Lewis Hamilton has the record for the most wins at his national Grand Prix – and equalled the overall record for most wins on home soil in 2024. We take a look at the drivers who have celebrated home success most frequently in Formula 1.
Michael Schumacher, 9 wins in Germany
Michael Schumacher held the outright record as the driver who celebrated winning on home turf more regularly than any other driver until 2024. He won in Germany nine times in his career – though the Grands Prix at which he won had varying titles.
Schumacher’s first two home wins both came in 1995, when he was driving for Benetton. That year, he won the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim and the European Grand Prix at Nurburgring. Schumacher then took another seven wins at home in his Ferrari career, winning three times at Hockenheim and four times at the Nurburgring.
Lewis Hamilton, 9 wins in Britain
In 2019, Lewis Hamilton set a new record for most British Grand Prix wins and the most wins at Silverstone with his sixth victory at his home event. Not even a puncture could stop him from taking a seventh home win at the 2020 British Grand Prix, as he crossed the line with a punctured front left wheel. With the victory, Hamilton set a new record for most national Grand Prix wins.
In 2021, he took his eighth victory at Silverstone, equalling the record for most wins at a single circuit and in 2024, he secured his first victory in almost three years with a record-breaking ninth win at Silverstone – setting a new record for the most victories at a single track and equalling Schumacher as the driver who has won on home soil on the most occasions.
Hamilton first won at Silverstone in 2008 with what is perhaps the finest win of his career. On a wet afternoon, Hamilton produced a masterclass from fourth on the grid and won by over a minute. Since 2014, the 2018, 2022 and 2023 British Grands Prix are three of only four Silverstone races which Hamilton has failed to win. He also failed to win the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, which was held at the circuit in 2020 and was won by Max Verstappen.
Alain Prost, 6 wins in France
Alain Prost was the first driver to reach six wins at his home Grand Prix. Those six victories came with four different teams at three different tracks. His first home win – and the first victory of his career – was at Dijon with Renault in 1981. He then won again with Renault at Circuit Paul Ricard in 1983.
His next two home victories were also at Paul Ricard, this time driving for McLaren in 1988 and 1989. He’d win at the track once more in 1990 during his time at Ferrari. Prost’s final French Grand Prix victory was in 1993 at the Circuit de Nevers Magny Cours, in his last season in the sport with Williams.
Impressively, from his thirteen home race appearances, 1980 and 1984 are the only years in which Prost failed to finish on the podium at the event.
Jim Clark, 5 wins in Britain
Jim Clark won in Britain five times during his career at three different circuits. Of those three, the track closest to his native Scotland is where he took his first home victory. Aintree, located just outside of Liverpool, played host to Clark’s first British Grand Prix win in 1962.
Clark went on to win at Silverstone in his first title-winning year in 1963, before being victorious at Brands Hatch one year later. His final two British Grand Prix wins came at Silverstone in 1965 and 1967. All of Clark’s home victories were taken from pole position.
Nigel Mansell, 5 wins in Britain
Like Clark, Nigel Mansell also won on British soil five times in his career. His first two home wins came at the 1985 European Grand Prix and the 1986 British Grand Prix, both held at Brands Hatch. Mansell’s victory at Brands Hatch in 1985 was the first of his Formula 1 career.
Mansell then went on to win at the British Grand Prix, held at Silverstone, in 1987, 1991 and 1992. His 1987 victory is memorable for his pass on team-mate Nelson Piquet two laps from the end of the race, while 1991 is remembered for Mansell giving rival Ayrton Senna a lift back to the pits at the end of the race.
