WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME AT THE LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX?
Mercedes dominated the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, with Russell securing the third win of his career on a weekend where Verstappen won the title for the fourth time in a row.
Mercedes looked quick through practice for the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton was fastest in both Friday sessions, while George Russell was top of the timesheet in Free Practice 3.
While Sergio Perez recorded yet another Q1 exit at Red Bull, Franco Colapinto crashed out at the end of Q2. Given their pace throughout the weekend, it was no surprise to see Russell take pole position – but Hamilton could manage only tenth after making mistakes on both hot laps in Q3. Pierre Gasly impressed in qualifying, putting his Alpine third on the grid.
Carlos Sainz started alongside Russell on the front row but could not get ahead of the Mercedes at the start. Charles Leclerc made up two places from fourth on the grid to take second through the opening corners.
Further back, the championship was on the line for Max Verstappen who needed only to finish ahead of Lando Norris to be crowned World Champion. Verstappen had made his way to fourth by the end of lap four, while Leclerc challenged Russell futilely for the lead. On Lap 7, Sainz was back ahead of his Ferrari team-mate and one lap later, he was overtaken by Verstappen.
Verstappen continued his climb through the field, passing Sainz for second on Lap 10. Six laps later, a smoking engine for Gasly saw his hard work in qualifying amount to nothing as he became the first retirement of the race.
Ferrari ordered Sainz to let Leclerc by on Lap 28 as the Monegasque driver came under pressure from Hamilton, who was making his way through the field having started tenth. Sainz was unhappy with Ferrari’s strategy calls, pitting one lap later than he wanted to. Hamilton overtook Verstappen for third on Lap 32, which would become second after Leclerc made his pit stop.
Perez made his way past both Liam Lawson and Kevin Magnussen in one corner in what was perhaps the highlight of an otherwise mediocre – at best – season for the Mexican. He eventually finished tenth.
On the other side of the Red Bull garage, Verstappen was no match for the Ferraris, falling back to fifth in the closing stages. Nevertheless, with Norris finishing sixth, the Dutchman did all he needed to do to be crowned World Champion for the fourth year in succession.
Russell led home Mercedes’ first 1-2 in two years, with Hamilton voted Driver Of The Day following his comeback drive. Sainz completed the top three.
