F1 Driver Form: British Grand Prix at Silverstone

Hamilton has won his home race eight times, Sainz recorded his maiden F1 win at Silverstone in 2022 and six current drivers have a 100% finish rate at the track. Here’s everything you need to know about each driver’s history at the British Grand Prix!

🇳🇱 Max VERSTAPPEN

Max Verstappen secured his first British Grand Prix in 2023 – but it was not his first win at Silverstone. Verstappen previously won at the circuit in 2020’s one-off 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. Aside from his wins, Verstappen has two further podium finishes at Silverstone, having finished as runner-up in both the 2016 and 2020 British Grands Prix.

In 2021, Verstappen’s British Grand Prix came to a premature – and controversial – end, following a collision with Lewis Hamilton on the opening lap. More contact followed in the opening stages of the 2022 race, with car damage preventing him from finishing any higher than seventh.

Verstappen suffered further retirements in 2015 and 2018, but finished in the top five on all of his five finishes at the track up to 2022.

The Red Bull driver took pole position at Silverstone for the first time in 2021 as a result of Sprint Qualifying, qualifying on the front row here for the first time. He has qualified on the front row every year since then, setting the fastest qualifying time at Silverstone for the first time in 2023.

2015, when he qualified 13th, is the only occasion on which he has not reached Q3 at the circuit – as well as the only time that he has not qualified in the top five. 2015 is also the only time he has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the track.

🇲🇽 Sergio PEREZ

Sergio Perez returned to Silverstone in 2021 for the first time since 2019, having missed both races in 2020 after testing positive for coronavirus. He failed to score in either the 2019 or 2021 races, but scored his first podium finish at Silverstone in 2022, finishing as runner-up to Carlos Sainz.

His podium was his sixth top ten result in total at the track and the first time that he finished in the top five. He went on to record his third top six finish at the track in 2023. Perez recorded DNFs in 2012 and 2013. He was out following a collision with Pastor Maldonado in 2012, and fell victim to Pirelli’s tyre failures at the circuit in 2013.

Perez has reached Q3 only four times at Silverstone, qualifying in seventh in both 2014 and 2017 before setting the fifth fastest time in 2021. He recorded his best qualifying result to date at the track in 2022 with fourth place. 2023 marked his first Q1 exit at the track.

In 2021, Perez ultimately qualified last for last year’s British Grand Prix, being the only retiree from the inaugural Sprint Qualifying event. Perez has out-qualified his team-mate here only twice; in 2017 and 2019.

🇬🇧 Lewis HAMILTON

Lewis Hamilton took his eighth home victory at the 2021 British Grand Prix. In the 11 Silverstone races since 2014, there are just four which Hamilton has not won. In those four races, he finished on the podium – meaning that the 2013 race is the last Silverstone race in which Hamilton did not finish in the top three. He has finished in the third place in each of the last two seasons.

Hamilton has never failed to finish at the track, with a worst result of 16th in 2009. Hamilton’s qualifying record at Silverstone is just as impressive, with 2009 again being the only year that he has failed to qualify in the top ten. His fifth place in qualifying in 2022 was the first time he failed to qualify on the front row at the circuit since 2014, while seventh in 2023 was his first start outside of the top six on the grid since 2012.

A run of four successive pole positions was ended by his team-mate in 2019 by the narrowest of margins. He last took pole here at the 2020 British Grand Prix. Since 2012, the 2018 and 2023 British Grands Prix are the only Silverstone races in which Hamilton has not led a lap.

🇬🇧 George RUSSELL

George Russell held a 100% finish rate at Silverstone until 2022, when he was out at the first corner. Despite his 100% finish rate prior to the 2022 race, his fifth place finish in the 2023 British Grand Prix marked the first time Russell picked up any points at him home event. Before that, Russell had a best finishing position of 12th at Silverstone, recorded in the 2020 and 2021 British Grands Prix. He finished 14th in 2019 and 18th in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020.

After qualifying on the back row in 2019, Russell reached Q2 and qualified in 15th in both of 2020’s races at the track. However, he started at the back for the British Grand Prix after failing to slow for yellow flags during the qualifying session.

Russell reached Q3 in 2021, setting the eighth fastest time. He went on to qualify ninth as a result of Sprint Qualifying but then started 12th on the grid following a three-place penalty for a collision with Carlos Sainz in the sprint race. Russell has bettwered his best qualifying result at the track in each of his last three visits, recording his best qualifying result at Silverstone to date with sixth place in 2023.

Prior to Formula 1, in F3 in 2015, Russell won the second race of the Silverstone meeting. He won the first of the two races in the GP3 series at the track in 2017, and finished fourth in the second. In 2018, Russell finished as runner-up in both the F2 Feature and Sprint Races at the Silverstone Circuit.

🇲🇨 Charles LECLERC

Charles Leclerc very nearly won the 2021 British Grand Prix, leading for much of the race. He ultimately finished in second place, recording his best result of the 2021 season. It was his third podium result at the British Grand Prix, having finished third in both 2020 and 2021, and it remains his best result at Silverstone to date.

Leclerc narrowly missed out on another podium result at the track in 2022, finishing in fourth place. He finished ninth last year.

Leclerc’s first British Grand Prix appearance in 2018 did not go to plan, as he retired following a botched pit-stop. He had been performing well up until that point, reaching Q3 on Saturday and qualifying in ninth place. It remains the only time he has not scored in his seven Silverstone appearances.

Leclerc has a 100% Q3 appearance rate at the circuit, with a best qualifying result of third. He qualified third in both 2019 and 2022. 2022, when team-mate Carlos Sainz took pole position, was the first time he has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the circuit.

In 2015, Leclerc raced at Silverstone in Formula 3, where he took a win in the third race. Leclerc appeared in Free Practice 1 for the 2016 British Grand Prix with the Haas team and finished on the podium in GP3 in both races that weekend. In 2017, he won the F2 Feature Race here.

🇪🇸 Carlos SAINZ

Carlos Sainz became Formula 1’s newest winner at the 2022 British Grand Prix, taking his maiden win from pole position. From ten Silverstone appearances, Sainz has scored on only five occasions. His 2022 win remains his only top five finish at the track, with a second-best result of sixth in the 2019 and 2021 British Grands Prix.

His only other points scoring appearances came in 2016, when he finished eighth and 2023, when he finished tenth. Sainz has recorded three retirements here, his most recent being in 2018.

Sainz has reached Q3 on six occasions at Silverstone, but his pole was only the second time in the previous seven Silverstone races that he qualified in the top ten. His 2022 pole was the first time he qualified in the top six at the circuit, as well as the first time he out-qualified his team-mate at Silverstone since 2016. He qualified fifth, one position behind his team-mate, in 2023.

The 2019 and 2021 British Grands Prix are the only Silverstone races in which Sainz has gained positions from where he has started at the circuit, while his win from pole in 2022 was the first time he finished in the same position from which he had started.

🇬🇧 Lando NORRIS

At the 2023 British Grand Prix, Lando Norris recorded his first front row start at his home race and his first podium finish at Silverstone, finishing as runner-up to Max Verstappen.

After finishing just outside of the points on his home Grand Prix debut in 2019, Norris scored in both races at Silverstone in 2020, recording a best result of fifth at the British Grand Prix. He finished ninth in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. He bettered that with fourth place in 2021 and maintained his points-scoring streak at Silverstone in 2022 with a sixth place finish.

Norris has reached Q3 on all six appearances at Silverstone. Aside from his front row last year, he has two other top five qualifications here, with fifth place at both the 2020 and 2021 British Grands Prix. He is yet to be out-qualified by his team-mate here.

Norris has previously won at Silverstone, taking victory in the first race of the F3 meeting at the track in 2017. In 2018, Norris competed here in F2, finishing tenth in the Feature Race and taking a podium finish with third in the Sprint Race.

Piastri has plenty of past experience at Silverstone. He won both races in the Formula Renault Eurocup meeting at the track in 2019, finished on the podium here in Formula 3 in 2020 and secured another podium – and two other top six finishes – in Formula 2 at the track in 2021.

🇪🇸 Fernando ALONSO

Fernando Alonso has won the British Grand Prix twice – in 2006 and 2011. He has four further podium finishes at Silverstone, his latest being a third place finish with Ferrari in 2013.

2003 and 2017 are the only years in which Alonso has retired from the British Grand Prix. He has scored points here on his last four visits, with his fifth place in 2022 being his best result at the track since his last Silverstone podium in 2013.

Alonso has taken three pole positions at Silverstone – in 2005, 2006 and 2012. He reached Q3 at the circuit in 2022 for the first time since 2016, qualifying seventh and reached Q3 once more in 2023. He also qualified seventh in 2021, hut that was a result of Sprint Qualifying.

From his last 14 British Grand Prix outings, 2017 is the only year in which Alonso was out-qualified by his team-mate.

🇨🇦 Lance STROLL

Lance Stroll scored in all three F1 races at Silverstone in 2020 and 2021, with a best result of sixth place in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. Those are his only points-scoring races here. He failed to score in his first three appearances at the circuit, but holds a 100% finish record here. He finished just outside of the points, in 11th, in 2022 and came home 14th last year.

Stroll reached Q3 at the venue for the first time in 2020, qualifying in sixth for both the British and 70th Anniversary Grands Prix. It was the first time he was not eliminated in Q1 at the track, as well as the first time he out-qualified his team-mate here – though he was helped somewhat by Nico Hulkenberg deputising with short notice.

Stroll was out in Q2 in 2021, qualifying six positions behind team-mate Sebastian Vettel, and was eliminated in Q1 in 2022, setting the slowest qualifying lap time. He reached Q2 last year.

Esteban Ocon scored on all of his first five appearances at Silverstone, recording his best result so far at the track in the 2020 British Grand Prix, with sixth place. His points record came to an end in 2022 as he retired from the race and he failed to finish again in 2023.

The 70th Anniversary Grand Prix marked the first time that Ocon failed to reach Q3 at the circuit, qualifying in 11th place. In that session, he also picked up a three place grid penalty for impeding another driver. He has not reached Q3 here since 2020, though he did qualify in the top ten in 2021 thanks to gaining positions in the Saturday sprint race.

Ocon’s best qualifying result at Silverstone is eighth, recorded on his first F1 visit to the track in 2017. 2018 is the only year in which Ocon has out-qualified his team-mate at Silverstone.

He recorded what was at the time a career-best fourth place at the 2019 British Grand Prix, before finishing seventh with AlphaTauri at the 2020 British Grand Prix. Gasly held a 100% finish rate at the track until 2022, when his car came to a halt on the old pit straight. He failed to finish once again in 2023.

The Frenchman has reached Q3 here three times, qualifying in fifth for the 2019 race, seventh at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix and tenth at the 2023 British Grand Prix. He has been eliminated in Q2 on every other outing. He’s not been out-qualified by a team-mate at the track since 2019.

Bottas’s 100% finish rate at Silverstone came to an end in 2022 as he retired from the race on his first appearance at the track with Alfa Romeo. His 2021 podium remains the last time he scored at Silverstone, having finished only 12th in 2023. The Finn also failed to score in the 2013, 2016 and 2020 British Grands Prix. He suffered a puncture in the late stages of the 2020 event.

Bottas qualified in 17th in both 2013 and 2014, but reached Q3 in every race at the track between 2015 and 2021, taking his first pole position at the track by a small margin in 2019. He also took pole for the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020. He was eliminated in Q2 in both 2022 and 2023.

After being disqualified from qualifying and starting from the back of the grid, 2023 was the first time Bottas finished a Silverstone race in a better position than where he started since 2017.

🇨🇳 ZHOU Guanyu

Zhou Guanyu’s British Grand Prix debut in 2022 ended in disaster as he crashed at Turn 1, his Alfa Romeo flipping over and travelling upside down along the track before coming to stop between the catch-fencing and the barriers. He had reached Q3 in the rain on Saturday, out-qualifying his team-mate and lining up ninth on the grid.

Zhou had a better time in 2023’s Silverstone race, though he failed to score any points. He finished 15th having been eliminated in Q1 and started 17th on the grid.

Before his Formula 1 career began, Zhou had most recently raced at Silverstone in Formula 2. In 2021, Zhou failed to score in either Sprint Race at the circuit, but won the Feature Race. In 2020, Zhou finished as runner-up in the first of four races at the track. He finished in the top ten in all four races.

There have been only three occasions from Nico Hulkenberg’s 12 appearances at Silverstone that he has failed to score. In 2020, he filled in at Racing Point for the coronavirus-struck Sergio Perez. While Hulkenberg disappointingly failed to start the 2020 British Grand Prix, he finished seventh in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix one week later.

Hulkenberg’s DNS in 2020 was only the second time he failed to finish in the top ten here, following a 12th place finish in 2012. He failed to score last year, too, finishing 13th. His best result at the track is sixth, recorded in both the 2017 and 2018 British Grands Prix.

Hulkenberg impressively qualified third at Silverstone for the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix – his best qualifying result at the track to date. He also qualified on the second row in 2014. There have been five occasions that Hulkenberg has failed to reach Q3 at Silverstone – including two 11th place qualifications – but he has never been eliminated in Q1 here.

Hulkenberg has been out-qualified by his team-mate here only three times, including in his maiden season and at the 2020 British Grand Prix, when he was called up late to replace Perez.
