Five different teams have won the Italian Grand Prix in the last seven years, while Williams have recorded only one retirement since 2003. Here’s everything you need to know about each team’s history at Monza!
RED BULL
WINS: 4, POLES: 3, PODIUMS: 6 | 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX RESULT: VERSTAPPEN 6th, PEREZ 8th
Red Bull have won four times at the Italian Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen bringing their first Monza victory in nine years in 2022. Until 2023, 2013 was the only time that both Red Bull drivers finished on the podium at the Italian Grand Prix. The team recorded their first 1-2 result at Monza in 2023.
Between 2014 and 2021, the team did not record a single top three finish. Despite their lack of podiums, 2020 and a double DNF in 2012 are the only times since 2008 that Red Bull have left Monza without picking up any points.
The team has recorded three retirements in the last seven Italian Grand Prix weekends: Daniel Ricciardo failed to finish in 2018, while Verstappen was out in 2020 and 2021 – the latter the result of a collision with Lewis Hamilton.
Red Bull have taken two pole positions at the Italian Grand Prix – in 2011 and 2013. They locked-out the front row in 2013. They also started from pole in 2021, as Max Verstappen was promoted to pole position following a grid penalty for Valtteri Bottas.
Verstappen has qualified on the front row at Monza in all of three seasons from 2021 to 2023. Red Bull have qualified on the front row seven times in total, including at the 2017 Italian Grand Prix, where Verstappen started only 13th as a result of a power unit penalty.
David Coulthard and Max Verstappen’s 20th places in 2007 and 2019 respectively mark Red Bull’s worst qualifying position at the track, as well as the only times a Red Bull driver has been eliminated in Q1 here.
The team has had at least one driver in Q3 in all but one of the last 17 seasons, with both Red Bulls eliminated in Q2 in 2015. 2020 was the first time both Red Bull drivers reached Q3 at Monza since 2017, while 2024 was the first Italian Grand Prix for which neither Red Bull driver qualified in the top five since 2019.
MERCEDES
WINS: 7, POLES: 7, PODIUMS: 16 | 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX RESULT: HAMILTON 5th, RUSSELL 7th
Ferrari ended a five-year winning streak for Mercedes at the 2019 Italian Grand Prix, with 2018 remaining the last time that the team won at Monza.
Mercedes won all five Italian Grands Prix between 2014 and 2018, scoring 1-2 finishes in 2014, 2016 and 2017. The team also won on both of their appearances at the Monza circuit during their first stint in the sport, recording a 1-2 finish in 1955.
2020, 2023 and 2024 are the only Italian Grand Prix podiums to not feature a Mercedes driver since 2013. Since their 2010 comeback, Mercedes have finished outside of the points at Monza on only three occasions. All three occasions were retirements, for Nico Rosberg who crashed out on Lap 1 in 2011 and suffered an engine failure in 2015 and for Lewis Hamilton in 2021, who crashed with title rival Max Verstappen.
Mercedes have taken eight poles in total at the Italian Grand Prix, including two in their first two visits to the track in 1954 and 1955. In 2020, the team locked-out the front row for the first time since 2016. They also locked-out the front row in 2014. Valtteri Bottas took pole position in 2021, but was demoted to the back of the grid following a penalty for taking new power unit components.
Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton are the only Mercedes drivers who have failed to qualify in the top ten in the team’s history at the track. Schumacher and Hamilton each qualified in 12th in 2010 and 2013 respectively.
In the last 11 races at the track, Hamilton’s eighth place in 2023 is the only time a Mercedes driver has qualified outside of the top six at Monza.
FERRARI
WINS: 20, POLES: 23, PODIUMS: 72 | 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX RESULT: LECLERC 1st, SAINZ 4th
Charles Leclerc brought Ferrari their 20th Monza victory in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. It was the team’s first victory at their home event since 2019, with Leclerc crossing the finish line first on that day too.
Those are Ferrari’s only wins at Monza in the last 14 years. Leclerc’s 2019 win was the first since Fernando Alonso was victorious in 2010.
In 2020, at Ferrari’s 999th Grand Prix, and there wasn’t much to cheer about. Leclerc crashed out, and Sebastian Vettel also retired with brake failure. It was the team’s first double retirement at Monza since 1995, and the first time they left the track point-less since 2005.
The team has been present at all 74 F1 races held at Monza so far, and have had the most wins at the Monza circuit, with 20 victories in total. Since 2009 there have been only three Monza races which have not featured a Ferrari driver on the podium: 2014, 2020 and 2021.
Aside from their double DNF in 2020, 2014 is the only other occasion a Ferrari driver has failed to reach the end of the Italian Grand Prix in the last 15 years.
Ferrari took pole position at the Italian Grand Prix in both 2018 and 2019, but neither driver reached Q3 in 2020. It was the first time since 1984 that no Ferrari drivers qualified in the top ten at Monza. 1969 is the only other year no Ferraris qualified in the top ten positions.
Charles Leclerc gave Ferrari their 22nd pole at the track in 2022, while Carlos Sainz became Ferrari’s latest Monza polesitter at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix.
The team locked-out the front row for the seventh time at the circuit in 2018, doing so for the first time since 2000. Since the three-stage qualifying system was introduced in 2006, Ferrari have never recorded a Q1 exit at the track, and have failed to reach Q3 on only five occasions – with Kimi Raikkonen in 2008 and 2014, with Ferrari debutant Giancarlo Fisichella in 2009, and with both drivers in 2020.
McLAREN
WINS: 11, POLES: 12, PODIUMS: 31 | 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX RESULT: PIASTRI 2nd, NORRIS 3rd
McLaren took their first Formula 1 victory in almost a decade at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, with Daniel Ricciardo leading Lando Norris home in a 1-2 finish. It was the team’s first 1-2 finish at Monza since 2007. In 2024, Norris and Oscar Piastri secured the team’s first podiums at the track since then, finishing second and third.
Between 2015 and 2019, the team scored only a solitary point at the track – and suffered five retirements. The team’s double DNF in 2017 was their first double retirement at Monza since 2001.
McLaren have won at Monza on 11 occasions. Prior to their 2021 win, Carlos Sainz provided the team with their first podium at the venue since 2012 in 2020, narrowly missing out on the victory.
McLaren have taken 12 pole positions at the Italian Grand Prix and have locked-out the front row on five occasions. In 2024, Lando Norris secured the team’s first pole at Monza since 2012. Oscar Piastri’s second place made it the first time in 12 years that the tea locked-out the front row for the Italian Grand Prix.
The team reached Q3 only twice between 2015 and 2019, but both drivers have qualified in the top nine in each of the last five seasons.
Between 1988 and 2014, there were only two occasions that one of the team’s drivers failed to qualify in the top ten at Monza – both 15th places for Martin Brundle in 1994 and Lewis Hamilton in 2008.
ASTON MARTIN
WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX RESULT: ALONSO 11th, STROLL 19th
The original Aston Martin team made a single appearance at the Italian Grand Prix, in 1959. Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby qualified in 17th and 19th respectively. While Salvadori retired from the race, Shelby finished in tenth place.
Team Silverstone have scored at all but three of the last 14 Italian Grand Prix weekends, finishing with both cars in the top ten in all but four of those races. The team had not recorded a retirement here since 2013, until 2022 when both Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll failed to finish the race.
In 2020, Lance Stroll finished on the podium for Racing Point, which was this team’s first podium result at the circuit since Heinz-Harald Frentzen’s 1999 victory for Jordan. Their only other podium finish here was for Ralf Schumacher in 1998.
1992, 1993, 1995, 2000, 2013 and 2022 are the only years that neither car from Team Silverstone reached the chequered flag at Monza. 2024 marked the first time since 2010 that both of the team’s cars reached the chequered flag at Monza without picking up a point.
For the first time since 2013, neither of the Silverstone-based team’s cars appeared in Q3 at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix. However, Lance Stroll made it the eighth consecutive year in which the team qualified in the top ten after making up places in Sprint Qualifying. Both drivers were out in Q1 in 2022 – the team’s first double Q1 exit at the track since 2007.
Adrian Sutil recorded Force India’s best ever qualifying result here with second on the grid in 2009 – a result which had been recorded by Heinz-Harald Frentzen at Jordan ten years previously.
ALPINE
WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX RESULT: OCON 14th, GASLY 15th
The Enstone team has taken a single victory at the Italian Grand Prix, with Johnny Herbert victorious for Benetton at Monza in 1995. They have recorded a further six podium finishes at the Italian Grand Prix, their most recent being under their Renault guise in 2005, when both drivers finished in the top three.
The team finished with both cars in the points at all three Italian Grands Prix between 2019 and 2021 and recorded a double top five result in 2019. Prior to 2019, 2005 was the last time both drivers finished in the points. Neither Alpine driver has scored points in any of the last three seasons.
Team Enstone have taken two pole positions at Monza – but have not done so since being under their Benetton guise. Teo Fabi took pole on the team’s first appearance as Benetton here in 1986, while Jean Alesi started from pole in 1997.
In the last 12 years, 2019 is the only season in which both drivers have progressed to Q3. It was the first time both of the team’s cars qualified in the top six here since 1986.
Since the knockout system was introduced, 2014, 2016 and 2023 are the only years in which both cars have been eliminated in Q1.
WILLIAMS
WINS: 6, POLES: 7, PODIUMS: 19 | 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX RESULT: ALBON 9th, COLAPINTO 12th
In the last 22 years, Nico Rosberg’s retirement in 2006 is the only time a Williams driver has failed to cross the finish line at the Italian Grand Prix.
Williams have taken six victories at the Italian Grand Prix, their most recent coming at the 2001 event. Since then, they’ve taken three podium finishes here – a second place for Juan Pablo Montoya in 2002, and third place finishes for Felipe Massa in both 2014 and 2015.
2019 marked the first time that Williams failed to score at the circuit since 2013 and neither driver scored in 2020 either. With ninth place in 2021, George Russell recorded Williams’ first points at the Italian Grand Prix since 2018. Nyck de Vries scored more points for the team at Monza – on his only Williams outing – in 2022, while Alex Albon finished seventh in 2023; the team’s best result at the track since 2017. Williams scored for the fourth successive year in 2024, with Albon finishing ninth.
Williams have taken nine poles at the Italian Grand Prix, most recently with Juan Pablo Montoya in 2002. The team lined up on the front row of the grid at Monza for the first time in 13 years in 2017, as Lance Stroll was promoted to second on the grid after qualifying fourth, following grid penalties for his competitors.
While 2019 marked the first time that neither Williams driver reached Q3 at the circuit since 2013, 2020 was the first time that the team set the two slowest qualifying lap times at Monza. It was their third double Q1 exit at the circuit, after 2009 and 2019.
Alex Albon qualified sixth for the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, marking the team’s first Q3 appearance at Monza since 2018. Albon again reached Q3 in 2024 while a late mistake in the opening session saw Franco Colapinto eliminated in Q1 on his F1 debut.

WINS: 2*, POLES: 1*, PODIUMS: 2* | 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX RESULT: RICCIARDO 13th, TSUNODA DNF
The Red Bull junior team have recorded two wins in Formula 1 – and both have been recorded at Monza. Sebastian Vettel took pole and won the Italian Grand Prix for Toro Rosso in 2008, while Pierre Gasly won for AlphaTauri from tenth on the grid in 2020.
Those two wins are two of only seven occasions that a Red Bull junior driver has picked up points at the Italian Grand Prix. Jaime Alguersuari and Daniel Ricciardo each picked up seventh place finishes in 2011 and 2013 respectively, while Sebastien Buemi finished tenth in 2011 and Gasly finished eighth in 2022.
With Daniil Kvyat also finishing tenth when Gasly won in 2020, it marked the first time that the team scored with both cars at the track since 2011, and the first time they had scored at the circuit at all since 2013.
The team have recorded ten non-finishes in total at the track, including seven in the last nine seasons. In 2021, Yuki Tsunoda failed to start the race and Pierre Gasly retired. It was the team’s first double non-finish at the track since 2009. Tsunoda failed to start again in 2023 and failed to finish in 2024.
Other than the year in which Sebastian Vettel took Toro Rosso’s only pole position, 2013 is the only other season in which both of the Red Bull junior team’s drivers qualified in the top ten at the circuit.
Pierre Gasly recorded the team’s first Q3 appearance in five years with ninth on the grid in 2018 and reached Q3 again in 2019, 2020 and 2022. He moved up to fifth on the grid in 2022 as a result of grid penalties for other drivers. 2009 is the only year in which both cars have been eliminated in Q1 at Monza.
SAUBER
WINS: 1, POLES: 2, PODIUMS: 4 | 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX RESULT: BOTTAS 16th, ZHOU 18th
Antonio Giovinazzi’s ninth place in 2019, with Alfa Romeo, is the Sauber team’s best result at Monza in the past nine Italian Grands Prix. Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas are the only other drivers to score for the team at Monza in the past nine years, doing so with tenth place finishes in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
Sauber have taken four podium finishes here – third places with Heinz-Harald Frentzen in 1995 and with Robert Kubica in 2006 and 2008 and a best-ever second place for Sergio Perez in the 2012 race.
The team’s best qualifying result at the track is third, achieved by Nick Heidfeld in 2006 and by Nico Hulkenberg in 2013. Both of Sauber’s drivers were eliminated in the first part of qualifying in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
The team have reached Q3 only twice here in the past nine seasons – one of those occasions was Kimi Raikkonen in 2019, who crashed in Q3 and subsequently started from the pit lane. Antonio Giovinazzi reached Q3 here in 2021 and went on to qualify eighth in Sprint Qualifying – the team’s best Saturday result at Monza since 2013.
Both drivers were out in Q1 in 2024, locking out the back row of the grid with two slowest times in qualifying. It was the team’s first double Q1 exit here since 2018.
HAAS
WINS: 0, POLES: 0, PODIUMS: 0 | 2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX RESULT: MAGNUSSEN 10th, HULKENBERG 17th
With tenth place in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, Kevin Magnussen picked up Haas’ first ever point at Monza. Romain Grosjean finished sixth on the road in the 2018 Italian Grand Prix, but was disqualified from the final result due to a technical infringement with the floor of his car.
Magnussen became the team’s first retiree at Monza in 2019 and retired again in 2020. Nikita Mazepin recorded the team’s third retirement in as many years at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix.
2022 was the first time both Haas drivers were classified in the Italian Grand Prix result since 2017. Both drivers reached the finish line again in 2023, coming home in a lowly 17th and 18th.
Haas have reached the final part of qualifying three times so far at Monza, with Romain Grosjean scoring the team’s best Saturday result with sixth on the grid in 2018. Nico Hulkenberg’s tenth place in qualifying for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix was the team’s first Q3 appearance since then.
2017, 2021 and 2022 mark the only times Haas have failed to progress past Q1 at the circuit, with both cars eliminated in the first part of qualifying. They set the two slowest times in qualifying in 2022.
