F1 Driver Form: Mexico City Grand Prix

Hamilton & Verstappen are the only current drivers to have previously won in Mexico, Perez scored home podiums in 2021 & 2022 and only four drivers have scored points on every appearance. Here’s everything you need to know about each driver’s history at the Mexico City Grand Prix!

🇳🇱 Max VERSTAPPEN

Max Verstappen has won five of the last six races in Mexico – including victories in all of the last three seasons. He has a 100% points-scoring record at the track, with a worst finishing position of ninth with Toro Rosso in 2015.

Verstappen has qualified in the top three in all of the last seven races at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and set the fastest time in qualifying at the track in 2019. However, he was demoted to fourth on the grid that year following a penalty for a yellow flag infringement. He took his first real pole position at the track in 2022.

2018 is the only season that Verstappen has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the circuit. He has scored more points here than any other driver.

🇲🇽 Sergio PEREZ

In 2021, Sergio Perez became the first Mexican driver to finish on the podium at their home Grand Prix. He followed that up in 2022 with another third place finish.

Perez’s 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix ended in early disappointment with a crash at the first corner that saw him pull into the garage at the end of Lap 1 and retire. It was only the second time, after 2018 when he retired with braking issues, that Perez failed to finish or score points at his home event.

Perez has reached Q3 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez five times. He has a best qualifying result of fourth, recorded in both 2021 and 2022, and has qualified in the top five on all of his last three appearances. 2015 and 2019 are the only times that he has out-qualified his team-mate at the circuit.

Perez has gained at least one position from where he started in all five home races that he has completed.

Hamilton has a 100% points finishing record at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The only occasions that he has not finished on the podium here were in 2017 and 2018, when he finished ninth and fourth respectively. Both of those results secured him World Championship victories.

Hamilton has taken pole once at the Mexico City Grand Prix, in 2016, with 2015 and 2021 being his only other front row starts. 2023 was the first time Hamilton qualified outside of the top four at the track. Though he qualified fourth in 2019 and 2022, Hamilton started from the top three those two years, making 2023 the first time he did not start within the top three.

In 2019, Hamilton’s drive from third to the win marked the first time that he has finished the Mexico Grand Prix in a better position than where he started it from. He gained one position in 2022 and gained four in last year’s race.
