Verstappen has won five of the last nine Red Bull Ring races, Norris’ points streak came to an end with his 2024 DNF and only two drivers have a 100% Q3 appearance rate. Here’s everything you need to know about each driver’s history at the Austrian Grand Prix!
🇳🇱 Max VERSTAPPEN
Max Verstappen has won five of the last nine races at the Red Bull Ring. In addition to his five wins at the track, Verstappen has finished on the podium a further three times, with second place in 2016 and 2022, plus third place in the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix.
A late race collision with Lando Norris when battling for the lead saw him finish fifth, ending a five-race streak of podium results at the track. Verstappen’s retirements in 2017 and 2020 are the only times that he has failed to score at the circuit.
Having reached Q3 on all eight appearances, the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix saw Verstappen qualify on the front row at the Red Bull Ring for the first time. However, he had already started from the front row in both the 2019 and 2020 Austrian Grands Prix, both times as the result of grid penalties for Lewis Hamilton.
Verstappen has taken pole position for all of the last five races at the Red Bull Ring. Having set the fastest time for both races in 2021, Verstappen secured his third pole at the venue at a result of the sprint race in 2022. Verstappen has not been out-qualified by his team-mate here since 2017.

🇳🇿 Liam LAWSON
Liam Lawson has race-winning experience at the Red Bull Ring, having taken victory at the track in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship in 2018 and having won the 2020 Formula 3 Sprint Race here. Lawson also won two races at the Red Bull Ring in DTM in 2021, a race weekend in which he also recorded his first pole position in the series. His most recent appearance at the track was in Formula 2 in 2022, where he retired from the Sprint Race and finished tenth in the Feature Race.
🇬🇧 Lando NORRIS
Lando Norris recorded his maiden podium finish at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix and went on to finish on the podium again here at the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix. Norris held a 100% points-scoring record at the Red Bull Ring until 2024, picking up points and not finishing outside of the top seven on any of his first seven appearances at the track.
In 2024, Norris was leading the race when contact with Max Verstappen led to him recording his first retirement at the track.
The 2020 Styrian Grand Prix is the only time that Norris has been out-qualified by his team-mate at the Red Bull Ring. He qualified in the top six on all of his first five appearances at the track but failed to reach Q2 and qualified 11th in 2022. His best qualifying result here is second, which he recorded at both the 2021 and 2024 Austrian Grands Prix. He qualified fourth for the third time at the track in 2023.
Norris previously competed at the Red Bull Ring in both Formula 3 and Formula 2. In 2017, he finished a best of second place in the second of the Formula 3 event’s three races. In 2018, Norris took another second place at the track in the F2 Feature Race, while he finished 11th in the Sprint Race.

🇦🇺 Oscar PIASTRI
Oscar Piastri reached Q2 at the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix, qualifying in 13th position. He lost places over the course of the Grand Prix and crossed the finish line only 16th. His team-mate finished 12 places ahead, but this was largely due to the benefit of significant upgrades to Lando Norris’ car which were not on Piastri’s.
In 2024, Piastri benefited from his team-mate’s misfortune to finish as runner-up in the Austrian Grand Prix, less than two seconds behind the race winner. He started the race seventh but made up a series of positions during the race, including Carlos Sainz in the latter stages to secure the runner-up spot. Piastri also finished runner-up in the Saturday Sprint race, having started third on the grid.
Piastri raced at the Red Bull Ring in both Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula 3. He won on his Formula 3 debut here in 2020 and finished in the top eight in the other three races he competed in at the circuit that year.

🇬🇧 Lewis HAMILTON
Lewis Hamilton’s win at the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix marked the first time he had stood on the podium at the Red Bull Ring since winning the 2016 Austrian Grand Prix. He has finished in the top five on all but two visits to the circuit: in 2018 when he retired from the race and in 2023 he finished eighth. He recorded his sixth podium finish at the circuit in 2022, finishing third.
Hamilton took pole for the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix by over a second. It was his first pole at the circuit since 2016 and his third here in total. It remains his last pole at the circuit, having not qualified on the front row since.
Hamilton holds a 100% Q3 appearance rate at the Red Bull Ring. He crashed out during Q3 in 2022, qualifying eighth – his worst qualifying result at the track since also spinning out in Q3 in 2014 and qualifying ninth.
The 2014, 2020, 2022 and 2024 Austrian Grands Prix are the only races at the track in which Hamilton has finished in a better position than where he started, with the 2014 and 2022 races being the only ones in which he has gained more than one place.

🇲🇨 Charles LECLERC
Charles Leclerc took his first Red Bull Ring victory at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix. Leclerc had led 58 laps of the 2019 Austrian Grand Prix but ultimately finished second after a late race battle with Max Verstappen.
He finished as runner-up in the Austrian Grand Prix for a second successive year in 2020 and finished as runner-up again to Verstappen at the track in 2023.
Leclerc’s 100% point scoring rate at the Red Bull Ring came to an end at the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix as he collided with Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel. His 11th place finish in 2024 was only the second time he failed to pick up a point in his nine appearances at the track.
Leclerc took pole for the 2019 race, and he has made five other Q3 appearances at the circuit. He qualified on the front row here in both 2022 and 2023.

🇬🇧 George RUSSELL
George Russell took an unexpected victory in the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, taking the win as race leaders Lando Norris and Max Verstappen collided. Russell’s win marked his first podium result at the track as well as the third consecutive season in which he had scored points in the Austrian Grand Prix, having finished fourth in 2022 and seventh in 2023.
Russell did not score on any of his first five visits to the Red Bull Ring in F1, recording retirements in both the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix and the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix. He has also scored points here in Sprint races, finishing fourth in 2022, eighth in 2023 and fourth again in 2024.
Russell recorded the first Q2 appearance of his career at the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix and went on to reach Q3 at the Austrian Grand Prix in both 2021 and 2022. Despite crashing out in Q3, he recorded his best qualifying result at the circuit to date in 2022, finishing fourth. He was out in Q2 in 2023 but bettered his best qualifying result at the track, qualifying third.
The 2023 Austrian Grand Prix is the only time that Russell has been out-qualified by a team-mate on his eight appearances at the Red Bull Ring.
Russell competed at the Red Bull Ring in Formula 3 in 2015 and 2016, GP3 in 2017 and Formula 2 in 2018. He won the first races of both the GP3 and Formula 2 weekends and took further podium appearances here in Formula 3 in 2016 and in the Formula 2 Sprint Race in 2019.

🇮🇹 Kimi ANTONELLI
Kimi Antonelli raced at the Red Bull Ring in the Italian F4 Championship in 2021 and 2022, taking victory in the second of the three races in 2022. In 2023, in the Formula Regional European Championship, Antonelli recorded two top four results, including a third place finish in the second race. In F2 in 2024, Antonelli failed to pick up any points, with a best result of 13th in the Feature Race.
🇪🇸 Fernando ALONSO
Fernando Alonso has made 12 appearances at the Red Bull Ring, but has finished only seven times. His best result here is fifth – which he first recorded in 2014 and equalled at the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix.
From his first six appearances at the track, Alonso failed to finish on five occasions. 2024 – when he finished 18th – was the first time since his last DNF at the track in 2017 that Alonso did not score a point, ending a streak of five consecutive points-scoring races.
Alonso has reached Q3 four times at the Red Bull Ring. He qualified fourth with Ferrari in 2014, ninth with Alpine at the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix and seventh with Aston Martin in 2023. Though he reached Q3 in 2022, he started 20th on the grid after failing to start the Sprint race.
Alonso has started from the back row here three times: in 2003, 2015 and 2022. He also started from the pit lane in 2018. Alonso gained 12 positions from his pit lane start and made up nine positions from the back row in the 2022 race.

Lance Stroll recorded his best Red Bull Ring result at the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix, with seventh place. From his ten appearances here, he has scored on three other outings but has never finished in the top six. He scored his first points here with tenth place in 2017, finished eighth in 2021 Styrian Grand Prix and finished ninth in the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix.
Stroll reached Q3 at both of 2021’s races at the Red Bull Ring and made two more Q3 appearances at the 2020 and 2023 Austrian Grands Prix. His best qualifying position here is sixth, recorded in 2023. He recorded his fourth Q1 exit at the track in 2024. 🇫🇷 Pierre GASLY
From his nine F1 appearances in Austria, Pierre Gasly has scored five times. He recorded seventh place finishes in both the 2019 and 2020 Austrian Grands Prix before going on to finish ninth in the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix and finishing tenth in both 2023 and 2024.
Gasly held a 100% finishing record at the circuit until 2021, when he retired from the Styrian Grand Prix. Other than DNFs, his worst result here is 15th place, which he recorded for the second time in 2022.
Gasly has reached Q3 at the track on five occasions, with a best qualifying result of sixth, which is where he qualified for both of 2021’s races at the venue. The 2019 and 2024 Austrian Grands Prix are the only races at the circuit in which he has been out-qualified by his team-mate.
Prior to Formula 1, Gasly raced here in GP2 in 2015 and 2016. His best result in that series here was sixth place in the 2015 Sprint Race.

🇦🇺 Jack DOOHAN
Jack Doohan has past experience at the Red Bull Ring, having raced here in the Euroformula Open Championship, Formula 3 and Formula 2. He recorded podium finishes in all three categories at the track but has never stood on the top step. His best result here is second place, recorded in the Euroformula Open Championship in 2019.
🇫🇷 Esteban OCON
Esteban Ocon has scored on four of his nine appearances at the Red Bull Ring, recording his best result to date at the track in 2022 with a fifth place finish. It remains the last time he has scored points in a Grand Prix at the track. Ocon failed to score in the three races at the track prior to 2022, recording retirements in both the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix and the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix.
The Frenchman’s best qualifying result here is fifth, which he recorded at the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix. 2017, 2022 and 2024 are the only other times he has reached Q3 here – and he qualified in the top six as a result of the sprint race in 2022. Ocon was eliminated in Q1 at both of 2021’s races at the venue.
Of the six races he has finished at the circuit, the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix was the first in which Ocon finished in a worse position than where he started. He lost two positions again in the 2024 race.

🇬🇧 Ollie BEARMAN
Ollie Bearman has plenty of experience at the Red Bull Ring. He has raced here in Formula 4, Italian Formula 4, Formula 3 and Formula 2. Of the four series, F3 is the only one in which he has not won when racing at the track – though he did finish on the podium in the 2022 Feature Race. Most recently, Bearman took victory in the Sprint race of the 2024 F2 weekend.
🇯🇵 Yuki TSUNODA
Yuki Tsunoda reached Q3 at both Red Bull Ring races in 2021, with a best qualifying position of seventh for the Austrian Grand Prix. He scored a point in the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix – the only point he has scored to date at the track – with a tenth place finish and came home 12th in the Austrian Grand Prix.
In 2022, Tsunoda reached Q2 on Friday but qualified only 17th as a result of the F1 Sprint. He finished the Grand Prix only 16th. He recorded his worst result to date at the track in 2023, finishing a lowly 19th – last of the drivers who reached the chequered flag. He was eliminated in Q1 at the Red Bull Ring for the first time, qualifying 16th. He did at least out-qualify his team-mate at the venue for the first time.
2024 was another point-less visit to the Red Bull Ring for Tsunoda. After finishing 13th in the Saturday Sprint race, he came home 14th in the Grand Prix.
Tsunoda previously raced at the Red Bull Ring in Formula 3 and Formula 2. From the six races in which he has competed at the track, the F2 Feature Race over the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix weekend is the only one in which Tsunoda has scored. He finished as runner-up in that race.

🇫🇷 Isack HADJAR
Isack Hadjar has raced at the Red Bull Ring in the Formula Regional European Championship, Formula 3 and Formula 2. After winning the F3 Feature Race here in 2022, Hadjar scored podium finishes in the F2 Sprint Race in 2023 – in which he qualified 21st but gambled on slick tyres on a drying track to move up the field – and the Feature Race in 2024, finishing third in both races.
🇪🇸 Carlos SAINZ
Carlos Sainz recorded his first Austrian Grand Prix podium finish in 2024, finishing in third place. It was his eighth points-scoring appearance at the Red Bull Ring, having a previous best result of fifth – recorded in the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix with McLaren and the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix with Ferrari, both of which formed part of a five-race scoring streak for the Spaniard at the track.
Sainz has recorded three DNFs at the track to date, in 2015, 2017 and 2022. His 2022 Austrian Grand Prix came to a fiery end as the Spaniard recorded his third retirement at the track.
Although the 2024 races was he first time Sainz finished in the top four in a Grand Prix in Austria, he finished third in the 2023 Sprint event at the circuit.
Sainz has reached Q3 at the track seven times, with a best qualifying result of third. He’s qualified third here three times: at the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix, as a result of the sprint race in 2022 and at the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix. He failed to reach Q3 in either of 2021’s races at the track.

🇩🇪 Nico HULKENBERG
Nico Hulkenberg’s sixth place finish at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix marked his first Sunday points at the Red Bull Ring since 2015. His best result here is sixth place, recorded in both of the two aforementioned seasons plus the 2023 Sprint race.
From his eight previous appearances, 2014 is the only other time that Hulkenberg scored at the Red Bull Ring, coming home in ninth place. From his other five appearances, Hulkenberg failed to finish in 2016, 2018 and 2023 and finished 13th on his two other appearances.
Despite his low points rate, Hulkenberg has never qualified outside of the top 12. He has reached Q3 here six times – including in each of the last two seasons – with a best qualifying result of third in 2016. That became a front row start on the final grid. 2023 was the first time he reached Q3 at the Austrian Grand Prix since 2018.
2018 is the only season in which Hulkenberg has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the Austrian Grand Prix. 2016, 2019 and 2024 – the latter in which he gained a best of three places – are the only seasons in which Hulkenberg has finished in a better position than where he started at the Red Bull Ring.
