Four Monaco Grand Prix winners are on the 2024 grid, five different drivers have won the past six Monaco races and Leclerc is yet to finish on the podium at his home event. Here’s everything you need to know about each driver’s history at the Monaco Grand Prix!
🇳🇱 Max VERSTAPPEN
Max Verstappen’s Monaco career got off to a very good start as he finished second fastest in Free Practice 1 with Toro Rosso in 2015 on his first laps of the track. Verstappen’s Monaco appearances have been somewhat hit and miss.
His 2015 race here came to an early end after he collided with the rear of Romain Grosjean. He failed to finish again in 2016 in a crash-strewn weekend. He clipped the barrier at Casino in Free Practice 3, crashed out at the Swimming Pool complex in Q1 and crashed out of the race at Massenet. He also missed out on qualifying in 2018 following a crash in the final practice session.
Since then, Verstappen has scored on all six visits to Monaco, finishing on the podium for the first time with his 2021 victory. He finished third in 2022 and recorded a second Monaco Grand Prix win in 2023. He could have finished on the podium in the 2019 race here, if not for a five second time penalty for a pit-lane incident.
Verstappen became a Monaco Grand Prix polestitter for the first time in 2023. He also qualified on the front row in 2021 and became the de facto polesitter that year, when Charles Leclerc was unable to start the race. 2016 and 2018 are the only seasons in which Verstappen has not reached Q3 in Monaco.

🇲🇽 Sergio PEREZ
Sergio Perez became a Monaco Grand Prix winner in 2022, taking victory at the famous street circuit. His win and his fourth place finish in 2021 are the only times Perez has scored at the circuit since taking a podium finish in 2016.
From 12 Monaco appearances, Perez has scored points five times, finished outside of the points five times, recorded two DNFs and failed to start in 2011 after suffering a huge qualifying crash. Despite the crash, Perez had already reached Q3, and since then he has failed to reach Q3 at the circuit three times. He did not set a lap time in 2012, was eliminated in Q1 in 2019 and crashed out in the first part of qualifying in 2023.
In 2022, Perez qualified in the top six at the circuit for the first time, doing so by setting the third fastest Saturday lap time. Prior to 2022, his best grid position at the track was seventh – a position which he has started the Monaco Grand Prix from on four occasions.

Lewis Hamilton has won in Monaco three times, in 2008, 2016 and 2019. He has a 100% finish rate at the track, with 2009 being the only season that he has failed to score. He recorded his worst result since then in 2022, finishing eighth. Hamilton has finished on the podium at the Monaco Grand Prix seven times in total.
Hamilton has taken pole in Monaco twice, in 2015 and 2019, and has started from the front row a further three times. 2009 and 2017 are the only years that he has failed to qualify in the top ten. Sixth in 2023 marked his best Monaco qualifying result since his last pole here in 2019.
In his 16 appearances, Hamilton has been out-qualified by his team-mate more often than not – but 2023 was the first time since 2019 that he managed to do so.

From his four qualifying appearances, Russell exited in Q1 in 2019, was eliminated in Q2 in 2021 and has reached Q3 in each of the last two seasons. His best Saturday result to date at the track is sixth, recorded in 2022. Last year, when he qualified eighth, marked the first time Russel has been out-qualified by a team-mate at the track.
Prior to his F1 career, Russell had a weekend to forget in Monaco in 2018, as he retired from both the F2 Feature and Sprint races.

🇲🇨 Charles LECLERC
Charles Leclerc failed to reach the chequered flag on any of his first three appearances at the Monaco Grand Prix. He was out in the closing stages in 2018 after a brake failure, while he clattered into Nico Hulkenberg in the 2019 running of the race. In 2021, Leclerc took pole for the race before crashing at the end of the qualifying session. He was then unable to start the race due to gearbox issues.
Leclerc finally reached the chequered flag in 2022, but there was more disappointment. He took pole position for the second consecutive season but finished only fourth – a result of poor strategy. In 2023, he qualified third but dropped three places on the grid after picking up a penalty for impeding Lando Norris during Q3. He was unable to finish any higher than where he started, in sixth place.
He had a Saturday to forget in 2019 when he was eliminated in Q1 – his only Q1 exit to date at the circuit. It remains the last time he did not appear in Q3 at his home event.

Sainz has also never missed out on Q3 at the track, and has a best qualifying result of second in 2022. He started from the pit lane in 2015, but still managed to score points. 2021 was the first time that Sainz was out-qualified by his team-mate at the circuit. Alonso has a further three podium finishes to his name here. He recorded podium finishes with Ferrari in 2011 and 2012 and recorded his first top three result at the track in 11 years with Aston Martin in 2023, finishing as runner-up.
The Spaniard has retired from the event four times, while his tenth place in 2008 and 13th in 2021 are the only times he’s finished a Monaco Grand Prix in a position outside of the points. In 2022, his seventh place finish marked the first time Alonso scored points in Monaco since 2016.
Alonso has lined up on the front row here on four occasions, including with pole positions in 2006 and 2007. 2023 marked his first front row start at the track since his last pole position in Monaco in 2007.
2010, when he failed to set a lap in qualifying, and 2021 are the only times he’s been eliminated in Q1 here, while 2015 is the only other time he’s failed to reach Q3 in Monaco.
