RACE BY RACE: GEORGE RUSSELL’S 2024 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2024 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

George Russell qualified in the top three at the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix for the first time since qualifying on the front row for the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix. With Russell finishing fifth and Hamilton seventh, Mercedes recorded the same result at the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix as they did in 2023, albeit with their drivers in the opposite order to last year. The team has never failed to score points with both cars on every appearance in Bahrain to date.

2024 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

George Russell’s seventh place in qualifying for the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix marked the first time he qualified outside of the top six since the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix. This was the first race in Saudi Arabia for which neither Mercedes driver qualified in the top six.

2024 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

George Russell qualified seventh for a second consecutive race at the Australian Grand Prix. With Russell seventh and Lewis Hamilton out in Q2, this was the first time since 2011 that neither Mercedes driver qualified in the top six for the Australian Grand Prix – last time they did so, their drivers qualified seventh and eleventh, just as they did in 2024.

Russell crashed out on the final lap of the 2024 Australian Grand Prix, causing this to be the first race in F1 history to finish under Virtual Safety Car conditions. Russell has crashed out of the race on each of the three occasions that Carlos Sainz has taken victory. This was Russell’s second consecutive retirement from the Australian Grand Prix.

2024 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

George Russell finished seventh for a second consecutive year at the Japanese Grand Prix, equalling his best result at Suzuka to date.

2024 CHINESE GRAND PRIX

With George Russell sixth and Hamilton ninth, the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix was the first time since 2011 that neither Mercedes driver finished on the podium in Shanghai, as well as the first time since 2008 that the Brackley-based team failed to record a top five finish at the track.

2024 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

For the first time at the Miami Grand Prix, neither Mercedes driver qualified in the top six. This was, however, the first time that the team recorded a double Q3 appearance at the track. With eighth place, Russell recorded his – and Mercedes’ – worst Miami Grand Prix result to date. The team retained their 100% double points record at the track, however.

2024 EMILIA ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX

George Russell reached Q3 at Imola for the first time in his career, having exited in Q2 on every previous appearance at the track. With Hamilton sixth and Russell seventh, this was Mercedes’ first double points scoring race at Imola since their 1-2 finish in the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

2024 MONACO GRAND PRIX

Setting the fifth fastest time in qualifying for the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, George Russell recorded his first top five qualifying result since the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, for which he qualified third. Finishing fifth in the race, Russell made the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix the 50th Grand Prix in which he has scored a point. This was the third consecutive year in which Russell has finished the Monaco Grand Prix in fifth place. Russell recorded his – and Mercedes’ – first top five finish since the Bahrain Grand Prix.

2024 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

George Russell took pole position for the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, securing the third pole of his Formula 1 career. Russell last took pole at the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, doing so by winning the F1 Sprint. This is the second time Russell has taken pole as the result of a conventional qualifying session – he last did so at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Russell set an identical lap time to Max Verstappen in Q3, with the Mercedes driver taking pole as a result of setting his lap time first. It was the 16th time in total that multiple drivers have set the same lap time for pole position – but only the second time it has happened since Formula 1 started timing laps to thousandths of seconds. The last time it happened, three drivers set identical lap times for pole position at the 1997 European Grand Prix.

On Sunday, Russell recorded his first podium finish at the Canadian Grand Prix. With third place, Russell recorded Mercedes’ first podium finish of the 2024 season. His podium made this the tenth consecutive Canadian Grand Prix in which the team has finished with at least one car in the top three. Having started from pole, Russell fell two places and finished third. It was the worst result for a Canadian Grand Prix polesitter since 2012, when Sebastian Vettel finished fourth.

2024 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

With fourth place at the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix, George Russell finished in the top five for a third consecutive race. It was the first time he recorded three top five results in a row since the 2023 Miami, Monaco and Spanish Grands Prix. Starting where he finished, this was the first time that Russell did not finish in a better position than where he started at the Spanish Grand Prix.

2024 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

George Russell took an unexpected victory in the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix as long-time race leaders Max Verstappen and Lando Norris collided. This was the second victory of Russell’s career – his first since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. This was Russell’s first top three finish at the Red Bull Ring, having recorded a previous best result of fourth place in 2022.

Russell led only eight laps on his way to victory. It was the fewest laps led by a race winner since Max Verstappen led six laps on his way to winning the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. This was the first time that the race winner was not the driver who led the most laps since the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Russell’s win ended a win-less streak for Mercedes of 1 year, 7 months and 17 days – their second longest win-less streak in Formula 1. It was some 55 years short of beating their previous longest win-less streak of 56 years, 7 months and 4 days between victories at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix and the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix.

Russell’s win made this the 15th season in which Formula 1 headed to Silverstone with a British driver having won the previous round. On all but four of those previous occasions, a British driver also won the Silverstone race (as would prove to be the case in 2024).

Russell’s win was the first taken from third on the grid at the Red Bull Ring since the 2014 Austrian Grand Prix.

2024 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

George Russell secured pole position for the 2024 British Grand Prix, with a lap time 0.161 seconds faster than team-mate Lewis Hamilton. This was Russell’s second pole position of the year, having last taken pole at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix. Russell’s pole marked the first time he qualified in the top five for a Formula 1 race at Silverstone.

Russell failed to finish the 2024 British Grand Prix, recording his second DNF of the year – his first since the Australian Grand Prix. This was Russell’s second retirement at Silverstone, with his fifth place finish remaining his only points-scoring appearance from his seven F1 appearances at the track.

Russell made this the second time in 2024 that the polesitter has retired. Max Verstappen did so at the Australian Grand Prix. It’s the first retirement for a polesitter at Silverstone since 2021.

Russell became the first polesitter to lead at the end of Lap 1 at Silverstone since Valtteri Bottas at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020. Having not led any laps in any of the previous 27 races, Russell has now led at least two laps in all of the last four Grands Prix.

2024 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

For the second year in a row, George Russell was eliminated in Q1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. This was the first time Russell failed to qualify in the top ten since last year’s Hungary race, ending a streak of 23 Q3 appearances. This was Russell’s fourth Q1 exit at the Hungarian Grand Prix, seeing him equal Marcus Ericsson and Kevin Magnussen as the driver with the most Q1 eliminations at the Hungaroring. Russell’s 2022 pole position remains the only time he has qualified in the top 11 at the Hungarian Grand Prix from six qualifying attempts.

Russell gained nine places in the race – tying with Sergio Perez for the most places gained on Sunday afternoon. They were the only drivers to gain more than two positions from where they started.

2024 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

George Russell made his 59th start with Mercedes at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, overtaking Michael Schumacher as the driver to have made the fourth most starts with the team.

At the conclusion of the race, George Russell lead team-mate Lewis Hamilton over the line by just over half a second to bring home his third Grand Prix victory and Mercedes’ first 1-2 result since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. However, after the race, Russell was disqualified from the result due to his car being 1.5kg underweight – handing victory to his team-mate. Russell recorded the first disqualification of his career. It marked the second time he failed to score a point in the last three races.

2024 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

With George Russell seventh and Lewis Hamilton eighth, the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix marked the first time in Mercedes’ five Dutch Grand Prix appearances that none of their drivers finished in the top six positions.

2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

George Russell set the third fastest time in Q3 at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, recording his best qualifying result since taking pole position at the British Grand Prix. This was Russell’s best qualifying result to date at Monza. Russell finished seventh for a second consecutive race. He is yet to finish in the top six since his victory at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix.

2024 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

George Russell finished third in the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, becoming one of only seven drivers to record multiple podium finishes in Baku. Russell’s podium saw Mercedes move ahead of Red Bull as the team with the most podium finishes at Baku City Circuit. This was the team’s seventh podium finish in Azerbaijan.

With Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc joining him on the podium, this was the first Formula 1 podium made up entirely of F2 champions – and the third to be made up exclusively of GP2 and F2 champions, after the 2015 and 2024 Belgian Grands Prix.

2024 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

George Russell finished the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix fourth, recording consecutive top four results for the first time since the Spanish and Austrian Grands Prix. This was the first time Russell scored a point in Singapore and only the second time – after his 14th place finish in 2022 – that he crossed the finish line.

2024 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

After crashing out in Q3, George Russell qualified sixth for the 2024 United States Grand Prix. With team-mate Lewis Hamilton out in Q1, this was the first time since 2012 that neither Mercedes driver qualified in the top five for the United States Grand Prix.

Having started from the pit lane, Russell finished sixth. This was the first top six result for a pit lane starter since the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, when Sergio Perez finished fifth. It was the best-ever result for a pit lane starter at COTA.

2024 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

With George Russell finishing one position behind his team-mate in fifth, this was the first time since the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix that both Mercedes drivers finished in the top five. Since F1 returned to Mexico in 2015, there have been only two occasions on which Mercedes have failed to finish on the podium with either car. In both 2018 and 2024, the team finished with their drivers in fourth and fifth.

2024 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

George Russell qualified on the front row for the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, recording his best qualifying result since taking pole position for the 2024 British Grand Prix. He finished fourth in the race, recording a fifth consecutive top five finish.

2024 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

For the fourth time in his career – and the third time this season – George Russell secured pole position at the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Russell became the 58th driver to record as many as four pole positions in his Formula 1 career. Russell is the fourth driver in 2024 to record as many as three pole positions, after Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc. 2006 is the only other season in which four different drivers secured as many as three pole positions each in a single year.

Russell took victory in the race, recording the third victory of his Formula 1 career. Russell’s victory makes 2024 the first Formula 1 season in history in which as many as seven different drivers have won multiple Grands Prix. Russell’s Las Vegas Grand Prix win meant that there had been six different winners in the last six races. It was the first time that there had been a streak of six different winners since the six races between the 2012 Chinese and European Grands Prix.

2024 QATAR GRAND PRIX

As a result of Max Verstappen’s one-place penalty, George Russell inherited pole position. This was his fourth pole position of the season and marked his third consecutive front row start – the longest front row starting streak of his career to date. This was the fifth pole position of Russell’s career, making him the 54th driver to secure as many as five poles in Formula 1. He tied the career tallies of Giuseppe Farina, Chris Amon, Clay Regazzoni, Patrick Tambay and Keke Rosberg.

Having started from pole position, Russell finished fourth. It made the 2024 race the third consecutive Qatar Grand Prix in which Russell finished in a worse position than where he started. He is the only driver to do so in every Qatar Grand Prix to date. This was Russell’s seventh consecutive top six finish.

2024 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

With seventh place in qualifying for the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, George Russell qualified outside of the top six for the first time since the Belgian Grand Prix, ending a streak of three front row qualifications. With Russell seventh and Lewis Hamilton exiting in Q1, this was the first time since 2012 that neither Mercedes driver qualified in the top six at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

On their final lap as Mercedes team-mates, Hamilton overtook Russell for fourth place in the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. As the pair had scored exactly the same number of points during their three seasons as team-mates prior to the Yas Marina race, Hamilton’s overtake meant that he out-scored Russell over their shared three-year tenure at Mercedes.
