F1’s Groundhog Days

There have been 22 occasions in Formula 1 history on which a driver has won the same Grand Prix on the same day twice. We take a look at the drivers who have won the same race twice on the same date!

1st January: Clark, South Africa 1965 & 1968

The South African Grand Prix was held on New Year’s Day twice in the 1960s and both times Jim Clark was the winner. Clark won by 29 seconds at the 1965 South African Grand Prix, taking the season-opening victory in a year where he would go on to win the title for a second time. Clark would again win the South African Grand Prix on New Year’s Day in 1968. This would be the final appearance in his Formula 1 career, as he was killed in a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim before the next round of the championship.

9th March: Coulthard, Australia 1997 & 2003

David Coulthard won the Australian Grand Prix twice in his career, and both times he did so on 9th March. He won from fourth on the grid in 1997 and from eleventh on the grid in 2003 – the latter remaining the record for the furthest back win at Albert Park. These two races marked the Scottish driver’s first and last wins with the McLaren team.

23rd March: Raikkonen, Malaysia 2003 & 2008

Kimi Raikkonen took the first Grand Prix victory of his career at the 2003 Malaysian Grand Prix, held on 23rd March. Raikkonen started from seventh on the grid in this race to claim his first victory with the McLaren team. On the same day five years later, Raikkonen won at the Sepang circuit once again, this time with Ferrari.

25th March: Prost, Brazil, 1984 & 1990

Alain Prost won the Brazilian Grand Prix twice on 25th March, though he did so at two different circuits. Prost won the season-opening 1984 Brazilian Grand Prix held at the Jacarepaguá Circuit in Rio de Janeiro before winning the 1990 Brazilian Grand Prix six years later. The 1990 event marked Formula 1’s return to the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo after a ten year absence.

26th March: Schumacher, Brazil 1995 & 2000

Michael Schumacher took two victories at Interlagos on 26th March during his career. His first was at the 1995 Brazilian Grand Prix with Benetton, and he won the 2000 Brazilian Grand Prix on the same day four years later with Ferrari.

26th May: Hill, Monaco 1963 & 1968

Original “Mr Monaco” Graham Hill recorded five victories at the Monaco Grand Prix during his career. Two of those came on 26th May, with wins in 1963 and 1968. His 1963 victory was his first win in the Principality, while his 1968 win was his penultimate Monaco triumph.

31st May: Senna, Monaco 1987 & 1992

The only man with more wins in Monaco than Graham Hill is Ayrton Senna, who won six Monte Carlo races during his career. Senna won both the 1987 and 1992 Monaco Grands Prix on 31st May. While he won the 1987 event with a 33-second margin to Nelson Piquet, the 1992 race is memorable for Nigel Mansell’s fruitless pursuit of the Brazilian in the closing stages.

10th June: Hamilton, Canada 2007 & 2012

On the same day as Lewis Hamilton took his first victory at the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix, he also won the event again five years later. Hamilton controlled a chaos-filled afternoon in 2007, which saw the Safety Car called out an unprecedented four times, to claim his first win. In 2012, he became the seventh different winner of the season in as many races.

15th June: Schumacher, Canada 1997 & 2003

The Canadian Grand Prix has been won on 15th June twice by Michael Schumacher. He first won in Montreal on this date in 1997, as he won from pole in a race which was shortened due to a crash for Olivier Panis. Schumacher then won the Canadian Grand Prix on the same day six years later. Although his brother Ralf Schumacher started from pole, Michael won from third on the grid.

3rd July: Brabham, France 1960 & 1966

Jack Brabham was the first driver to win the same Grand Prix twice on the same day, doing so at the French Grand Prix on 3rd July. Both races were held at the Reims-Gueux, with Brabham winning from pole in 1960 and taking victory from fourth on the grid in 1966. His win in 1966 was the first time that a driver had won a Grand Prix in a car which they had built.

5th July: Nigel Mansell, France 1987 & 1992

Nigel Mansell won the French Grand Prix twice on 5th July. Both times, the 1992 World Champion started from pole position. His two wins at the event on the same date took place at different circuits. At the 1987 French Grand Prix he was victorious with a seven second margin to Williams team-mate Nelson Piquet. Meanwhile, at the 1992 French Grand Prix, he held a 46 second advantage over Williams team-mate Riccardo Patrese at the end of the race.

6th July: Hamilton, Britain, 2008 & 2014

Lewis Hamilton has taken two home victories on 6th July. He won the British Grand Prix for the first time on a wet day at Silverstone in 2008 and won from sixth on the grid on the same day six years later at the 2014 British Grand Prix. These two victories were Hamilton’s first two victories at home.

12th July: Mansell, Britain, 1987 & 1992

Nigel Mansell won his home Grand Prix twice on 12th July. Both events took place at Silverstone. In the 1987 British Grand Prix, Mansell overtook his team-mate Nelson Piquet in the closing stages for the win, while on the same day in 1992, Mansell led every lap of the race. The 1992 British Grand Prix was Mansell’s final home triumph.

16th July: Brabham, Britain, 1960 & 1966

Jack Brabham was victorious at two British Grands Prix held on 16th July. These two victories both came in title winning seasons for the Australian. While the 1960 British Grand Prix was held at Silverstone, the 1966 British Grand Prix was held at Brands Hatch. Brabham won both of these races having started from pole position.

16th July: Prost, Britain, 1983 & 1989

16th July is the only day on which two different drivers have won the same race twice on the same day. Alain Prost also won two British Grands Prix on this date. Both races were held at Silverstone. In 1983 he won from third on the grid for Renault, while in 1989 he won from second on the grid with McLaren.

18th July: Lauda, Britain 1976 & 1982

The British Grand Prix was won by Niki Lauda twice on 18th July. On both occasions, the event was held at Brands Hatch. Lauda won the 1976 British Grand Prix from pole. This was the race before his near-fatal crash at the Nurburgring at the 1976 British Grand Prix. Six years later, Lauda won once again at the Brands Hatch circuit.

29th July: Hamilton, Hungary 2012 & 2018

Lewis Hamilton has been victorious at the Hungaroring twice on 29th July. In 2012, Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix on this date with McLaren and six years later, he won the 2018 Hungarian Grand Prix with Mercedes. Hamilton started from pole in both races

30th July: Schumacher, Germany 1995 & 2006

Michael Schumacher won his home Grand Prix twice on 30th July, with victories in 1995 and 2006. In both races at Hockenheim, Schumacher won from second on the grid. His 2006 German Grand Prix victory was the last of a record nine victories on home soil.

10th September: Schumacher, Italy 2000 & 2006

Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher won in front of the Tifosi on 10th September twice in his career. Schumacher equalled Ayrton Senna’s tally of 41 wins with victory at the 2000 Italian Grand Prix, and took his 90th and penultimate victory on the same day six years later. Schumacher announced his impending retirement from Formula 1 at the conclusion of the 2006 Italian Grand Prix.

20th September: Ickx, Canada 1969 & 1970

Jacky Ickx is the only driver to have won the same race twice on the same day in consecutive years. He did so at the Canadian Grand Prix in 1969 and 1970, driving for Brabham in 1969 and Ferrari in 1970. The 1969 Canadian Grand Prix was held on a Saturday at Mosport Park, while the 1970 event was held on a Sunday at Circuit Mont-Tremblant.

22nd September: Vettel, Singapore 2013 & 2019

Sebastian Vettel became the latest driver to join the list on 22nd September 2019 at the Singapore Grand Prix. The German had previously won the event at the Marina Bay Street Circuit on the same day in 2013.

29th October: Verstappen, Mexico 2017 & 2023

Max Verstappen became the 14th driver to join the list of drivers who’ve won the same race twice on the same date. Verstappen claimed only the third win of his F1 career on October 29, 2017. Fast forward six years and on the same date – at the same circuit – Verstappen equalled Alain Prost for fourth place in F1’s all-time win list with his 51st career win at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix.
