the final five races of the season. He was out-qualified by his team-mate for all but four races; though he set faster sector times than Gasly in 25 of the season’s 51 qualifying sectors.
AlphaTauri opted to not renew Kvyat’s contract for 2021, with Yuki Tsunoda taking his seat. The Russian leaves the sport having made 110 starts, picking up 202 points and finishing on the podium three times.

A STATISTIC FROM EVERY GRAND PRIX
Austria: Daniil Kvyat was the ninth and final retirement from the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix. From his team’s seven appearances at the Austrian Grand Prix, the 2019 race remains the only one in which both cars have reached the end of the race.
Styria: From his seven Formula 1 appearances in Austria, the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix was the first time that Daniil Kvyat has finished a race at the Red Bull Ring in a better position than where he started. He gained three positions from his starting place. It was his best result at the track, and the first time that he has scored a point Austria.
Hungary: Qualifying in seventeenth place, Daniil Kvyat became the first AlphaTauri (Toro Rosso) driver to be eliminated in Q1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix since Daniel Ricciardo, who qualified eighteenth in 2012. In six appearances at the Hungaroring, Kvyat has never out-qualified a team-mate at the circuit.
Britain: For the first time in his six British Grand Prix appearances, Daniil Kvyat failed to finish. It was also only the second time that the Russian driver failed to score at Silverstone.
70th Anniversary: On the weekend where Daniil Kvyat entered his 100th Grand Prix, he finished in tenth place for the third time in the last seven races. It was the first time that the driver starting sixteenth has scored at Silverstone since Kvyat’s then team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne did so at the 2014 British Grand Prix.
Spain: At the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix, Daniil Kvyat recorded his best qualifying result so far in 2020 with twelfth place. His team-mate Pierre Gasly was yet to qualify below twelfth so far in the season. Finishing the race in twelfth place, Kvyat failed to score at the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time since 2014. The Russian driver maintained his 100% finish record at the track.
Belgium: Daniil Kvyat recorded his best qualifying result of the 2020 season so far with eleventh place and went on to be one of six drivers to finish in the same position as he started. Though the Russian failed to score, he maintained his 100% finish record at the circuit.
Italy: While his team-mate won the race, Daniil Kvyat finished in ninth place, which made 2020 the first time since 2011 that the Red Bull junior team has scored with both cars at the Italian Grand Prix. It was also the first time that both of the team’s cars finished in the points since the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix, a race in which Pierre Gasly also finished on the podium.
Tuscany: Daniil Kvyat recorded his best result of the season so far at the Tuscan Grand Prix with seventh place. It was the first time he finished in the top seven since also finishing seventh at the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix.
Russia: Daniil Kvyat recorded his team’s best ever Russian Grand Prix result. Kvyat finished eighth, marking the first time he scored in his home race with the Red Bull junior team. His only other points here came with Red Bull, with whom he finished fifth in 2015.
Eifel: Though Daniil Kvyat was yet to reach Q3 this season, his thirteenth place in qualifying for the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix marked the first time since the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix that the Russian has failed to qualify in the top twelve.
Portugal: Daniil Kvyat lead the way for most Q2 exits in 2020, with his thirteenth place in qualifying for the Portuguese Grand Prix marking his tenth Q2 exit of the season. He had qualified in either eleventh, twelfth or thirteenth in every race since the Spanish Grand Prix. The Russian finished the race in nineteenth position; a position in which he had never previously finished.
Emilia Romagna: With fourth place, Daniil Kvyat recorded his best finish since his podium at the 2019 German Grand Prix. It was the seventh time that the Russian had finished in the top four in his career. Kvyat equalled the best result for his team at Imola in its entire history. Pierluigi Martini finished fourth for Minardi at the 1991 San Marino Grand Prix.
Turkey: In qualifying, Daniil Kvyat equalled his worst qualifying result of the season with seventeenth place. It was his third Q1 exit of the season, his first since the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. Kvyat finished ahead of his team-mate for only the third time in the races which both have finished this year.
Bahrain: Daniil Kvyat reached Q3 in Bahrain for the first time in his career and qualified tenth. He lost one position in the race, finishing outside of the points in eleventh place.
Sakhir: With sixth place, Daniil Kvyat qualified in the top six for the ninth time in his career. It was his best qualifying result since the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix and the first time he out-qualified Gasly since the Tuscan Grand Prix. In the race, Kvyat finished seventh, making the Sakhir Grand Prix the fourth successive F1 race in Bahrain in which the Red Bull junior team scored.
Abu Dhabi: Daniil Kvyat reached Q3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for the first time since 2015. His seventh place in qualifying was the second-best ever qualifying result at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for the Red Bull junior team. The best result for the team was fifth in 2014, also recorded by Kvyat.
