F1 Driver Form: Canadian Grand Prix

Verstappen has won the last two Canadian races from pole, Hamilton has seven Montreal wins, Ocon and Lelcerc have 100% points-scoring records in Canada and Stroll hopes to score on home soil for the fifth time. Here’s everything you need to know about each driver’s history at the Canadian Grand Prix!

🇳🇱 Max VERSTAPPEN

Max Verstappen has won the Canadian Grand Prix in each of the last two seasons and has scored points on five of his seven visits to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Verstappen has three podium finishes here in total, having first appeared on the Montreal podium with a third place finish in 2018.

All of Verstappen’s points-scoring appearances here have been top five results. Additionally, Verstappen finished 15th in 2015 and retired from the 2017 race.

Verstappen has reached Q3 at the Canadian Grand Prix five times and has taken pole position in each of the last two years. He has been eliminated in Q2 twice, in 2015 and 2019. Despite qualifying 11th in 2019, Verstappen lined up ninth on the grid.

In the five races that he’s finished at the track, Verstappen has never finished in a worse position than where he started from.

🇲🇽 Sergio PEREZ

On his first Canadian Grand Prix start in 2012, Sergio Perez finished on the podium in third place. He had entered the event in the previous season, but pulled out due to not being fit enough following his huge Monaco crash a few weeks prior.

Since 2012, points have been harder to find for Perez in Canada. He finished tenth in 2016 and fifth in 2017, but 2023 was the first time since then that he scored any points at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He finished sixth last year.

Perez recorded his second retirement at the track – the result of an engine failure – in 2022. His only other retirement at the Canadian Grand Prix came in 2014, as a result of a late race crash with Felipe Massa.

Perez has reached Q3 only three times in Canada, with a best qualifying result of eighth in 2017. That is one of only three occasions that Perez has out-qualified a team-mate here. He has not reached Q3 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve since 2018.

🇬🇧 Lewis HAMILTON

Lewis Hamilton took the first victory of his Formula 1 career at the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix. Since then he was won the event a further six times and also finished third in 2013, 2022 and 2023. The 2018 race is the only season that he has finished the event in a position outside of the top three.

However, Hamilton’s history in Montreal hasn’t always been rosy. He retired in 2008 after failing to spot a red light at the end of the pit-lane and crashing into the back of Kimi Raikkonen. He retired in 2011 after a collision with his McLaren team-mate Jenson Button and retired in 2014 as his Mercedes suffered engine problems.

Hamilton has taken pole at the Canadian Grand Prix six times, while 2011, 2018 and the last two races here are the only seasons in which he has not started from the front row. 2014 and 2018 are the only years that he has failed to out-qualify his team-mate in Montreal. Given his high qualifying positions, it’s no surprise that Hamilton has never gained more than one position from where he has started at this track.

2011, 2018, 2022 and 2023 are the only times in 14 visits to the circuit that Hamilton has not led a lap of the Canadian Grand Prix.

He had previously appeared at the track in 2019, where he finished 16th with Williams. He retired from the Grand Prix in 2023 with braking issues, having hit the barriers earlier in the race.

Russell reached Q3 at the circuit for the first time in 2022, qualifying in eighth place, and bettered his top qualifying result at the track in 2023 with fifth place. He had qualified on the back row in 2019. Despite being on the back row, that remains the only time he has out-qualified his team-mate at Circuit Gilles Villeneueve.

Despite never failing to score, 2019 is the only year in which Leclerc has reached Q3 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He was eliminated in Q2 on his other three visits. 2018 is the only time that Leclerc has out-qualified his team-mate at this circuit.

Leclerc has never lost a position from where he has started at the Canadian Grand Prix. He started 19th in 2022 and made up 14 positions to finish fifth.

🇪🇸 Carlos SAINZ

Carlos Sainz has scored four at the Canadian Grand Prix, recording his best result at the circuit so far in 2022 with the runner-up spot. He finished the 2022 race less than a second behind race winner Max Verstappen. Sainz also scored at the track with a ninth place finish in 2016, eighth in 2018 and fifth in 2023.

2017 is the only season that Sainz has failed to finish in Montreal, retiring on the first lap as a result of a collision with Felipe Massa.

Sainz has reached Q3 in all of the last four races at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He qualified third in 2022, marking his best qualifying result to date at the track and the only time he has qualified in the top seven at the Canadian Grand Prix. 2022 was the first time since 2015 that Sainz out-qualified his team-mate at the track. He out-qualified Leclerc again last year.

He recorded his best result to date at the track in the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, finishing 13th. He finished ninth on the road last year, but a post-race time penalty for “unsportsmanlike behaviour” demoted him four positions in the final order.

While Norris reached Q3 in 2019, he failed to progress past Q2 in 2022. He bettered his top qualifying result at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve last year, qualifying in seventh place.

🇪🇸 Fernando ALONSO

Fernando Alonso finished as runner-up in the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, recording his first podium finish in Montreal since 2013, where he also finished in second place. Alonso took his only Montreal win in 2006, and has recorded four top three results in total here, having also finished third in 2010. His ninth place result in 20222 was the first time since 2014 that Alonso has scored points in Canada.

Alonso has recorded no fewer than eight retirements at the Canadian Grand Prix. He has retired on three of his last five appearances at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Alonso took pole at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 2006, and lined up on the front row in 2007 and 2011. He recorded his third front row start since 2011 at the track in 2022 as the result of a wet qualifying session and lined up on the front row again last year.

2004 and 2007 are the only years in which the Spaniard has been out-qualified by his team-mate here. Alonso has never recorded a Q1 exit at the Canadian Grand Prix, but failed to reach Q3 in 2015, 2017 and 2018.

Of the races which he has finished, the 2013 and 2014 events are the only ones in which he has finished in a better position than where he started.

He retired on the first lap of his home race in 2018, before finishing ninth again in 2019. He scored another point at the track in 2022, with tenth place, and brought home yet another ninth place finish in 2023.

Despite scoring four times, Stroll has never reached Q3 at the circuit and 2023 was the first time he made it out of Q1 at the track. His best qualifying result to date here is 13th in 2023 – though he was demoted to 16th on the grid. He has never started in the top 15 grid positions at his home event.

2018 is the only occasion that the Canadian has out-qualified a team-mate at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He has gained at least seven positions in every Canadian Grand Prix he has finished so far.

He had finished 11th with Toro Rosso in the previous season, while the last two seasons have resulted in more finishes on the cusp of points for the Frenchman.

Gasly has been eliminated in Q1 on three occasions at the Canadian Grand Prix: in 2018, 2022 and 2023. He lined up fifth on the grid in 2019, a season which marked the first time that Gasly out-qualified his team-mate at the track; a feat he repeated in 2022.

He failed to finish on his first appearance at the event in 2019 after being involved in a first lap collision. His pace suffered throughout the race as a result and the Toro Rosso team opted to retire his car around ten laps from the end. He finished 13th with Williams in 2022.

Albon reached Q3 at the track for the first time in 2023, setting the tenth fastest lap time and lining up ninth on the final grid. He was eliminated in Q2 on both previous appearances at the Canadian Grand Prix, with a best qualifying result of 12th in 2022. A fourth place finish in 2019 brought an end to his podium streak, while he has finished in the lower half of the top ten in the last two seasons with Alfa Romeo.

Bottas has a 100% finish record at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with his first appearance in 2013 being the only time that he has failed to score.

2022 was the first time that Bottas failed to reach Q3 at the Canadian Grand Prix. His 11th place that year was the first time that he failed to qualify within the top seven. He qualified only 15th in 2023, recording a second Q2 exit.

Bottas’ only front row start so far at the track came in 2018. 2017, 2019 and 2022 are the only years that Bottas has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the event.

Kevin Magnussen scored points on his first Canadian Grand Prix appearance with a ninth place finish. He has not scored at the circuit since, but has a 100% finish rate. He has finished 17th on all of his last three appearances at the track.

Magnussen has reached Q3 here only twice, doing so for the first time in 2019. That year, he qualified tenth after crashing out at the end of Q2 and subsequently started from the pit lane. He went on to qualify fifth at the track in 2022.

Aside from 2022, 2018 and 2019 are the only seasons that Magnussen has out-qualified his team-mate here; though Romain Grosjean was unable to set a time following an engine blow up in 2018 and the Frenchman was prevented from setting a final lap time in Q2 in 2019 due to Magnussen’s crash.

From seven appearances, Magnussen has finished the Canadian Grand Prix in a worse position than where he started only three times – but all three times have been in his last four appearances at the track. He lost 12 positions over the course of the 2022 race.

This will be Nico Hulkenberg’s tenth appearance at the Canadian Grand Prix. The 2023 Montreal race marked the first time since 2013 that Hulkenberg appeared at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and failed to score. His six consecutive points-scoring races between 2014 and 2019 are the only times he has scored here, doing so with a top eight finish each time.

Hulkenberg’s best result at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is fifth place, recorded in 2014. He has failed to cross the finish line in Canada only once, in 2013. He finished only 15th last year.

Hulkenberg has never been eliminated in Q1 at the Canadian Grand Prix. He has reached Q3 on all of his last six appearances in Montreal, with a best result of second – which is where he qualified last year with Haas. Hulkenberg did not start from the front row however, as a grid penalty dropped him to fifth.

Hulkenberg has been out-qualified by a team-mate here only three times, with 2019 being the only such occasion in the last 11 years. Of the races he’s finished in Montreal, 2023 is the only one in which he has lost more than one position from where he started.
