Just two drivers have a 100% Q3 appearance rate at the Hungaroring, Gasly has a 100% points scoring rate at the circuit and Raikkonen has never finished lower than where he started in all of his thirteen finishes at the track. Here’s everything you need to know about each driver’s Hungarian Grand Prix history!
?? Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton has an excellent record in Hungary with six previous victories. Aside from his six wins, 2014 is the only other time he’s finished on the podium at the track, scoring a third place finish after a pit-lane start. 2010 is the only season that Hamilton has failed to score at the track. He retired that year with gearbox problems. Aside from that he’s never finished outside of the top six in his twelve Hungarian Grand Prix appearances. Hamilton has taken pole position five times at the track and also started from pole in 2007 following a penalty for team-mate Fernando Alonso. Hamilton has started on the front row on nine occasions at the circuit. The only time that Hamilton has failed to reach Q3 here was in 2014 when his car caught fire before he could set a lap time. That’s one of only four occasions that Hamilton has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the track. 2010, 2015 and 2017 are the only years that Hamilton hasn’t led a lap of the race.
?? Valtteri Bottas
Valtteri Bottas has scored one podium finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with a third place finish in 2017. He’s failed to score twice here, with a DNF in 2013 and a thirteenth place finish in 2015. Bottas has qualified in the top ten on all but one occasion in Hungary, in 2013 when he qualified sixteenth. He qualified on the front row here for the first time last year. Last year marked only the second time that the Finn has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the Hungaroring. 2016 is the only season that Bottas has gained a position from where he started at this track.
?? Sebastian Vettel
Sebastian Vettel has taken victory twice at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He won both races here with Ferrari, in 2015 and 2017. He’s recorded a further four podium finishes at the track, with two third places and two runner-up spots, including his second place in last year’s race. Vettel has scored here every season since 2010. His first three visits to the track were point-less, with a sixteenth place in 2007 and two DNFs in the next two years. Vettel has taken three pole positions here, most recently in 2017, and has started from the front row on six occasions. The only times he’s failed to qualify in the top ten at the track were in 2007, when he was out in Q1, and in 2008, when he was eliminated in Q2. 2007 and 2018 are the only seasons were Vettel has been out-qualified by his team-mate.
?? Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc is yet to complete a racing lap at the Hungarian Grand Prix, having retired following first lap contact in 2018. Leclerc failed to beat his team-mate in qualifying and was eliminated in Q1, lining up sixteenth on the grid.
?? Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen ended his 100% finish record at the Hungaroring with a DNF in 2018. Before that, he’d never failed to finish in the top five at the circuit. His best finish here is fourth for Toro Rosso in 2015. Verstappen has reached Q3 on all four of his Hungarian Grand Prix appearances, qualifying a best of fourth in 2016. 2016 is the only season that the Dutchman has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the track.
?? Pierre Gasly
On his first F1 appearance at the Hungaroring last year, Pierre Gasly impressed with a sixth place finish. He finished the race where he started it from, having reached Q3 and beaten his team-mate in the wet qualifying session.
?? Daniel Ricciardo
From his eight appearances at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo has scored four times, three times with podium finishes. The first time he scored points at the track was in 2014, when he won the race. He then scored two third place finishes in 2015 and 2016. The only other time he’s scored here was last year, when he finished in fourth place. Ricciardo has one DNF at the Hungaroring, the result of being taken out by his team-mate on the first lap in 2017. Last season marked the first time Ricciardo has failed to reach Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix since 2012. He has a best qualifying position of third here, from 2016. 2013 is the only season where Ricciardo has finished the race in a lower position than where he started it.
?? Nico Hulkenberg
Nico Hulkenberg has scored only twice in his eight visits to the Hungarian Grand Prix. He’s yet to better his sixth position from his first appearance at the event in 2010. The only other time he has scored here was in 2016, when he finished tenth. Hulkenberg has recorded three DNFs at the track, in 2014, 2015 and 2017. The German has never recorded a Q1 elimination at the track and has missed out on Q3 on only three occasions. His best qualifying position here is seventh, which he recorded in 2017 – though he started twelfth due to a penalty. Hulkenberg has never started the Hungarian Grand Prix from higher than ninth on the grid. 2018 marked the first time that he had been out-qualified by a team-mate here.
?? Romain Grosjean
Romain Grosjean has scored points four times in his seven appearances at the Hungarian Grand Prix. His best finish here is third, which he scored with Lotus in 2012. The Frenchman has had two retirements at the circuit, in 2014 and 2017. Grosjean has had one front row start at the Hungaroring – he qualified second in 2012. It’s one of four times that he’s reached Q3 at the track. Last season, he reached Q3 at the circuit for the first time since 2015. He’s never been eliminated in Q1 here. 2018 marked the first time Grosjean has been out-qualified by a team-mate in Hungary. He’s led five laps here – two in 2012 and three in 2013.
?? Kevin Magnussen
Kevin Magnussen scored points at the Hungarian Grand Prix for the first time in 2018 with a seventh place finish. While he has a 100% finish rate at the track, Magnussen hadn’t finished higher than twelfth before last year. The Dane has reached Q3 twice at the circuit, in 2014 and 2018. His best qualifying here came last year with ninth on the grid. Last season was also the first time Magnussen has beaten his team-mate in qualifying at the circuit. Magnussen has gained positions from where he started in all four Hungarian Grands Prix which he’s raced in.
?? Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz has scored points on three of his four appearances at the Hungaroring. The only time he has failed to score at the track was on his first appearance in 2015 when he failed to finish the race. He has a best result of seventh here, scored with Toro Rosso in 2017. Likewise, Sainz’s debut season is the only time he’s missed out on Q3 at the circuit. The Spaniard recorded his best qualifying result at the track last year with fifth on the grid – which is also the joint-best qualifying result of his entire career. Max Verstappen is the only team-mate to have out-qualified Sainz at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
?? Lando Norris
Lando Norris has previously competed at the Hungaroring in Formula 3 and Formula 2. In 2017, he completed all three races of the F3 meeting at the track, finishing a best of third at the final race. In F2 last year, Norris finished as runner-up in the Feature Race and in fourth place in the Sprint Race.
?? Sergio Perez
Sergio Perez has scored only twice from his eight appearances at the Hungarian Grand Prix. His best finish here is eighth place in 2017, while his ninth place finish with McLaren in 2013 is the only other time he’s scored here. Perez has recorded two DNFs here, in consecutive years; 2014 and 2015. The Mexican has not appeared in Q3 at the Hungaroring since 2013. 2013 is the season in which he recorded his best qualifying result with ninth on the grid. 2011 is the only other season that Perez has reached Q3 here. He recorded his first Q1 elimination at the track last year. Perez has been out-qualified by his team-mate at the track in all of the last five seasons. He’s gained positions from his starting place in all of the last three Hungarian Grands Prix, gaining a maximum of five places in 2017.
?? Lance Stroll
Lance Stroll is yet to score at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with a best finishing position of fourteenth in 2017. He finished seventeenth last year. The Canadian reached Q2 last year, with a best qualifying result at the track of fifteenth – though he started from the pit-lane. Stroll is yet to be beaten by a team-mate in qualifying at the track, though he was helped in 2017 by Paul di Resta substituting for Felipe Massa at short notice. Stroll has finished the race three positions higher than where he started it on both of his appearances so far.
?? Kimi Raikkonen
Kimi Raikkonen has finished on the podium nine times at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with one win in 2005. He’s finished as runner-up here six times, most recently in 2017. The Finn has recorded a podium result at the circuit in each of the last two seasons, finishing in third place last year. Raikkonen has recorded 3 DNFs at the circuit, in 2004, 2006 and 2015. His seventh place on his first appearance at the track is the only time he’s finished the race and not scored points. Raikkonen has taken pole once at the Hungaroring, back in 2006. He also started from the front row in 2017. Since 2006 there have been just two occasions where he has failed to qualify in the top ten at the track. He was eliminated in Q1 in 2014 and in Q2 in 2016. Raikkonen hasn’t out-qualified a team-mate on pace at this circuit since 2007. Impressively, Kimi has never finished the Grand Prix in a position lower than where he started it. The last two seasons are the only times that Raikkonen has failed to gain a position, finishing where he started on each occasion.
?? Antonio Giovinazzi
Antonio Giovinazzi has raced at the Hungaroring in two categories. He competed here in F3 in 2014, finishing a best of fifth in the last race of the weekend. In GP2 in 2016, he finished as runner-up in the Feature Race, but retired on the penultimate lap of the Sprint Race with engine troubles. Giovinazzi has appeared in Free Practice 1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix in each of the last two seasons, making an outing with Haas in 2017 and with Sauber last year.
?? Daniil Kvyat
Daniil Kvyat scored his first podium finish at the 2015 Hungarian Grand Prix – but that’s the only time he’s scored in his four visits to the track. Kvyat has a 100% finish record at the Hungaroring. The Russian is yet to beat a team-mate in qualifying at the track and his seventh place on the grid in 2015 is the only time he’s qualified in the top ten here. He’s never been eliminated in Q1 at the circuit.
?? Alexander Albon
Alexander Albon has competed at the Hungaroring in both GP3 and F2. He’s finished in the points in all six of his races here, and won the second GP3 race here in 2016, as well as the 2018 F2 Sprint Race.
?? Robert Kubica
Robert Kubica made his Formula 1 debut at the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix. He raced well and finished seventh, but was disqualified after his car was found to be underweight in post-race scrutineering. He went on to record his best result at the Hungaroring one year later, with fifth place. Eighth place in 2008 is the only other time Kubica has scored at the track. He retired from his final appearance here in 2010. 2009 is the only occasion that Kubica failed to reach Q3 at the track. He was eliminated in Q1 that year, qualifying only nineteenth. His best qualifying result here is fourth, from 2008. It’s one of only two occasions that the Pole has beaten his team-mate in qualifying at the Hungaroring, the other being in 2006.
?? George Russell
George Russell has raced in Hungary in F3, GP3 and F2, but has never had much luck at the Hungaroring. He retired from two of the three F3 races in 2016, finishing fourth in the second race. In GP3 in 2017, he failed to start the first race and finished only eleventh in the second event. Last year in F2, Russell retired from the Feature Race and finished eighth in the Sprint Race.
