Every F1 Driver’s History at the Mexico City Grand Prix

Sainz won from pole in 2024, Hamilton & Verstappen are the only other current drivers to have previously won in Mexico and only four drivers have scored points on every appearance. Here’s everything you need to know about each driver’s history at the Mexico City Grand Prix!

🇳🇱 Max VERSTAPPEN

Max Verstappen has won five of the last seven races in Mexico – including victories in all three seasons from 2021 to 2023. He has a 100% points-scoring record at the track, with a worst finishing position of ninth with Toro Rosso in 2015.

Verstappen has qualified in the top three in all of the last eight races at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and set the fastest time in qualifying at the track in 2019. However, he was demoted to fourth on the grid that year following a penalty for a yellow flag infringement. He took his first real pole position at the track in 2022.

2018 is the only season that Verstappen has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the circuit. He has scored more points here than any other driver.

After driving in Free Practice 1 with AlphaTauri at the 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix, Liam Lawson made his first competitive outing at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in 2024. After qualifying 12th, Lawson finished 16th in a race where he was involved in plenty of midfield battles – most memorably with Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

🇬🇧 Lando NORRIS

Lando Norris had scored 13 points at the Mexico City Grand Prix prior to 2024. He more than doubled that tally in 2024, finishing as runner-up and recording his first top four result at the track.

After finishing tenth in 2021 and ninth in 2022, he recorded his first top five result at the track in 2023 with fifth place – despite starting a lowly 17th. He retired from the race on his first appearance in 2019.

2023 was the first time that Norris did not reach Q3 in his four visits to the track. He returned to Q3 in 2024, qualifying third. It was his best qualifying result at the circuit, having never previously qualified in the top seven. He set the eighth fastest time in Q3 in both 2019 and 2022. 2022 and 2024 are the only years in which Norris has out-qualified his team-mate in Mexico.

Prior to his F1 career, Norris made his first outing at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in 2018, when he took part in Free Practice 1 with McLaren.

🇬🇧 Lewis HAMILTON

Lewis Hamilton won the Mexican Grand Prix for a second time in 2019. He previously won the event in 2016, and finished as runner-up in 2015. After finishing as runner-up again for three consecutive seasons from 2021 to 2023, Hamilton has recorded six podium finishes in total at the track.

Hamilton has a 100% points finishing record at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Aside from his fourth place finish in 2024, the only other occasions that he has not finished on the podium here were in 2017 and 2018, when he finished ninth and fourth respectively. Both of those results secured him World Championship victories.

Hamilton has taken pole position once at the Mexico City Grand Prix, in 2016, with 2015 and 2021 being his only other front row starts. 2023 was the first time Hamilton qualified outside of the top four at the track. Though he qualified fourth in 2019 and 2022, Hamilton started from the top three those two years, making 2023 the first time he did not start within the top three. He qualified sixth for the second year in a row in 2024.

In 2019, Hamilton’s drive from third to the win marked the first time that he finished the Mexico Grand Prix in a better position than where he started it from. Since then, he is yet to lose a position from where he has started at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

🇲🇨 Charles LECLERC

Charles Leclerc has scored on all six of his Mexico City Grand Prix appearances so far. He finished seventh for Sauber in 2018, and bettered that result with a fourth place finish with Ferrari in 2019. He finished fifth in 2021 and sixth in 2022. In 2023, Leclerc recorded his first podium finish at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, coming home in third place. He finished third again in 2024.

Leclerc has reached Q3 on every outing in Mexico. He qualified on the front row in the 2019 race here, before inheriting pole position as the result of a grid penalty for Max Verstappen. He went on to take pole position on pace alone at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix.

2021 marked the first time Leclerc was out-qualified by his team-mate at the circuit. 2023 was the only time he out-qualified Carlos Sainz at the track during their time as Ferrari team-mates. Sainz took pole while Leclerc set the fourth fastest time in Q3 in 2024.

🇬🇧 George RUSSELL

George Russell finished 16th on both of his first appearances in Mexico City. He scored his first points at the circuit in 2022, finishing fourth and brought home more points in 2023 and 2024, with sixth and fifth place finishes.

While he qualified on the back row in 2019, he reached Q2 in 2021 and qualified on the front row in 2022. His front row start was the first time that Russell has started in the top 15 at the Mexico City Grand Prix, having picked up a five place penalty in 2021 following a gearbox change.

Russell reached Q3 for a second time in 2023, qualifying eighth. It was the first time he was out-qualified by his team-mate at this venue. He qualified one position ahead of Lewis Hamilton in 2024, in fifth place.

🇮🇹 Kimi ANTONELLI

Though he has not raced in Mexico before, Kimi Antonelli competed in Free Practice 1 with Mercedes at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. He set the 12th fastest time in the session.

🇪🇸 Fernando ALONSO

From his eight previous Mexican Grand Prix appearances, Fernando Alonso has scored a total of only three points and has reached the end of the race only three times. He finished tenth with McLaren in 2017, before recording a ninth place finish with Alpine in 2021.

Alonso has recorded five retirements at the venue, including in each of the last three seasons. He also retired in 2015 and 2018.

Alonso reached Q3 at the Mexico City Grand Prix for the first time in 2022. It remains his only Q3 appearance at the track. Despite that, 2021 is the only time that Alonso has been out-qualified by his team-mate in his eight appearances at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

🇨🇦 Lance STROLL

Lance Stroll has scored once at the Mexico Grand Prix, with a sixth place finish on his first appearance in 2017. His retirement from the 2023 race brought an end to his 100% finishing record at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Stroll has progressed past Q1 only twice at the circuit, in his maiden season – when he recorded a best qualifying position of 12th – and in 2024. He started from the back in all three seasons from 2021 to 2023, starting at the back of the grid in 2021 and 2022 and from the pit lane in 2023.

2018 is the only time that the Canadian has out-qualified his team-mate at the track. Stroll has gained at least three positions from where he started on all five of his finishes in Mexico so far.

🇫🇷 Pierre GASLY

Pierre Gasly recorded his best result so far at the Mexico Grand Prix in 2021 with a fourth place finish. He holds a 100% finishing record at the track and has scored four times in total from his seven appearances – with tenth place finishes in 2018 and 2024 and ninth in 2019. He finished 11th in both 2022 and 2023.

2019 marked the first time Gasly appeared in Q3 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. He went on to record his best qualifying result at the circuit in 2021 with fifth place. Gasly was eliminated in Q2 in 2018, 2022 and 2023, and was out in Q1 in 2017. He returned to Q3 in 2024.

2021 was the first time Gasly out-qualified his team-mate at this track. He did so for a second time in 2023 and out-qualified Esteban Ocon once more in 2024. Gasly finished where he started in 2023 – marking the first time he did not finish in a better position than where he started. He lost two positions from his grid slot in the 2024 race.

🇫🇷 Esteban OCON

Esteban Ocon has appeared six times previously at the Mexico Grand Prix: in 2016 with Manor, in 2017 and 2018 with Force India and in the last four seasons with Alpine. He has a 100% finishing record at the track but has scored only thee times, with a best result of fifth place back in 2017.His 13th place finish in 2024 was the first time that he failed to score here since 2021, when he also finished 13th.

Ocon reached Q3 at the Mexico City Grand Prix for the second time in 2022. He recorded his best qualifying result at the circuit in 2017 with sixth place. 2016 was the only time that Ocon has been eliminated in Q1 in Mexico until 2023. 🇬🇧 Ollie BEARMAN

Although Ollie Bearman has no past racing experience in Mexico City, he did make an appearance here with Ferrari in Free Practice 1 at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. His session came to an early end when he was involved in a collision with Alex Albon.

🇳🇿 Liam LAWSON

Yuki Tsunoda’s 12th place finish in the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix is the only time he has crossed the finish line from his four appearances to date at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

He was out of the race on Lap 1 on his first appearance in 2021, was the first retirement from the race on Lap 51 in 2022 and was out on the opening lap again in 2024.

Tsunoda reached Q3 in 2021, qualifying ninth – though he moved to 17th on the final grid. He has exited in Q2 on every other appearance, with a best grid position of 11th in 2024.

🇫🇷 Isack HADJAR

While this will be Isack Hadjar’s first time racing at the Mexico City Grand Prix, he did appear at the event in 2022. Hadjar made his F1 weekend debut with AlphaTauri, competing in Free Practice 1.

🇪🇸 Carlos SAINZ

Carlos Sainz won the Mexico City Grand Prix in 2024, leading almost every lap having started from pole position. 2021 was the first time he scored points at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. He has scored in all three races here since then, always finishing in the top six.

Sainz did not finish in the top 12 on any of his first four visits to Mexico and retired from the race in both 2017 and 2018.

From 2015 to 2022, Sainz qualified in a position one better than his previous attempt on every visit to the circuit. That streak ended in 2023, when he recorded his first front row qualification at the track – though his qualifying positions have still improved with each visit, culminating in pole position in 2024.

2015 is the only season in which he has failed to reach Q3 in Mexico, while 2023 is the only time in his last five appearances that Sainz has been out-qualified by a team-mate here. He is yet to gain a position from where he has started at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
