RACE BY RACE: FERNANDO ALONSO’S 2022 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2022 Bahrain Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso set a new record for most races between a driver’s first and last appearances with the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix marking 393 races since his debut at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix. Alonso finished the race in ninth place, making 2022 the 18th Formula 1 season in which he has scored. He’s only the fourth driver to have scored in eighteen different seasons. The other drivers to have done so are Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen and Rubens Barrichello.

2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

While team-mate Esteban Ocon finished in the top six at Jeddah Corniche Circuit in both 2021 and 2022, Fernando Alonso is still yet to score a point at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. After finishing thirteenth in 2021, the Spaniard retired from the 2022 race.

2022 Australian Grand Prix

After reaching Q3 at the Australian Grand Prix for the first time since 2014, Fernando Alonso finished last of the classified runners in 17th place. It was the first time the Spaniard finished the Australian Grand Prix but in a position outside of the points since his Formula 1 debut in 2001, when he finished 12th. Completing all but one lap of the race, Alonso became the first driver to race 900 laps at Albert Park.

2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

Qualifying in fifth place, Fernando Alonso equalled his best qualifying result since the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix. In the race, Alonso recorded his first retirement at Imola since the 2001 San Marino Grand Prix.

2022 Miami Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso failed to qualify in the top ten for the first time in 2022. It made the Miami Grand Prix the first race since the 2021 Mexico City Grand Prix that neither Alpine driver has reached Q3. Alonso went on to finish ninth on the road but, after picking up two 5-second time penalties, he finished only 11th. Alonso became the first driver to fail to score from 11th on the grid since the 2021 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

2022 Spanish Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso made his 19th Spanish Grand Prix start, equalling Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have made the most starts at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. On Saturday, Alonso recorded his first Q1 exit since last year’s Mexico City Grand Prix. This was the first time that Alonso was eliminated in Q1 at his home event, as well as his worst Spanish Grand Prix qualifying result since qualifying 18th in 2001. After starting 20th, Alonso finished the Spanish Grand Prix in ninth place . In doing so, the Spaniard equalled Raikkonen as the driver to have scored in the third most F1 races. This was the first time Alonso has scored at his home event since 2018.

Alonso is the first driver to score points from 20th on the grid at Catalunya. However, ninth is not the best result from that position. Christian Fittipaldi (1993) and Eric Bernard (1994) both finished eighth, before the position awarded points.

2022 Monaco Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso recorded his best result of the season so far with seventh place. It was his best result since his podium finish at the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix. He surpassed Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have scored in the third-most Formula 1 races. In the race, Alonso broke Graham Hill’s 55 year-old-record as the driver to have raced the most laps at the Monaco Grand Prix. Alonso is only the sixth driver to hold the record in F1 history. This was the first time Alonso has scored points at the Monaco Grand Prix since 2016.

2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso set a new record for the longest Formula 1 career at the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, eclipsing Michael Schumacher’s former record. Alonso finished seventh in the race, equalling Schumacher for second place in the all-time list of most races in which a driver has scored points.

2022 Canadian Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso qualified on the front row for the first time since he last took pole position at the 2012 German Grand Prix. This was Alonso’s first Q3 appearance in Canada since 2016 as well as his first front row qualification at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve since 2011. It was a disappointing race for the Spaniard, who finished seventh on track before a post-race penalty dropped him to ninth place. Nevertheles, this was the first time he has scored points at the Canadian Grand Prix since finishing sixth in 2014.

2022 British Grand Prix

For the second year in a row, Fernando Alonso qualified in seventh place for the British Grand Prix. Alonso finished in fifth place, recording his best result of the season to date. This was the third top five result of his comeback stint and his best result at Silverstone since finishing third in 2013.

During the race, Alonso overtook Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have raced the furthest distance in Formula 1 history. Alonso becomes only the third driver to have scored 2,000 points in his Formula 1 career. He also becomes only the third driver to have raced 1,000 Grand Prix laps at the Silverstone circuit.

With both Sainz and Alonso picking up points, this was the 300th Grand Prix in which a Spanish driver has scored points.

2022 Austrian Grand Prix

For the third consecutive race, the driver starting from 19th on the grid scored a point. Fernando Alonso finished in tenth, becoming the third driver to score from 19th in Austria. The others to do so are Marc Surer in 1984 and Carlos Sainz in 2019.

Having completed 70 laps of the Austrian Grand Prix, Alonso has now raced 18,619 Grand Prix laps during his F1 career. He’s just three laps away from overtaking Kimi Raikkonen at the top of the all-time list.

2022 French Grand Prix

With sixth place, Fernando Alonso scored for the seventh race in a row. It’s the first time he’s scored at seven consecutive races since the eight races between the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix and the 2018 Spanish Grand Prix. It’s the tenth time in his career that he has scored at seven or more consecutive races.

On the fourth lap of the race, Alonso overtook Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have completed the most Grand Prix laps in Formula 1 history.

2022 Hungarian Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso made his 19th appearance at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2022. That saw him equal Rubens Barrichello and Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have made the most starts at the event.

With sixth place on Saturday, Alonso recorded his best Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying result since qualifying fifth with Ferrari in 2014.

Finishing in eighth place two days after his 41st birthday, Fernando Alonso becomes only the eighth driver since 1970 to score points at the age of 41 or older. He is only the third driver to have done so this millennium, after Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen.

Alonso equalled Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have reached the chequered flag on the most occasions at the Hungarian Grand Prix. This was the 16th time that the Spaniard has finished a race here. Alonso is now just five laps away from equalling Raikkonen’s record of most laps raced at the Hungaroring. Along with Lewis Hamilton, Alonso extended the record for most points-scoring races in Hungary. This was the 15th time that both drivers have scored a point at the Hungaroring. This was Alonso’s 11th consecutive appearance at the Hungarian Grand Prix in which he has picked up points.

Alonso scored points for an eighth consecutive race, making this the first time he has scored at eight races in a row since the eight races between the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix and the 2018 Spanish Grand Prix. It is the ninth time in his career that he has scored at eight or more consecutive races.

2022 Belgian Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso qualified in sixth place, recording his best Belgian Grand Prix qualifying result since 2014. He moved up to third on the grid, equalling his best-ever starting slot at the Belgian Grand Prix. He previously lined up third in both 2004 and 2007.

Alonso finished in fifth place, recording his best Belgian Grand Prix result since his last podium finish here in 2013. Alonso scored points for the ninth race in a row, continuing his longest point-scoring streak since the 15 races between the 2013 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix.

2022 Dutch Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso continued his points-scoring streak, making this the eighth time in his career that the Spaniard has scored at ten or more successive races. This was the 278th time that Alonso has crossed the finish line in his Formula 1 career, equalling Kimi Raikkonen at the top of the list of most Grand Prix finishes in F1 history.

2022 Italian Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso made his 349th race start at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix, equalling Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have started the most races in F1 history. Alonso also equalled Rubens Barrichello’s record of 19 appearances at Monza.

Recording his 191st Q3 appearance, Fernando Alonso equalled Raikkonen for third in the list of most Q3 appearances since the knockout qualifying system was introduced in 2006. This was the first time Alonso has reached Q3 at Monza since the 2014 Italian Grand Prix.

Failing to finish a race the first time since the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Alonso’s 10-race scoring streak came to an end. This was Alonso’s fifth retirement from his last seven Italian Grand Prix appearances.

2022 Singapore Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso made his 350th race start at the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix, overtaking Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have started the most races in F1 history. The weekend started promisingly for Alonso, who equalled his second-best Singapore Grand Prix qualifying result with fifth place; his best qualifying result in Singapore since 2014. He reached Q3 for the 192nd time, overtaking Raikkonen for the third-most Q3 appearances since the qualifying system was introduced in 2006.

Alonso’s 350th race ended in disappointment, as he retired for a second consecutive race. This was his third DNF in his last five Singapore Grand Prix appearances.

2022 Japanese Grand Prix

After recording his best Suzuka qualifying result since 2014, Fernando Alonso finished the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix in seventh place, recording the 279th finish of his career. He sets a new record as the driver to have crossed the finish line on the most occasions in Formula 1. This was the first time Alonso scored points at Suzuka since 2013. Having started and finished seventh, this was the first time in his 16 appearances at Suzuka that Alonso finished in the same position as he started.

Alonso was the only driver other than Verstappen to lead a lap in the Japanese Grand Prix. It was the first time since 2011 that Alonso led a lap at Suzuka.

2022 United States Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso appeared in Q3 at the United States Grand Prix for the first time since 2017. Despite a post race penalty which was later overturned, Alonso finished the race in seventh place. This was the first time since 2016 that Alonso has crossed the finish line at the United States Grand Prix.

2022 Mexico City Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso reached Q3 in Mexico City for the first time in his career. He qualified in ninth place, beating his previous best result of 11th at the circuit, recorded in 2016. Alonso was the second and final retirement from the 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix. This was his third retirement in the last five races and his third retirement in Mexico.

2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso made his 19th appearance at Interlagos, equalling Rubens Barrichello as the driver to have made the most race starts at the circuit. In the race, Alonso crossed the Interlagos finish line for the 17th time, equalling Michael Schumacher as the driver to have reached the end of a race at the circuit on the most occasions.

Alonso came home in fifth place, recording his first top five finish since the Belgian Grand Prix. He made up 12 positions during the race; the most positions he has gained during a Grand Prix since the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix, where he also made up 12 places. This was Alonso’s best Interlagos result since he finished on the final step of the podium at the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix.

2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso made his 149th and final appearance with the Enstone-based team at the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. On Saturday, Alonso failed to reach Q3 for only the fourth time in 2022. He last missed out on Q3 at Zandvoort. Alonso has not reached Q3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix since 2016.

Alonso was the first driver to retire from the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This was his fourth retirement in the last seven races, as well as his first ever retirement at Yas Marina Circuit.
