2024 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX: WEEKEND MILESTONES

2024 becomes only the third season, after 1982 and 2023, in which Formula 1 has raced in the United States on three occasions in a single year.

Logan Sargeant becomes the first driver to race on home soil three times in a year in two separate seasons.

The 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix is the second Formula 1 race to take place on November 23. The only other race which has taken place on this date is the double points 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME AT THE LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX?

Formula 1 returned to Las Vegas for the first time in over 40 years, where Verstappen recorded Red Bull’s 20th win of the season in the first race on the Las Vegas Strip.

After all the hype surrounding the all-new Las Vegas Grand Prix, Thursday’s first night of action had a false start. Carlos Sainz hit a water valve cover in Free Practice 1 which saw the session cancelled after just eight minutes. An extended Free Practice 2 session was unable to begin until 2:30am, by which time fans had been sent home.

Thankfully, there were no repeats of Thursday issues for the rest of the event weekend. Sainz was handed a 10-place grid penalty, many felt unfairly, as a result of his Thursday misfortune. Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc impressed throughout practice and it was he who took the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix pole. Sainz set the second fastest Q3 lap time but his penalty dropped him to 12th on the grid.

Alex Albon recovered from a crash in Free Practice 3 to line up fifth on the grid with Williams team-mate Logan Sargeant also reaching Q3 and lining up a career-best sixth. There was disappointment for both Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez who exited in Q2, while McLaren recorded a double Q1 elimination.

Verstappen started Saturday night’s Las Vegas Grand Prix alongside Leclerc on the front row. The duo went side by side at Turn 1 and both ran off track. Verstappen was later handed a five second time penalty after being deemed to have forced the Ferrari off track.

Behind the leading duo, there was chaos at the first corner. Fernando Alonso spun in the mid-pack, leading to contact for Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez and further contact between Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton. The VSC was deployed as a result of debris with Perez, Alonso and Bottas pitting at the end of Lap 1. Lance Stroll and Carlos Sainz also made early stops when the Safety Car was deployed as a result of a heavy impact crash for Lando Norris.

When racing finally got properly underway, the new Las Vegas Strip Circuit exceeded expectations for overtaking opportunities. Passes were being made throughout the field – including at the front. On Lap 16, Leclerc had closed in on the back of leader Verstappen. Though the Red Bull driver had already been informed he would be pitting at the end of the lap, Leclerc still made an on-track move on Verstappen stick; a rare sight in 2023.

Verstappen served his penalty at his stop and emerged behind his early-stopping team-mate on track, with Perez now looking like he was in contention for victory. Perez assumed the lead when Leclerc made his pit stop, with former leader Verstappen now behind both drivers. Elsewhere, Hamilton picked up a puncture following contact with Oscar Piastri, while the other Mercedes of George Russell picked up a time penalty for contact with Verstappen.

Another Safety Car was called on Lap 27 to clear debris, under which Perez took the opportunity to make a second pit stop. Most of the drivers near the front of the field followed Perez in, except Leclerc who led when racing resumed on Lap 29.

Three laps later, Perez overtook the Ferrari for the lead – only to be passed by the Ferrari once again three laps later. Verstappen made his way by Perez, who put up little resistance, then setting off in pursuit of Leclerc. The Red Bull took the lead on Lap 37 and would stay there for the rest of the race.

The battle behind Verstappen was far from done, however. A lock-up by the Ferrari allowed Perez past with seven laps to go – but Leclerc remained close throughout the closing stages. In the final sector of the final lap, Leclerc secured second place.

Verstappen ensured Red Bull became the first team in history to take 20 Grand Prix victories in a single season. Impressive drives behind the podium finishers came from Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll, who finished fourth and fifth having started 16th and 19th respectively. Piastri also starred, setting the fastest lap and finishing tenth having started only 18th.
